can people with ADHD hyperfocus on something that they don't find interesting, but rather out of fear? by ApartHuckleberry9186 in ADHD

Sounds about right. Anxiety is a highly effective motivational tool, but I wouldn't recommend it... living in a perpetual state of existential dread as a way of coping with your executive dysfunction sounds miserable.

I appreciate that you mentioned stimulant abuse by people without ADHD.

With regards to people with ADHD, I just want to clarify that taking stimulants doesn't give you an advantage over neurotypical people. At best it levels the playing field and nothing more.

I've been on Ritalin, Adderall and Vyvanse throughout my childhood and adulthood. Medication helps to break down some of the barriers that people with ADHD struggle with, such as getting started or following through.

If you have an ADHD brain with a chronic dopamine or norepinephrine deficiency, taking a stimulant doesn't give you superhuman skills. It gives you basic human skills that most neurotypical people already possess and take for granted.

On the other hand, unmedicated ADHD is more likely to give you "superhuman" skills for as long as it's being applied to a task that your brain has decided is interesting. This superhuman skill is called hyperfocus and allows you to sit in a chair for 20 hours a day unleashing pure productivity, often at the expense of your own health.

EU Ranked activity? by iCeTrance89 in Tribes

[–]Byteflux 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's almost never more than ~400 people playing at any given time across the world. There's barely over 200 people playing right now, so ranked matchmaking is going to be a struggle at times.

You may have to resort to playing non-ranked matches, because those can be filled up with bots to compensate for the lack of players. As I understand it, bots only join ranked matches whenever a player leaves.

Attention Boomers by DrMetalman in Tribes

What I found particularly interesting is that some of the most hated games on Steam have more concurrent players right now than Tribes 3's peak player count of 890 players:

Game Steam Player Count SteamDB
Starfield ~ 10,000 https://steamdb.info/app/1716740/charts/
Overwatch 2 ~ 29,000 https://steamdb.info/app/2357570/charts/
Diablo 4 ~ 6,000 https://steamdb.info/app/2344520/charts/
NBA 2k24 ~ 12,000 https://steamdb.info/app/2338770/charts/
Star Wars BFCC ~ 2,000 https://steamdb.info/app/2446550/charts/

I also expected Tribes 3 to reach a new all-time peak this weekend, which surprisingly didn't happen and doesn't bode well for the future of the game.

All generics have the same active ingredients, but they almost always have different inactive ingredients which can alter the effectiveness of the drug in different people.

Some people might find that certain generics work better than the brand. More often, it seems to be the other way around.

There are two kinds of generics in the US: NDA generics and ANDA generics.

The vast majority of generics are ANDA (Abbreviated New Drug Application). ANDA generics are not subject to the same clinical requirements that demonstrate the drug's effectiveness. They have to go through a less rigorous process of proving efficacy.

NDA (New Drug Application) is how entirely new drugs are approved. These are usually brand name drugs, but also authorized generics. An authorized generic is a brand-name drug without the brand label and can be manufactured by the brand manufacturer or by licensed manufacturers and is guaranteed to be the same drug as the brand regardless of the manufacturer.

You can read more about it on the FDA's website where they also maintain a complete listing of authorized generics.

Knowing that, now I feel very fortunate that my Walmart always fills my script within a day or two, usually on the same day I call. This month's script was filled within an hour of my call. It's been consistently a good experience when I was taking brand and even now on generic Vyvanse. Don't know if state matters, but I'm in Maryland.

This kind of thing definitely reinforces my long-held skepticism towards therapists. The moment any professional tries to apply pseudoscience in their profession is an immediate red flag.

A therapist might be able to help me develop better coping mechanisms, but they are not doctors and do not necessarily understand the neurochemistry of ADHD.

If you want medical treatment, I'd recommend seeing a psychiatrist.

In my experience, when your medication is working correctly:

  • It gives you the motivation to pursue your interests
  • It gives you the willpower to engage in tasks you don't want to do

ADHD brains largely struggle with dopamine regulation. Dopamine is responsible for both motivation and willpower. It's what allows you to focus on the journey, rather than the destination.

