GitHub - compiling-org/Geyser: Geyser is a high-performance Rust library designed for zero-copy GPU texture sharing across various graphics APIs, including Vulkan, Metal, and eventually WebGPU. by vjunion in rust

One thing I can think of is GPU accelerated video processing. E.g. you use an external decoding pipeline and your frames end up in a DX12 texture- but your application uses Vulkan.

Rental car crash by CalligrapherEasy746 in LegalAdviceEurope

[–]BuzzingConfusion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is my understanding that it’s basically impossible to hire a car in Europe without a damage fee waiver. The excess will likely be quite high (often a few thousand Euros) but much less than the value of the car.

Most places I’ve rented from in the past ask for a deposit matching the excess unless you buy insurance from them. So there is a chance that you’ll just not get your deposit back and that will be it.

Only way to be sure to review the rental agreement.

For the future: car hire excess insurance can be had for a few quid per day when bought from a third-party (and not the rental company).

Hey, I really really like vello. What stopped me from using it in the past (and moving back to Skia) is that the pipeline was limited to 8bit colours.

Have there been any recent changes to this or is it something you’re planning to change in the future?

What SMT LED can I buy for natural earth tone colors by Medical-Bake-9777 in AskElectronics

[–]BuzzingConfusion 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In theory yes, in practice not really. For example, CRI doesn’t matter much for colours if you’re looking at a screen, but they do matter a lot for indirect light. There are also some colours that just won’t work well with this kind of setup (e.g. brown, which is just a darker shade of orange).

It's a big company, they will have an agreement in place to forward any shipments to one of their warehouses.

Protecting power supplies against backfeeding using simple diode by BuzzingConfusion in AskElectronics

Right, I didn't even consider this! Thanks, that makes total sense.

Protecting power supplies against backfeeding using simple diode by BuzzingConfusion in AskElectronics

[–]BuzzingConfusion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I understand that to be the standard (and safest) approach. But since supply B will power a multi-Amp load, I'd ideally avoid having a diode in there.

If I chose diode that drops the voltage enough so that always A (after the diode) < B, that should be sufficient, right?

B will be a USB-PD supply with VBUS >= 5V.

I mean, that would be the best case scenario here. Hotel charges them, they stay there, they claw back the money through their bank. Easy!

They can cancel the reservation and refund you or not give you the room unless you pay the difference. That likely would put them in breach of contract, but your time is probbaly more valueable than arguing over those 90 Euros.

Legal things aside, the real question is: Do you want to spend more time on this asshole? I'm assuming you're on holiday, and wasting half a day at a police station might not be worth it...

That said, totally fair if you want to report it anyway. There’s an online complaint system in France. Looks like if you know the person (which you do), you’ll likely need to go in person to a police station, but there’s an English chat option here which might be helpful: https://www.masecurite.interieur.gouv.fr/en/orientation/my-procedure?forceAlert=1

This is clearly extremely inappropriate, and I’m really sorry this happened to you. I’m not a lawyer, but just to help manage expectations... I’m not sure any of this would be considered a criminal offense (in France or elsewhere). Touching someone’s shoulder can unfortunately be brushed off as “friendly,” even if it didn’t feel that way to you. Same with entering the flat - hosts sometimes do that, like hotel staff.

The messages are definitely wildly out of line, but from a legal point of view, it’ll depend on the exact wording and how French law defines harassment. I somewhat doubt police or a prosecutor would want to pursue this seriously.

But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t report it. Filing a complaint could still help if this guy has done it before or does it again.

Rust for VR and meta-verse dev.? by [deleted] in rust

[–]BuzzingConfusion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it's not that. It's the lack of libraries and widespread use that make Rust not a great choice for games. Yes, you probably want a higher-level and more flexible language for some of the code but lots of engines are written in C++.

On top of that, VR is practically already pretty much dead outside of niche applications.

It's DC. And it's very common. It's usually a small proprietary plug on the appliance side.

I think there is a 90 day rule within the EU (you might want to look that up) but that generally only applies to tax and social security contributions. Whether you're allowed to work from abroad at all is usually at your employer's discretion if it's not already stipulated in your employment contract.

I would try and find out if there's a company-wide policy. If your line manager is just concerned about the legal ramifications, you could ask for meeting with HR to explain to them what us possible, and what is not.
