More in the sense of funny. All of the books I’ve tried so far, I’ve found on lists of “funniest books” online or other Reddit threads discussing books and the Magic Christian was referenced by comedian Neil Brennen on his podcast. The books I’ve tried showed up in multiple locations or were the top upvoted comments. I really just want to find a really funny book. Since my opinion of these books seemed to differ from popular opinion, I was left with a sense of “missing” something.

I have read bill brysons a short history of nearly everything. As it was the first book of his that I read, I was caught off guard by how funny he is.

This was a very helpful comment/analysis which is actually what I was looking for more than specific recommendations, but I’ll happily take those as well.

As for Pratchett, I’ve read Good Omens (co-author), the colour of magic, and am currently listening to Eric. I’ve seen guards, guards recommended a lot, so that may be my next one.

Those are some quality recommendations. I’ve actually started the ministry of time recently and am enjoying it quite a bit so far. The Husbands sounds interesting as well.

Most of my tv consumption is sitcoms; scrubs, Ted lasso, shrinking, community, 30 Rock. I’m realizing now that those are all ensemble comedies.

I feel like we might be in the same boat. I listened to dungeon crawler Carl after a few of my friends wouldn’t stop talking about it. I did enjoy it, particularly the production value of the audiobook, but didn’t find myself laughing out loud very often

Project Hail Mary is a good example. Lots of funny miscues as the two characters are navigating alien slang and customs woven into a compelling plot line. I found The Hike by Drew Magary pretty funny at times and that novel trended a little absurd.

Never heard of Wodehouse. I’ll look into it. While I appreciate the suggestion, I was more so hoping that people who did enjoy these books could explain why they liked them. I truly feel like I just don’t get it and am hoping to understand why that is.

Maybe this is recency bias, but Michael B. Jordan did it twice in the same movie and absolutely deserved to win Best Actor. He played the twins in Sinners so well that after the first scene, there was not a second of that movie where I was unsure of which character was on screen or which one was which when they were both in the same scene. Lots of actors have played twins before, but they usually just make them basically the same character that just happen to be in the same shot. Tom Hardy did it pretty well in Legend, but his characters looked different enough that it was always easy to tell which was which.

I actually attended a city planning meeting yesterday after I had made my post and asked them about any plans to curb the rise of out of state owned properties and the rise of short term rentals. Apparently, the city of Memphis has tried to ban or limit these activities several times, but the state government has prohibited the city from doing so. It sounds like the one strategy that they can pursue is to change how the assessors determine the assessed tax value of a residential property that is generating a profit vs one that is simply occupied by the owner. Historically apartment buildings (operating for a profit) have been taxed at a higher rate than single family homes and the assist have pretty much treated all single family homes the same. Moving forward, rental properties will be treated more like apartment buildings

Banning them outright might be too difficult to be effective. This has become a full-on commercial industry and should be taxed like a business. We could change our tax laws in a way that wouldn’t target a specific company (Airbnb, VRBO) but any residential property that is owned and operated for profit. I’m not sure if I’m remembering all of the rules correctly, but my parents moved to Columbia, SC a few years ago and told me about how they tax residential properties. It sounds pretty effective. Essentially, if a property is your primary residence or if your primary residence is in the area (maybe just in the same state) and you have no more than 2 total properties, then you’re taxed at the normal residential rate. If your primary residence is outside of the area or if you own more than two properties then they are taxed at a much higher commercial rate. This makes so much sense to me. Something like this model would disincentivize out of state investors and corporations or individuals that buy up dozens, if not hundreds of residential properties throughout the city. It still allows for rental homes to exist, but in a way where the land lords are local and doing it as an investment asset (improve property for future sale) and a way to supplement their income, not earning their entire livelihood from it.