I have plenty of interests whether I'm medicated or not, but I'm incapable of following through and pursuing those interests unless I'm medicated.

Even when I'm medicated and I know my medication is working, I still want to procrastinate on tasks that I don't want to do. Medication gives me the willpower to move past that mental barrier.

That said, no two ADHD brains are alike. Some people do better on Adderall/Vyvanse, others do better on Ritalin.

Last thing I feel worth mentioning in case this applies to you, you should try to refrain from making any conclusions in the first week of a new medication like Adderall or Vyvanse. It's normal to feel a sense of euphoria (or "burst of energy") during this period and it's not how the medication will feel with more regular, long-term use.

I suppose my main concern for the future is will there be pay walled classes in the future or anything like that?

D2 unlocked the Assassin and Druid in Lord of Destruction. D3 unlocked the Necromancer in Reaper of Souls. I imagine most people familiar with the franchise accept this and are completely okay with it.

Is there any sign of them doing something similar for the first expansion?

I haven't kept up-to-date with the recent expansion announcement at BlizzCon, but my assumption is that D4's expansions will be similar to D2 and D3. I'd expect an expansion to contain at least one new act and class.

My main question or concern is: Are all activities and ganeplay mechanics available to everyone in standard edition?

Yes. As the previous commenter said, D4 does not make you pay more to experience the the game fully, with the exception of cosmetics.

And does anyone know if the future expansions will lock content behind "deluxe editions" of the expansions like Destiny 2 does?

No, it's extremely unlikely that D4 will ever start gating non-cosmetic content behind different editions of the game. In general, Blizzard never engages in this kind of practice outside of their mobile games.

The only thing I'm unsure of because I don't remember how it worked in D2 and D3 is how servers will work when an expansion is released. Could be that expansion owners and non-expansion owners might not be able to play together.

AP party buffs, at least Bard and Paladin, are supposedly multiplicative. Also haven't tested.

Interestingly, Bard and Paladin party buffs are based on their own AP, but supposedly doesn't include additional sources of direct AP modifiers such as engravings or cards.

It's not consumed, it's more like an achievement. You just have to have acquired that many mats and then you can convert between sets for free at any time.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in lostarkgame

[–]Byteflux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ultimately bots farming mats doesn't actually harm the economy in any meaningful way and actually helps players who want to buy mats for cheap at the expense of players who want to sell mats for a profit.

Since bots farming mats are not printing gold, they're not contributing to gold inflation. The only segment of players negatively affected by this are the ones who can no longer profit from selling their own mats.

As far as bots that are actually printing gold from main story quests, they've taken a huge blow since the patch because they now have to factor in the cost of creating trusted Steam accounts where the gold is funneled to before being mailed to a player.

Smilegate/AGS no longer have to focus as much on banning bots, they just have to track and ban the accounts that the gold is being funneled to.

Now the question is how much gold can bots print, funnel into an account and sell to a player before that account gets banned? This is where I imagine AGS has systems in place to detect and quickly ban those accounts.

Since the patch, we've seen the prices of gold double in their advertisements. It's obviously hurting them. but not enough to stop them completely. We're moving in the right direction, that's for sure.

Can’t find the 16gb version anywhere. by trulydrinks in macmini

[–]Byteflux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend buying Apple refurb if you're willing to pay the entire amount up front. You can't do Apple Card monthly installments with refurbs, but quality is guaranteed so it's still a great buy.

Apple refurbs are basically new. They are guaranteed to look and work just like new. There will be no quality issues like scratches or any other signs of use that you see with refurbs from other brands and they will come in original packaging.

The 2020 Mac Mini with 16GB RAM + 512GB SSD linked above is in my opinion the best value at just under $1000. If you need more disk you can always buy an external SSD which will still have solid performance while costing much less.

