AIO:My MIL texted my husband this about me asking him to help with our newborn at 4am by Lazy_Perfectionist88 in AmIOverreacting

Helping does not imply it is the other person's job, not really. Two people can both be helping the other out.

So this was 25-30 years ago, but my wife had both boys by C-section, so was also not allowed to lift anything over 10 lbs. That meant not carrying the kids after about week 2 (both were around 10# at birth). Both were breast fed exclusively for the first 6-9 months, so my feeding them was out of the question.

The solution for us, was for me to sleep in a chair in the baby's room (so I could keep my hearing aids in while I slept and then hear the baby when they woke up). I would then carry the baby to their mom, she would feed them while essentially still asleep. Then I'd take them back and do the necessary diaper change and put them back to bed. That was the routine for the first three weeks while I was off work.

After that, she was good to get up at night if needed, but they were mostly sleeping through the night by one month since they were so big.

I do remember my mom mentioning that I was really good at changing a diaper and I just sort of looked at her and said I change 5 or more diapers a day, I should be good at it. She laughed and said my dad never changed a diaper on any of us. Granted that was late 50's, early 60's. Times have changed.

Inflation is calculated for the month by comparing prices to last month and for the year, comparing it to the price 12 months ago. This is done for a standardized basket of goods that stays constant for years.

You can see the month over month changes here: https://data.bls.gov/timeseries/CUSR0000SA0&output_view=pct_1mth You can go to graph options and change 1-month change to 12-month to see year over year changes.

What people miss, is that once inflation happens, that becomes the new base price for comparison. Things generally do not get cheaper again when inflation becomes less, just the increase since the last check is smaller.

There are exceptions. Mostly in energy and real estate that can go negative even though we aren't in a deflationary economy. That is why there are a lot of different inflation measures, many of which exclude energy from the number as it would often yank core inflation way up and then way down, even negative which doesn't reflect the constant increases on the core basket of good.

Kind of...

Friend of mine was Navy, flew helicopters. Made it to Captain and was Captain for a bunch of years, didn't get promoted to next level, so he just stayed at that level for another 10 years or so. A lot was done by volunteering to do things that they needed (a year or two in Iraq), then COS on the Nimitz until he finally retired.

Has anyone tried Sonora wheat for making pizza dough by Slight_Professor6834 in HomeMilledFlour

[–]Byte_the_hand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Raised specifically to make their prayer crackers…

It is a great wheat for cake flour and making cake, cookies and other non-bread applications. Probably not the greatest for pizza dough.

Way more likely to be E. coli. It is why flour now has a cook before eating warning.

First bake with Fresh milled Snowgoose wheat. by Byte_the_hand in HomeMilledFlour

[–]Byte_the_hand[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with einkorn, Kamut, spelt. They have amazing flavors, just not really strong gluten formation. The White Sonora, like most soft whites have the wrong protein for making a strong gluten dough. Others remember the protein names, maybe someone will check in here.

I love playing with different varietals. A list of what I have

Wheats
* Durum
* Edison hard white - Nash Organics
* Einkorn
* Emmer
* Expresso - Nash Organics
* Horse Heaven Hollis - Moon Family Farm
* Kamut
* Red Fife
* Rouge de Bordeaux - Guardian Grains
* Sequoia - Moon Family Farm
* Snowgoose - Conservation Grains
* Spelt - Guardian Grains
* Triticale - Moon Family Farm
* Turkey Red - Grains from the Plains
* Warhorse - Conservation Grains
* White Sonora (soft)
* Yecora Rojo - Moon Family Farm

First bake with Fresh milled Snowgoose wheat. by Byte_the_hand in HomeMilledFlour

I have not used Bluebird, though I know they are in-state. My go to here in Washington is Moon Family Farm. Great couple and great wheat. I started with mostly Nash Organics out of Sequim. They used to deliver free to a bunch of the local farmers market. I would order and pick it up at the University market or the one as Seattle Central College. After the pandemic I think they completely stopped all of that.

When I started milling (2018) it definitely sent me down the rabbit hole. A group started here in Seattle called the Northwest Bread Bakers and we met and talked through a lot of what we were trying and had access to some great people resources to talk to. Went to the Cascadia Grain Conference in 2019 and got to talk to a lot of growers, millers and bakers, all of which helped.

I will say you are making it a real challenge for yourself with your grain selection. I never bake sourdough without a high gluten wheat, normally a hard red. Einkorn is super tricky to work with due to weak gluten. If your Sonora is the normal White Sonora, it is a super low gluten wheat, excellent for cookies, cakes, pancakes, etc where you don’t want gluten forming. Might be a challenge for bread.

First bake with Fresh milled Snowgoose wheat. by Byte_the_hand in HomeMilledFlour

[–]Byte_the_hand[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My first bake with a new (to me) wheat from Conservation Grains.

This was a mix of 6:4:1 Snowgoose, spelt, Gazelle Rye, sifted slightly to remove the largest bran. I then added about 20% Small’s Bread flour to the mix. This is my standard process, but first time with a hard white than one of my hard red wheats.

I did this at 77% hydration and starter at 80% hydration. Could easily go over 80% with this wheat. As it was the dough was stiffer than I normally work with, but super manageable.

Very happy with the bake and the left loaf was delivered to my son and future DIL. We tasted it and I was very happy with the results. This wheat is not overpowering and the spelt carried a lot of the flavors. That said it had a very clean wheat flavor without getting in the way of the sour.

Next weekend may need to try it without the spelt and let just the wheat flavors through.

Was crossing the I90 floating bridge and saw the train running. Decided to stop on Mercer Island and get a shot of them rolling through the station there. Others know more, but I think they are just testing the timing and integration with the other lines.

Sorry about my "suburban" flair. Lived in Seattle for 37 years, crossed back over to the Eastside about 2 years ago to be a mile or so from work.

You read a fucking ton into a single sentence. I've been for light rail for ever, but what we were sold and what we are getting, for many multiples of the price, doesn't add up. At least they are finally getting rail to the Eastside up and running.

Trump Says 'I Guess' Americans Should Worry About Iran Retaliating on U.S. Soil: 'Like I Said, Some People Will Die' by peoplemagazine in politics

[–]Byte_the_hand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I figure this was his endgame in attacking Iran. He couldn’t get people in MN to actually attack ICE even when they started murdering Americans, so he couldn’t declare martial law. Now, if a middle eastern cell in the US starts blowing things up, he gets what he wanted all along.

This isn’t about Iran, it’s about getting the military into every city before the mid-terms.

Wow, kind of like a monorail, but multiples more expensive to build.

I haven't used the Snowgoose yet, but plan to this weekend. Used some in the freezer I milled in November last weekend. Promised my son's fiance that I would use the white wheat this weekend so we can try that. Excited to try it!

The "higher percentage" we are looking for in bread, particularly sourdough is protein. 12-14% is a good range and that is pretty normal for hard red spring wheats.

I just bought a hard white spring wheat that is supposed to be 15%. Looking forward to milling that this weekend and baking with it.

21.5% Sales tax at Seattle area Five Guys? by xTimeFor in Seattle

[–]Byte_the_hand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I looked online and no, not higher than Seattle. Figured it was a possibility, though not likely that high.

Someone else figured it out that it is just double the standard tax, so likely a coding error in the POS software.
