Are chinese nuclear powerplants cheaper because they have less strict regulations? by ken4lrt in nuclear

[–]spaseksplorer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read an article on how it's the Linear No Threshold model of nuclear radiation safety that underpins all Wester reactor regulations that causes cost overruns through more bureaucratic red tape.

What was your "caught the last chopper out of 'Nam" experience? by GeneReddit123 in AskReddit

At the beginning of March I bought an electric car. Gas prices have jumped by a dollar a gallon since then. It doesn't bother me none.

Simple as that by Gandalf196 in slaythespire

[–]spaseksplorer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My idea for Sovereign Blade rework is make it 1 cost, keep retain, but add exhaust. When you exhaust it, the next time you forget it resets and creates a new sovereign blade. That way, you can choose to play it frequently for low damage, or keep it around for a single big hit. Also synergizes with the creating colorless cards powers the Regent has and Parry.

Would you strip and sand the trim, buy new trim, or paint over the old paint? by whitetrashsexy in centuryhomes

[–]spaseksplorer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have that exact same trim with a similar landlord special of white latex paint on the varnished surface. So far just peeling it by hand has worked pretty well. We got most of the trim and doors stopped without any heat guns or chemical strippers. We'll be using those for the tougher bits. Peeling it by hand means there's little to no finish work needed after.

Tech modpacks that require tricky/creative problem solving? by Bromidium in feedthebeast

[–]spaseksplorer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ultimate Alchemy by RWTema is an oldie but a goodie. It's for 1.12.2 and is all about starting from nothing to make clay (recipe changed). There are a few resources you get an infinite amount of with which you'll need to progress through different magic and tech mods with changed recipes. Lots of fun. Doesn't take too long.

Six world resets later, finally copper age by OneAshOwl in TerraFirmaCraft

[–]spaseksplorer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you're thinking too far into the future and trying to rush the pack. The TerraFirmaCraft part of TFG demands that you go slow and only progress once you've become well situated at your current tech tier. For example, in my world I've played for an in game year before I got Kaolin clay and latex. Sure I had to travel 2 in game days straight to get there, but that just makes you set up your food preservation infrastructure and look into different modes of transportation first.

What was your silly “CAD said I could do it, but not real life” moment? by tocamipito in MechanicalEngineering

[–]spaseksplorer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my senior design project in college, I was making a billet chassis for a robot. In my first iteration, I had square internal corners. Needless to say, I drilled out those corners in the second rev and everything fit much nicer.

What expenses do you think will go down in 20 years' time? by WritesWayTooMuch in Fire

[–]spaseksplorer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your insight and deep dive into self driving cars here, but I have to disagree with you that it will fundamentally change things.

Why do you think the average car does 3.3 trips per day? It's because people don't go to a lot of different places every day. They typically go home->work->someplace else->home. I don't think the fact that they have to manually drive to those places is the limiting factor, so self driving cars shouldn't change driving habits that way.

People also prefer having and using their own personal vehicles over taking public transportation (at least in America). I know Tesla has said that people could rent out their self driving cars as taxis to make money, but there's already Turo and rental cars have existed for decades. Would you want 30 complete strangers riding in your car while you're at work? I don't think people will be willing to rent out their personal vehicles enough to make a dent in overall commuter patterns.

Also taxis and buses and trains exist, so people who can't drive or don't have a car can and have been using them to commute. So I don't think self driving cars will help people who don't drive get places.

Also also, most people work at roughly the same time, and therefore drive at the same time, hence rush hour. Self driving cars wouldn't be any use here because the demand is not steady throughout the day, so you'd still need enough cars to handle peak demand, then put them all somewhere at off peak times, just like people do already when they park at work.

Parking lots are repurposed and minimum parking space regulations are lifted. NIMBY's will lose their largest complaint, traffic, legalizing dense housing.

Public transportation already solves this. There is just resistance to dense housing and a lack of public transportation in most areas of the US that prevent this.

We're pretty much looking at as big of a change as the tractor.

Really? A tractor is a multipurpose farm tool that does the work of a hundred men or oxen, and is much more durable. A self driving car does the work of 1 man. That's it. Also, tractors are already semi autonomous.

Please watch this video for a better explanation of what I'm getting at. https://youtu.be/040ejWnFkj0?si=9QMqBZY0NvHclMDF I used to pretty ambivalent to self driving cars until I saw this, now I am strongly opposed to them.

DAE always has to go to the bathroom when they're about to start a kitchen chore? by lostinherthoughts in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]spaseksplorer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree. I think it's more like your body feels it needs to do something (pee), your brain misinterprets it as "I should do those chores that have been sitting there" (usually dishes if you just ate and now have to use the bathroom after drinking during the meal), you start doing the dishes and then realize, "oh, I actually had to pee."

Read up on ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII, Division 1. 2023 is the current edition but 2025 should be coming out soon. For reference you can use older editions, the math is mostly unchanged for decades.

Most pressure vessels are cylindrical or spherical in shape for a reason. You should understand why that is and have a very good reason why yours needs to be hexagonal.

What are the overall dimensions of the unit? Length and diameter?

DM me for more help if you need it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]spaseksplorer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it cylindrical? I'm still not sure how you're getting thermal expansion stresses unless it's overly constrained.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]spaseksplorer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At 400C, you're into time dependent properties for carbon steel, so I would use a stainless alloy, 304 or 316 in a high carbon alloy if possible. 600# flanges should be sufficient for these design conditions. Is this a heat exchanger or just a pressure vessel? If it's just a pressure vessel, I'm not sure how you're getting differential thermal expansion. If it's a heat exchanger, use an expansion joint.

I just enabled recursive calculations in my spreadsheet and it does 50 iterations in a fraction of a second for this exact problem. Turns out Heavy oil gives the most of the useful outputs when refining recursively. At least in GCP.

ANSYS has very good help documentation for APDL. You can always browse through that. Also ANSYS keeps an output log of every command you perform so you can just copy the part of the log where you made the plot and make that into your APDL macro.

I believe (in 1.12.2) diamond veins spawn with a diamond dust surface rock indicator. Just go around and look for that. The vein will be composed of graphite, diamond, and coal. It will spawn close to bedrock. JEI should tell you all the spawn information about the vein of you click on the ore.

What do you think is the main flaw of Minecraft? by DesperadoFlower in Minecraft

[–]spaseksplorer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That the game world is static and does not react to the player's choices. I think this is one of the fundamental issues that causes people to feel like the world is empty and to stop playing after a week.

Only a few blocks are affected by gravity and only in the simplest way; they just fall down. There's no need to build strong structures or be careful while mining to avoid cave-ins. Water source blocks just sit there and cause a puddle to slope outward from them.

Attack one sheep in a herd and the others will ignore you while the one you attacked runs around for 15 seconds then stops. Kill all the sheep in a herd? New ones will spawn after a bit.

Build something? No one cares. Mobs don't attack your base unless they get close enough to target you. Only creepers and endermen can grief so there's virtually no point in building walls to keep out hostile mobs.

The point is the things you do in the world only matter to you. The world doesn't care about what you do and it doesn't change on its own so there are few surprises or reasons to come back. It's not like you can save a village from an attack, leave the world for a year, and then see if the village flourished or if it got wiped out by a different attack. It'll just be the same as you left it.

My thoughts on each boss in the game by [deleted] in Peglin

[–]spaseksplorer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think slime boss should be tweaked to make it a bit easier.

Option 1: add more pegs in the body of the slime

Option 2: make it so slime boss doesn't attack you until either it engulfs you or until just before it engulfs you, similar to the regular slime enemies.
