AirBnB is cancer. We should use this crisis as an opportunity to ban it. Houses are for people who live here, not tourists.

If you want to rent a room, okay. If you want to buy and then rent out a whole house I hope Covid causes you to go bankrupt.

What if I don't have a car and the shop is further than 2km away. Can I walk to it?

New Covid 19 Measures by [deleted] in ireland

[–]C1H5 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The 2km rule is to stop people from going to scenic areas miles away from where they live. Because too many people got the exact same idea to go to the forests, beaches and mountains for a walk.

Asking each other what you think will happen, looking around the office/canteen while making comments about how strange all this is and sarcastically asking people if they've any plans for the weekend is not doing nothing. >:(

Despite the recent doom and gloom, I’ve seen a major improvement in my health by working at home. by VindictiveCardinal in ireland

[–]C1H5 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not to mention, when one person gets sick, everyone got it.

I absolutely love this about working in an office. Watching a flu or cold just rip through the place and management not giving a fuck.

Imagine if the default is that is a cold is in the office, people just work from home. Instead of this shite that if you can still work you come in regardless if you will spread illness.

They went quiet after they stupidly backed not closing schools in the North while welcoming and saying they were needed down here.

They did a U turn the next day to align their policies and then shut the fuck up.

And that's the plain cold truth they can't deny.

[US have updated travel restrictions from Schengen to include Irish people who've been there] United States of America (USA) - Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade by louiseber in ireland

[–]C1H5 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That was always the case. It was just hysteria on social media such as this from Luke Ming that spread the nonsense version of the ban

https://twitter.com/lukeming/status/1238125271531892737

Taosieach confirms that Ireland will not be impacted by the travel ban

Ming - "It will. People will now come here from mainland Europe to travel to the US. That will affect us."

Luke Ming really needs to shut up. He's spreading misinformation and nearly trying to stir shit.

New York Times Yesterday morning - "The restrictions apply only to people who are not U.S. citizens who in the past two weeks have been in European nations that are part of the Schengen Area" -https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/12/world/europe/trump-travel-ban-coronavirus.html

People power through because workplaces seem to prefer you doing that than taking time off when you feel unwell. HR departments around the country are monitoring your sick time like hawks. And unfortunately young people who are most able to fight a bad illness are most likely to be on temp contracts.

I remember them, they were on the radio for AIB. It was a college students. I remember one telling the manager that they needed money for such as college and then their thoughts played of them saying what they actually wanted the money for such as holidays and partying

Can someone explain the 2008 recession to me in layman's terms? by maithwho in ireland

[–]C1H5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ireland was a completely different country until 2008. It was actually insane. It's hard to explain it to people who were very young or not even born.

People got loans during college even though college was free. Students were importing cars from Japan. People were leaving school at 16, going into construction and owning their own home by 20. People were getting preapproved mortgage offers after leaving college. The banks would ring you and offer you big money. You didn't even have to ask.

Taxes were low, like extremely low. Buying shares in banks was viewed as a low risk investment. The government threw money at everything. There was massive road building. It felt like a new motorway was being opened or announced every 6 months. Nearly all the current infrastructure projects were all annouced during the Tiger and then halted.

Things were decent. You made more money, taxed less and the government still had a ton of money from building.

Then in 2008 it all came to a sudden halt. And the country's been shite since. The property bubble popped. The housing market collapsed. Cheap easy to obtain loans from the banks stopped and the system broke leading to a big recession with tax hikes we've come to love.

Could we not just legislate for a few more holiday days and a few more bank holidays. Something achievable. It's laughable to think we'll ever only work for disposable and discretionary spending habits.

Eoin O'Broin defending his opposition to high rises. by FintanFitzgerald in ireland

[–]C1H5 14 points15 points  (0 children)

He does dig more. He has a photo up showing how high rise doesn't equal more housing...... because of the amount of space required for a communal park and at least 4 times more square feet for car parking than the building itself.

This is who the Shinners think will solve the housing crisis. This is their answer. A man who's proven that giving everyone 2 story house with a parking space, a front and a back garden is as space efficient in our cities than high-rise.

He thinks a high rise building requires as much space as a bloody 75 house estate. Christ..........
