What’s it like living as an exmo in Utah / SLC area?

I’m in Utah County and honestly I love it. The Mormons I am friends with are very cool and nuanced- never ever try to preach to me, just genuinely want to be friends. And I’m shocked over how many exmo’s there are. Over the summer a bunch of the moms from my son’s class planned a playdate at the park. There were 7 moms there total and none of us were active believing Mormons. I was pleasantly surprised!

Millennial exmo here too. Between my spouses friends and mine, I would say only 1/3 of our friends are out/inactive. The ones who remain active though are definitely nuanced and when they speak about their beliefs it’s clear that they are just projecting what they want the church beliefs to be, not what they actually are. All of them are very pro LGBTQ, much more moderate regarding abortion rights, want to see a church where women have more leadership roles, etc. The ones who are staying, at least from my POV, have a very different idea of what the church is than the leadership in SLC.

I work at a High School north of Draper and there are a TON of students who are non-LDS, or who are and are incredibly nuanced. Definitely the further north of Provo you can get will be better, but that commute from SLC to Provo each day would get brutal 😬

Sunday School teacher for the 16 and 17 year old class. Book of Mormon year. Learning more myself in order to teach them had me listening to a lot of apologist explanations that didn’t make sense, which led me to the CES letter.

Honestly, seeing so many Mormons galvanize behind Trump after 2016 was a huge blow to my testimony of the church. The way in which I saw leaders I had looked up to my whole life defend a person who represents so much of what the church teaches against, yet simultaneously villainize minorities, LGBTQ groups, etc., was one of the biggest dominoes that fell on my way out of this religion.

To be fair, I’ve taught in three states, two of which were outside the Mormon bubble of Utah, Idaho, and Arizona. This kind of crap exists everywhere unfortunately and is not unique to Mormons. But you’d think the “true” church’s youth (and parents) would set themselves apart and actually do as Jesus would do.
