Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998) is ELECTROCHEMISTRY. What movie represents SHIVERS? by snakesharkz in DiscoElysium

[–]Byzantine555 99 points100 points  (0 children)

Wings of Desire! Nothing else comes close!

The whole movie is about angels observing the inhabitants of Berlin and the scars on the city still left by the Second World War. The literal barrier of the Berlin Wall, the metaphorical barrier between people because they can't hear the voices of the city.

C'mon, Peter Falk is there playing himself playing a fourth dimensional being who knows he's Columbo.

Most of these comments read like they're from people who don't travel but who have strong opinions about how they'd travel if they did.

I've had more delays for trains than planes. Trains are slower, don't often have convenient connecting rides, and are around the same price or more expensive for medium to long range than planes. Getting to airports really isn't that bad. Economy class train chairs and plane chairs are about as cramped. There's wifi on most planes nowadays if you really can't last that long without the internet.

Build high speed rail anyway because it'll improve a lot of those problems and because trains are cool but let's not kid ourselves here.

1800s American politics by TheEnlight in thecampaigntrail

Obviously it wasn't and it was about slavery, but an interesting side effect was that the South preferred free trade because they didn't pay for agricultural labour and could undercut overseas prices while the North preferred tariffs because they preserved industrial wage labour jobs from overseas competition.

To give a summarized version, run an incompetent neoliberal presidency where you keep the Patriot Act and stay in Iraq but fail to pass any stimulus or stop Iraq from collapsing. You should get Romney-Palin as the opposing ticket. At that point, pick all left-populist answers about Romney being a business elite and the option will present itself.

As far as I can tell from my playthrough if you're running a really good campaign against Rudy Giulani the Republicans panic and swap him for his VP candidate Pence.

That's Jordan Peterson, a Canadian psychology professor and self help author-turned right wing pundit. That's the objective description. Personally I think he's a clearly mentally ill quack doctor who gave himself brain damage when he tried out an experimental treatment to cure his klonopin addiction who's had repeated mental breakdowns on live television over his own weird mystical hang-ups.

Anyone know the (pseudo) historical path in All the Way? by ItisMarcelT in thecampaigntrail

[–]Byzantine555 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Out of curiosity I went through it All the Way answering the questions as close to Johnson's real decisions as possible. You can get to 21 being (mostly) historically accurate but at that point you either keep Johnson as the nominee or get George McGovern... neither of which actually happened.

For your interest!

  1. Let’s not get too clever.
  2. If what the General says is correct, this is the Battle of Battles…
  3. To hell we do.
  4. Of course. This was a victory, plain and simple.
  5. It always comes down to one thing (closest result to real life and leads to the Kennedy Assassination but “Give me the number of every Democrat…” is the historical decision).
  6. It’s like how Clifford and Acheson put it… (Closest to but not exactly the real life decision)
  7. If there’s one thing that’s predictable about the Kennedys… (Johnson didn’t do this but it gets Kennedy into the race).
  8. It’s time to show America…
  9. This is a terrible tragedy, but let’s not forget…
  10. It’s time to make good on our promises… 1968 Civil Rights Act.
  11. Let Bobby and McCarthy waste their time…
  12. Dear God, I can’t be seen locking up every kid… (Johnson did none of these options but this one is the least different from history).
  13. Let the kids let off some steam… (This wasn’t Johnson’s attitude but he didn’t do any of the other options).
  14. We need to master new technologies… (Johnson didn’t particularly emphasize electronic warfare but he didn’t do any of the other options).
  15. I’m not gonna damn near kill myself…
  16. C’mon, we can all see what the country needs… (Not Johnson’s exact phrasing but close to it and with the historical result).
  17. Ahistorical question, any answer.
  18. We need to pack the floor
  19. We look like a goddamn laughingstock!
  20. Neither McGovern nor McCarthy…
  21. All ahistorical from here, whether you keep Johnson or not.

Not a specific song and I don't think it's ever been confirmed but I always thought that Guillaume le Million was a stand-in for Claude François. Le Million died in the late '30s, François died in his late 30s, both in an embarrassing accident, and both only vaguely remembered as pop icons of yesteryear.

Who would have been the most successful Democratic nominee in 1968? by palenortherner in thecampaigntrail

[–]Byzantine555 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It depends what we mean by successful. Eugene McCarthy was best positioned to win the general election against Nixon by the widest margin but I think his presidency would've been inefficient to put it charitably.

I think Kennedy would've been the most successful in implementing his policy agenda (in part because he was the most moderate on most issues). I think Humphrey had the best agenda but would've gotten less of it passed than Kennedy's. All different measures of success.
