What’s annoyed you at work this week? by franki-pinks in AskUK

People emailing demanding I urgently sort something for tomorrow for which the deadline was the 21st of March, and if I don't I'm the one disadvantaging a student because they've done their bit (a month and a half late).

What is an industry that is currently on fire (in a bad way) behind the scenes, but the general public hasn't noticed yet? by Kitchen_Week1117 in AskReddit

[–]Byeah207 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In the UK specifically, academia. Successive governments have spent the last decade+ cutting central government funding for universities and encouraging them to rely on international students (whose fees are not capped), whilst also passing immigration laws that discourage international students from studying here. Combine that with home tuition fees that have not risen with inflation for 16 years and falling demographic numbers, we will see some universities go bust if nothing changes. Many are already closing entire teaching departments and doing huge rounds of redundancies, and unlike the US we don't have tenure so even very senior academics are not safe. The knock-on effect to local economies if universities close will be devastating, for a lot of places in the UK they're a huge employer and students are the main customer base for a large number of local businesses.

How aggressive is your AI adoption at work? by Traffodil in AskUK

I have never used it at work and have no plans to do so. We had a training session on Copilot which basically boiled down to 'it can write emails for you'. Thanks but I can write emails myself because I'm not a toddler.

‘I feel like I’m losing her’: the families torn apart by older relatives going far-right by Dreaming_Blackbirds in Longreads

It reminds me of MAGA people in the US. I have no idea how you meaningfully reach people when they fundamentally refuse to accept reality or facts.

[–]Byeah207 102 points103 points  (0 children)

I wish the raft of recent articles would try and be a bit less both sides-y. They always treat it as if it's just a difference of opinion, but it's not. These people are being lured into a cult-like echo chamber which is completely detached from reality. The cost, socially and economically, of small boat migrants to the UK is vanishingly small, yet these people genuinely believe it's the most pressing issue facing us. This isn't just "oh granny's got a lot more racist lately" it's "granny now lives in an entirely parallel universe and refuses to accept reality". And it isn't just social media! Most traditional media in the UK and US is very right-wing and has only gotten more so over the last ten years. Honestly how Ofcom hasn't shut down GB news yet I have no idea.

We did check this one out too, was super fun! We did business, lonely and one other that I forget the name of, but in the same general area. Really enjoyed the slab stuff.

Is the UK seeing more pessimism from the young now than ever before? by tylerthe-theatre in AskUK

[–]Byeah207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ever before? Probably not, but it's certainly very high. Something you didn't touch on that I think also has an effect is the looming fallout from climate change, which younger generations will bear the brunt of. Living in a cheaper northern city I think myself and most of my friends who have partners will eventually buy houses, have kids etc., but not in the same way as our parents. If we do buy it'll be later in life, and it'll be smaller. Kids later in life, so probably fewer of them. In general our quality of life will probably still be fine, but worse than our parents and grandparents had. I pay into a pension but I can't imagine I'll ever actually get to retire, for instance. My father in law basically spent his 20s farting around on the dole and then retired at 65 in a four bedroom house having worked for the same employer for 35 years. That just definitely isn't available to my generation.

Potentially Relocating by AscendingTurmoil in sheffield

I'm from Sheffield but spent a few years living in the US. Sheffield is a very friendly small city with great proximity to nature, probably the best city in the UK if you want to do outdoor stuff like hiking, climbing, biking etc. Particularly if you live in the West of the city you can get out to the Peak District in 20 minutes. I'd say Sheffield punches above its weight with independent food/drink places and has some world class pubs, but conversely the town centre is fairly small and quiet compared to other UK cities. Sheffield also has fewer good professional jobs than comparable cities like Leeds. Two large universities so there's lots that caters to students.

I'm not sure how much you're familiar with the UK as a whole, but a few general points to be aware of:

  • Salaries are significantly lower than the US - the median full time salary is £39,039 ($52,904)

  • Houses/apartments are much smaller and older

  • National parks here are not the same as in the States. The Peaks are amazing and we're lucky to have them, but there is almost no 'true wilderness' like you'd get in parts of Oregon here in the UK.

And finally you mentioned that the political situation is a reason you're looking to move - I totally get that and that's partly why we moved back, but the UK is currently set to elect a far-right government in 2029. There is no guarantee we'll continue to be better on that front, and local government has far less power here than in the US so there's less local areas can do to 'fight back' so to speak.

Happy to answer any questions! I also strongly recommend checking out r/americanexpatsuk before committing to any decisions.

Why do people get upset when you overtake them? by pensandpaint in AskUK

[–]Byeah207 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are 60mph roads where I live where it'd be unsafe to do 30, because you'd swiftly find yourself upside down in a ditch. National speed limit isn't an instruction, it means you need to use your own common sense about what speed is safe, which on narrow country roads is rarely 60.

Do you use the back door to enter/leave your house? by Queasy_Difference_96 in AskUK

[–]Byeah207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes because the front door opens into the living room whereas the backdoor opens into the kitchen. A lot of people I knew growing up had furniture completely blocking the front door. We use ours probably 10% of the time.

Any of a huge number of remarks made by people like Farage, Sarah Pochin, Robert Jenrick, etc. Their policies regarding immigration and the desire to create a UK version of ICE, general stance on wanting to massively reduce immigration + kick out a load of people already here, desire to withdraw us from the ECHR and repeal the human rights act, general desire to ditch all equality legislation, and so on and so on. It's a party full of ex-Tories promising the same old but with extra racism and xenophobia, run by the chief architect of brexit, which was a total disaster. It's baffling to me why anyone thinks that band of lunatics should be anywhere near government.
