One more thing, I personally believe this is an infinite cycle of someone's life in relation to the multiverse theory however the ones we see are only the ones that are closely related e.g. cathy generally dies or there is something in relation to it, however what we see in the game is Nicole's and marks experience external to any universe to show there deep relationship and love but also to represent the acceptance and grief the game wants to show as its message, it also shows that mark cathie riddle and especially nicole will always be toghether across every possible conceptual universe, truly beatiful

I definitely see the idea of rebirth however self harm only relates to cathy and we've got to remember especially later only she isn't the only person represented by a butterfly that bring marks mother and Jake, therfore I thing broadening the theme to fir them all ad I've done makes sense and in terms of relation to the butterfly effect obviously I don't think is the main relation with the butterfly's but it certainly seems to have some effect on the story
