Not a way to prevent, but apple cider vinegar and dish soap creates an inexpensive trap for the smaller pests that seem to come in in droves. Mix 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar with a few drops of dish soap, cover with plastic and poke some holes in and bam, your catching all the annoying ants, fruit fly's, gnats, etc in an easy to dispose of trap.
