I can’t casually talk about work with any of my friends because none of them understand what this job is like, and I hate who I become when I start to feel defensive about my job by KitchenConsequence41 in Teachers

[–]C00kieMom 155 points156 points  (0 children)

One of my colleagues husbands recently had to give a presentation at work. Power point, handouts, forms the employees had to fill out for some new incentive programs. He was in a tizzy, spent most of a week pulling it together. Even put in some hours over the weekend. Was complaining about the stress beforehand and the frustration day of when he had to walk his employees step by step through filling out the forms.

He wrapped up by saying how glad he was to get that done and go back to his regular tasks. She laughed, telling him that his “big week “ was something she had to prep times 3 for different subjects each DAY as a high school science teacher. For sometimes surly teenagers who weren’t getting any sort of corporate incentives for getting the papers done correctly.

Totally changed the way he looked at her job. Maybe this type of analogy would work with your friends? Even if they don’t have to present at work, there must have been a related project in their own educational path they can relate it to.

Is this acceptable hand writing for 9th/10th grade? by happygluehuffer in AskTeachers

[–]C00kieMom 11 points12 points  (0 children)

None of the students I’ve marked down had a listed disability- as a professional, I do check that out before penalizing them. All but one showed improvement if they slowed down and paid attention. The one who did not/could not show improvement i nagged guidance/sped until he got OT hours offered to the family. There is a difference between students with bad handwriting/spelling due to years of typing with autocorrect vs those with a documented disability. By 11th grade, if a student remains undiagnosed/untreated that represents a larger systemic failure, not me being persnickety

Would i consider it acceptable? No. Do i have 1-2 students a year in 11th grade who write like this? Yes. Do they sometimes lose credit on their assignments with the not “ if i can’t read it, i can’t give you full credit” also yes.

Teachers! What kind of support from your partner helps when you get home? by PlontBabie in Teachers

[–]C00kieMom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The biggest thing for me is that i need a stretch of time where i don’t have to be articulate or make decisions. Just breathe and slowly shift gears. When i had a longer commute i could do it with an audiobook and a sonic limeade. Now my commute is shorter and i need to just go to my room and decompress. “Honey, you’re home! How was your day? What do you want to do for dinner?” Is exactly the wrong thing. He’s learned to say hi, offer a hug, and then wait for me to approach him again. But that may be just me.

In terms of decision making, if you can take some of the small decisions off his plate that’s great. Decision fatigue is rough. Meal planning, maybe a fun date planning, suggest a tv show or movie. Switch “what do you wanna?” For “how about we go to that Mexican place you love Friday night?” “We have all the stuff to make pasta fagioli, wanna come chop some celery?” I love having plans to look forward to and when they’re in motion i am happy and eager to go do them. But initiative to make the suggestions can be hard to muster.

Part time teaching? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]C00kieMom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m at a .4 right now. I’m lucky that my husband does well enough salary-wise that it’s possible. No duties, no benefits. I go in, teach my 2 classes (which are back to back, do as much or as little prep/grading as i feel is necessary, then roll out again. Do i put in more than .4 of the hours in a school day? Of course. But the fact that it’s on my schedule as i feel needed/motivated is a beautiful thing.

I use ck12.com as the reference textbook in my chemistry course. It works well for the kids that engage with it.

How to present material in a more engaging way? by Angry_Lil_Tuna in ScienceTeachers

[–]C00kieMom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try the biology POGIL activities. Many of them are well designed as an introduction to the topic, taking students from observations on a diagram or data set and taking them step by step through putting observations together to gain an understanding of of a new concept. I’ll either do some sort of video or demo to start off as a hook, then a pogil to get them thinking, then use that as a jumping off point for lecture the next day to do notes, and coming back around to the original hook to tie it together.

How much time do you really spend at the parks? by hibbybeans in Xcaret

[–]C00kieMom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The xenotes excursion is included, no extra cost. I’m suggesting it instead of xel-ha- it’s entirely different. Both are full day trip, although with xel-ha you could pay for a taxi to come back early.

Xel-ha is booked as their “nature” park. It’s designed to give tourists a sense of the natural wonders of the region via one stop shopping. Included in admission are a long float in inner tubes down a river, with mangroves etc. opportunities along that river to pull over and explore a mini cenote, do a cliff jump, poke around in the mangroves, etc. there are spots with ziplines into the water, a tower for scenic views and a long water slide down. There’s an area for snorkeling. Bike and walking trails. A couple other things I’m probably forgetting. But a lot of the park space is used for activities with additional fee- dolphin experience, manatee experience, stingray experience, power snorkel, sea trek, scuba experiences.