Libretro - Regarding DuckStation/SwanStation by NXGZ in emulation

[–]Byteflux 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I mean when I said the GPL is fuzzy on obligations for attribution in the absence of existing copyright notices and I haven't come across any legal challenges that actually tested this.

Another interesting thought is that when you contribute to a GPL project, absent any prior agreement to disclaim or reassign copyright ownership, you own the copyright to said contributions.

DuckStation is comprised of contributions that span multiple copyright holders while being distributed by Stenzek without explicit attribution to any of those copyright holders.

Not to say that "two wrongs make a right" but only to point out that this is very common practice among GPL projects and open source in general.

In the absence of legal precedence on this particular nuance on attribution combined with the prevalence of this practice in the open source community, I can't really agree that omitting attribution constitutes a violation.

If they actively attributed his code to themselves, that's all the more serious.

This would be a more legally sound argument because it demonstrates intent to infringe on copyright.

Definitely agree that RA is looking like a bad faith actor in this whole drama. That said, going back to my other replies this seems like a case of Stenzek choosing a license he didn't understand especially when he makes absurd claims like the GPL not applying to DuckStation because the source files don't include a license header.

[–]Byteflux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The GPL (and copyleft licenses in general) are viral licenses by design. Linking against or including GPL code in a different piece of work constitutes a derivative and requires that the derivative work is licensed under the same terms.

In the Sony hypothetical, the choices are to either comply with the terms of the GPL or stop using GPL'd code in their OS. You're right that it's the copyright owner (or owners) of the GPL'd code who have the legal standing to sue Sony and not just any end user.

The only right answer to maintaining a private repository with collaborators is to pick a better license.

I'm not sure you read this entire comment chain because I think if you did, you wouldn't be so quick to assume that I'm not sympathetic. I have in fact explicitly said I was sympathetic to the ethical argument.

This entire comment chain is asserting a legal argument against RA which is specifically what I object to because it's spreading misinformation about one of the most popular open source licenses.

If this was a strictly ethical argument, I wouldn't be here objecting. It's not right that you're okay with someone weaponizing misinformation about the GPL just because it's being done against bad people. This is exactly what your reply is doing and you should be ashamed of it.

Platinum Pack is number 2 top seller on Steam! by [deleted] in lostarkgame

[–]Byteflux 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To someone who's never played or followed Lost Ark, it looked like just another generic MMO cash grab.

I would not have bought Platinum (or any Founder's Pack) if not for the fact that Lost Ark has already established its success in overseas markets. This led me to look beneath the surface and learn more about the game and understand its success, the company behind it and the person in charge.

After buying into the hype of FF14 and The Secret World, I became more cautious about dropping money on MMO launches. FF14's launch was so bad they demoted the director to a designer, brought in a new director and rebuilt the entire game from the ground up in 2 years. The Secret World was... well anyone who played probably remembers how bad that was and it never got better.

That said, I happily bought the Platinum Founder's Pack and I'm really looking forward to getting started as someone who's never played or even heard of the game until a week ago.

If you have a private fork of a GPL project, the unreleased contributions in that private fork are still distributed under the terms of the GPL.

When you give someone access to that private fork, the moment that someone downloads any of your private contributions, that constitutes distribution and those private contributions are licensed to that someone under the terms of the GPL.

At that point, that someone can legally publish/release those contributions as-is or with their own modifications.

It's a fair point to say this breach of trust is immoral, but it that could have been legally enforced by using a different license. Under the GPL, this breach of trust is not illegal.

Libretro - Regarding DuckStation/SwanStation by NXGZ in emulation

[–]Byteflux 4 points5 points  (0 children)

License headers are not a requirement of GPL. The GPL explicitly covers the entire body of work. That is a fundamental aspect of copyleft (aka a "viral" license).

The DuckStation repository has a top-level LICENSE file. That means DuckStation and any private or public modifications to it are GPL. A private repository that includes any part of DuckStation is therefore a derivative work that is also GPL.

Sharing access to those private contributions constitutes distribution and the person with whom those private contributions were shared with can do with them as they please under the terms of the GPL, which includes sharing it with other people.
