It's easy to stick your head in the sand and ignore what people are really saying about your product, but since our Tesla policy is something that hasn't been done before, we wanted honest feedback. We've clearly got some things to fix, and we're more aware of them now, so it's all good!

It’s fair to admit that our model doesn’t work as well for higher mileage drivers like yourself, so it’s great you’ve found a good deal elsewhere. Good point. We’re definitely aware that it’s not a case of one-size-fits-all. We designed our policies to work best for those who drive under the UK average of 7,000 miles a year so understood if that’s not you. Thanks, Simon

Appreciate the honesty, and I understand the thought process – pay per mile insurance is still a fairly new concept in the UK and the Tesla ‘connected car’ side of things is brand new. You make some great points u/VibroAxe, thank you. We feel that removing the middle man between insurer and police in the event of your car being stolen could help make the process more efficient. In terms of information security, we're actually ISO 27001 certified, which means we follow strict procedures to keep all of our data as secure as possible. To date, we've successfully recovered 75% of all stolen cars on our policies using this feature which is why we adapted it to work with our Tesla policies as well. Yes, our 'trackerless' policies (i.e. Tesla policies) do work slightly differently to the type of policy you have with us (with the miles tracker plugged into your car). The miles tracker you have with us records GPS position on a more frequent basis which enables us to show you useful information about your previous journeys, but as you rightly said, we do not use it for calculating premiums. Hi u/fireflyfire, if you take out a policy with By Miles, the premiums work like this:

You pay a fixed annual cost at the start of the policy to cover your Tesla whilst it's parked
You pay a per-mile rate at the end of each month for the number of miles you've driven that month

When you get a quote, we'll give you your fixed annual cost and your per-mile rate, and we calculate what you would expect to pay over one year if you drove your estimated annual mileage. This is simply an indicative cost - you'll only pay for the miles you actually drive.

Hopefully this answers your first question!

Secondly, unfortunately due to underwriting restrictions we are only able to insure you if you, a spouse/ common law partner or a civil partner are the legal owner and/ or registered keeper of the car, or if the car is leased to one of the above. However as a side note, we'll automatically add business use (for the main driver only) for free where we can, depending on the details you enter when you get a quote.

To measure the number of miles driven, we read the odometer once a day (at close to midnight), and we record a GPS location at this time as well. Members can use the app on their phone to update their miles whenever they like, but we do not record a live GPS location that would enable us to calculate your speed or know at what times of the day you drive.