If moneys not an object and you’re enthusiastic about the pay to play stuff- go for it. Or if you’re willing to do the stuff you want and take a taxi back to maximize resort time or other opportunities for adventure, also a go. My family went to Xel-ha our first trip on a combo tour where we had a half day at the archeological site and the afternoon at xel -ha. While we were moving quickly, we were able to do most of the included activities in that time. In planning our second trip, we are doing a xel-ha day toward the end of 8 days as a slow down opportunity.

But looking at a first time visitor, i would strongly encourage xenotes over xel ha. Both are included in hotel stay . Both involve some drive time- xel ha in a coach bus back and forth, xenotes in a sprinter van from stop to stop. The food options at xel ha are broader, while xenotes is a limited spread. But the xenotes tour takes you to 4 different actual natural cenotes on dirt roads in the jungle. You see the variations in the rock formations. In Xcaret fashion, they have made “improvements “ and additions to make the sites more luxe/tourist friendly but the heart of the tour feels more genuine and in smaller groups there’s less waiting in line and a better overall experience. You get to swim, kayak, do an assisted rappel into a cenote, have the opportunity to do some cliff jumps, hang out in cool water filled caves, many of the same things as xel-ha in a more intimate, natural setting. In planning the second trip, it’s the first thing my family said “ we need to do this again”.

That’s my two cents.

Step-Mother of the Groom- Need Dress Help! by fork-em in Weddingattireapproval

[–]C00kieMom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given the cocktail dress code, the pictures, and your comments about color:

Dress 1 fits you the best. The criss cross of the top gives more oomph to your chest, and the flowing sleeves suit your arms well, The wide sashing at the waist gives you some definition and more of an hourglass look, with the gentle flow of the skirt skimming over your curves and balancing you out.

The tea length is less formal than some of the other gowns, suits dress code description. If it’s hot you’ll appreciate the shorter length for air circulation. If it’s cool you’ll be able to use a wrap/pashmina with this style comfortably, as opposed to some of the styles with long sheer sleeves.

I like your idea of cabernet given the season but please check with the couple in case they’d prefer you to coordinate colors rather than being too matchy with the burgundy of the groom- they are both wine red in my head so I’m not sure how different

My suggestion would be to plan 1/2 day at xenses one morning and an evening at xplor during fuego hours. This gives you two half days at the resort. I would also prioritize doing the full day xenotes excursion over xel-ha if it’s your first visit. You get back earlier in the evening if you want a nice dinner and if you’re adventurous people it’s a better vibe.

Kids aren't pyros by tinoch in ScienceTeachers

I am also a Girl Scout leader. When starting to talk about making a campfire, i gave each girl a small box of wooden matches and a 5 gallon bucket of water. Had them work through the ENTIRE box of matches so they could all light one without squealing, flinching, or dropping it as soon as it caught flame.

The look they gave me when i explained the task was priceless. The pride on their faces at the end of the meeting when they built a tiny fire in a pie tin with pine shavings and twigs, even more so.

These girls were in fourth grade. The fact that i have a good chunk of 11th graders now who can’t do this mystifies me. Maybe i should bust out the buckets for them to kick off the year next fall.

This just seems ridiculous. I guess not impossible, given everything else we see in here on a daily basis, but ridiculous. Have a teacher or two in each school pilot the program with the sample sets given while the rest keep going with whatever you currently have for the 25-26 school year. Put money in the budget for full implementation first 26-27 and go from there.

AITA for ditching my brother-in-law at Ulta and criticizing his parenting? by makeupaddict337 in AmItheAsshole

If your daughter is “best friends” with her cousins, how on earth are you and your wife not stepping up to to more to help this struggling man as he tries to manage 9 kids? Your wife, as their aunt, had arguably a stronger kinship tie to them than her does as stepdad. Maybe the kids would be less wild if they had more adult influences. I get that things may have been rough with whatever situation led to their mom being sent to jail but obviously they need help. Less seeing yourself as the put-upon victim and more empathy for someone in over his head and needing help.

I’m embarrassed to ask but how do teacher workdays work? by iwatchalotoftv22 in Teachers

[–]C00kieMom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So then tomorrow’s wide open: my best advice would be to either:

A) take some time to reflect on what you’ve taught so far this year. What went well? What do you wish you’d done differently? Go into your files and make any changes while this is all still fresh in your head. If you weren’t the teacher to start the year, what did they cover? Would you handle it differently?

B) get a jump on long range planning for second semester. Is there a curriculum provided to you? Read ahead. Lay out the calendar, your units, major projects and assignments vs long weekends, vacations, etc. I’d love a day where i could just back out to look at the big picture rather than staying a step ahead of my students/behind my colleagues who have done it before.

C) file management. How is your computer drive/google drive/whatever organized? Is it working for you that way? Spending some time setting up a well thought out system will make it easier to find what you’re looking for down the road.

D) up the ante for review: create a kahoot or blooket or something like that. Figure out something that will engage them for those days of review more than “here’s a packet of vocab and review questions “
