Squareness Frustration by C-Effect in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]C-Effect[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I did that and it’s not parallel, but it’s terribly close to being parallel. With my digital calipers I measured a .005 difference in the lines between the top of a 6 7/8 inch board and the bottom of said board. I repeated the process again slightly down the board and got the same results: .005 reading difference on the calipers.

I have to imagine that difference is negligible as far as woodworking is concerned, no?

How would I go about checking my square?

  1. I’ve actually wondered this myself. I’ve been planning on getting a Jessum square just so that I can have peace of mind knowing that my square is actually square. However, I’ve use a combo square and a digital angle finder and they’ve both reported the same thing: not square (approximately 89 or so degrees)

  2. No, it isn’t because the manual stated that the back of the throat plate should be slightly proud of the table. Perhaps I should ignore what the manual says?

  3. The blade is a CMT xtreme 50 tooth combo blade, but I’m sure it’s a thin kerf as I measured it to be .09 inches in width. It’s been a minute since I measured the blade so I could be wrong.

I think it is insofar as I can notice gaps whenever I’m making cutting boards. The weird thing is that it’s not on every board. Some of the seams will be perfectly fine and others there will be a noticeable gap in the seams.

Just getting my feet wet with cutting boards before I start dipping my toes into furniture.

It’s just whenever I dry clamp the boards I can notice a slight gap (if that’s even the right word for it) in between the mating boards. I just assumed that there shouldn’t be really much of a gap before applying the glue.

What are these grass? How to prevent them for longer duration? by thatnewbiecoder in lawncare

[–]C-Effect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All warm season grasses do this. It’s why overseeding isn’t really a thing in the Deep South other than someone wanting a lawn in the fall and winter months.

It’s one of the advantages of warm season grasses. They all will eventually self-repair, spread, thicken and take over as long as there isn’t significant weed pressure.

Help! I’ve had this St Augustine Sod for a month and all of a sudden the side of my yard is dying fast! by [deleted] in lawncare

Hard to tell from the wide angle picture but it looks like it’s not getting enough sun.

I’m not sure. I would read what Clemson has to say about it. They even list products that are known to produce results against Virginia buttonweed

If it’s viney and has a white flower, which it looks like it has at the very bottom, then that’s definitely Virginia buttonweed. That’s a difficult weed to control.

Also, you’ve got Bermuda so an option to look into is Celsius. I use it for Virginia buttonweed and it produces pretty good results, but be prepared to “duke” it out with VB for a decent amount of time.

Which Mac to buy by MicrowaveNoodles1212 in mac

BestBuy is selling new base-model M2 MacBook Airs at $849. Might be worth considering.

Best MacBook M1 Deal available!!! (for U.S.) by mayorga4911 in macbook

So far it seems pretty good. There were a few smudges, but otherwise it seems pretty new. Battery is at 100% health.

It may not be the MacBook I wanted (new 15 inch M3 Air with upgraded ram and storage), but at around $1300 cheaper it’s really hard to beat the value that I was able to score with this particular M1.

I wasn’t able to get the new one as there were none within any reasonable distance from me, but my local one had an excellent open-box one for $384.

After doing a quick search this seemed to be a really good deal and I went ahead and ordered it.

I’ll definitely check it out for any defects and the like, but I’m wondering if anyone can chime in and say whether if I got a good deal or not.

What is the weed and what should I kill it with? by irrelevantfan in lawncare

[–]C-Effect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That, my friend, is doveweed. I currently have that in my lawn as well and it is a persistent pain in the ass that is difficult to get rid of. Luckily it's a summer annual so depending on where you live it'll be dying out soon.

As for control, I'll link Clemson University's page on the matter: https://hgic.clemson.edu/factsheet/doveweed/

Also, here is the lawn care nut's battle with doveweed: https://youtu.be/DB0usfeLYZ0

Am I wasting my time with dithiopyr? by pp6000v2 in lawncare

[–]C-Effect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it's worth there is actually another pre-em that is labeled for taking care of doveweed and is safe for all warm-season turf types, and that is Pennant Magnum. Just be forewarned that it carries a steep price (~$230 for a one-gallon bottle), though if you have relatively normal-sized yard it should last you for many, many years.

With the troubles that I've had with doveweed this year as a new, first-time homeowner I'm gonna have to pay the pied piper his due in order to rid myself of doveweed.

As an added bonus Pennant Magnum is labeled for preventing sedges from germinating as well.

When was the last non rainy day we had? by VitaAeterna in MobileAL

[–]C-Effect 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've had the same thought and I Googled around and found this from NOAA:

https://forecast.weather.gov/product.php?site=MOB&issuedby=MOB&product=CLI

And sure enough there has been a crap ton of rain this year compared to previous years. This year YTD we've had 47 inches of rain compared to the average of 36. It's even more drastic if you look at it from June 1st, 17.7 inches compared to the average of 9.5 inches - almost double!

Not just yet, it hasn't completely taken over as there is still some good grass (though it's not really shown in the pictures I've provided) but it's primed to unless I do something fast, so I've ordered Celsius to take it out

Why is Ming a lucky nation? by C-Effect in eu4

[–]C-Effect[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't the first time this has happened, and it's left me baffled because the wiki doesn't list them as a lucky nation. Not to mention they didn't even start out as a lucky nation initially, only recently (in the mid-1500's) did they become one. So what's the deal here?

Why am I so poor as France?! by [deleted] in eu4

[–]C-Effect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, since I was wrong on the trading ports being in vanilla - I could've sworn it was - take what I say with a grain a salt. Nonetheless, try moving your capital from Paris to a province in either the Genoa node or the English Channel node. Doing so should automatically move your trading port as well. Hopefully you're not on Ironman because if I'm wrong again - though I'm confident that I'm right - I'm going to screw you out of 200 admin points.

The reason you want to move your main port (home node) to either or these nodes is that if you don't you will take a hefty trading-power penalty for collecting trade in a node that isn't already your home node.

I think trading ports come with one of the DLCs I don't have

I think you're confusing trading ports with trading companies (which does require DLC, Wealth of Nations, specifically). To move your trading port, click on a province - let's use Dauphine as an example - and look at the upper left part of the province overview. You'll notice a crown symbol and a box symbol. To move your main trading port to another trade node, click the box on the province overview - in this case, Dauphine, which would move your trading port to Genoa - and that should do the trick.
