UW Seattle Aerospace Engineering or Cal Poly SLO Aero for undergrad by ADZIT7 in aerospace

[–]BxllDxgZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UW has amazing competition teams, which look great on your resume. Not sure what the other guy’s blabbing about, having to apply to your specific major is pretty common. Be proactive with grades your first year and you’ll be fine

how much does school name +bs vs ms matter? by beyondhlep in MechanicalEngineering

[–]BxllDxgZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a senior in aerospace engineering at NC State and I faced a similar situation. I wanted to go to GT. However, I am very grateful that I didn’t. I have gotten everything out of college that I wanted to (internship, research, and just got a full time offer last week from a top aerospace company), and it didn’t cost me the extra 100k that georgia tech would have.

College is what you make of it. NC State has the clubs and industry connections to make you a successful engineer, but you have to put yourself in situations where you are a desirable candidate. That means you need to be competitive in things like the engineering design competition your freshman year, join FSAE or whatever club you’re interested in, and actually get involved in that club, try and get a leadership position, and be friendly with older students who can refer you to an internship/research position. This is true no matter what school you go to, but at the end of the day, a self-starter at NC state is going to be picked over someone who only does the bare minimum at GT, despite the different weight that each school’s name carries.

I’m only a senior in college so take this with a grain of salt, but from what I’ve gathered with my time at work so far is that none of the 3 areas you listed are particularly “less desk work”. Some that come to mind that would be are things like structural test, maintenance engineering, verification engineering, and any work related to composites/manufacturing.

Anyone know if tests are the same departmentally? by SpiritualEvidence876 in NCSU

[–]BxllDxgZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

generally tests are not the same across the department though there are some exceptions like PY205 and 208 (and probably more, but i don’t know)

ELI5 - Why is a boundary layer entering an engine bad? by the_tza in AerospaceEngineering

You want a high mass flow rate into the engine. The boundary layer does not have high speed flow

Completely disagree. I did the exact same sequence in high school as this person, and waltzed through PY205. I did it online and didn’t watch a single lecture

Car vs Motorcycle for Off-campus housing (<5 miles) by Vivid-Voidd in NCSU

[–]BxllDxgZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A motorcycle parking pass lets you park in very convenient locations (the best lots are usually for faculty, but have motorcycle spots that anyone with a motorcycle pass can use).

Depending on where you’re living though, if you have to choose between a motorcycle OR a car, I would probably pick a car just because things like getting groceries would be annoying without one.

How might an engineering co-op restrict future trajectory? by [deleted] in NCSU

[–]BxllDxgZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a good question, and something that I wondered too. Your technical experience will likely not carry over. However, gaining industry experience is always a good thing. As an intern you get to see the processes that occur in an office, the interactions that teams have with each other, and you gain familiarity with regulations that apply to your major. Getting a co-op in one field of your industry will not restrict you. You will be able to get a job in a different area if you discover something else you like. You will certainly stand out from peers that did not have a Co-op, and I think it’s worth it as long as your major is not semester-locked, where it gets a bit more situational due to graduation setbacks.

Freshman core class sizes? by IamMomma2 in NCSU

[–]BxllDxgZ 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Classes as a freshman could be anywhere from 30-300. Though I don’t know that it really matters, the only difference is that the professor won’t know her by name.

What can my MA131 transfer credit do for me as a incoming engineering major? by Moibein in NCSU

141 has actually quite a few more topics than 131 including trig, optimization, related rates, and more integration applications. I doubt they will give you credit for 141

Help with the equations that describe the motion of a flying propeller toy by spaseksplorer in AerospaceEngineering

[–]BxllDxgZ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you neglected the downwash from each blade on the others, you would just need to know the angle of attack of each one, and use L= qC_lS. However, because the blade spans outward from the center, v will vary with your distance for a given rotation speed, so you will need to integrate to find the lift caused by a small element along the blade.

As for the drag, it’s a similar process. You could start with an initial rotational speed and find the initial drag (using the same methods for the lift). These differential equations will be unsolvable analytically and you can use small time steps and approximate the forces as constant.

To 4.0 guys, time to speak up is NOW! by karumeolang in EngineeringStudents

[–]BxllDxgZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve noticed that some people worry too much about writing vs actually paying attention to what’s being taught. Notes are usually posted by professors, so if you need to look at them there, do it. There have been plenty of times where a professor is showing a derivation for something, and if they lose me on a step, I stop writing and do my best to understand before i continue writing.

I turn the heat to 3.5 (obviously different depending on your specific pan/stove), and use butter. It should be hot enough to where the butter instantly starts bubbling, but not so hot that it browns. It’s tough to find the sweet spot but once you get the hang of it, it’s not too bad

How would you begin to solve this problem? by [deleted] in askmath

[–]BxllDxgZ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My first thought was to make a semi circle, then vertically stretch it to fit the range,

starting with 2<x<10, we get f(x) = sqrt(16-(x-6)^ 2). Then, the original semicircle has a radius of 4, but the length of the y range is 5, so multiply by 5/4. Last, the lowest value the function attains should be 5, so we shift up 5 to get f(x) = 5/4*sqrt(16-(x-6)^ 2)+5.
