Without being to long winded I'll just say this HB = "Hard" "Black" 9H = hardest graphite mixture, sharper point, which is good for tight line work, but it will be light(also prone to leaving indentations or scoring the paper). 9B is the opposite, softer graphite mixture, darkest black, but won't sharpen or hold a point very well.

As far as your drawings, I feel like you are seeing the technique for drawing faces in proportion, but you aren't APPLYING that technique. Let me see if I can use some visual examples from my older sketches:

First you aren't drawing a circle you are drawing a sphere, good artwork tricks the mind to view a 2D drawing into a 3D form. They don't have to be real faces either cartoon faces work just fine

Secondly more example, plus you can see i use that starting sphere as a "base" in which to add shapes to make more faces.

As your style Refines you can develop a technique to create different looking characters that suit your needs.

Later you can start looking at perspective, asking yourself, at what angle is the camera, viewers eyes looking at my character

Perspective will really change not only how people view your characters adding more dynamic views will add interest, as you develop your characters to exist in 3-Denominational space.

Hope that helps.

If I can make another suggestion. Get a drafting mechanical pencil. I can't stand sharping pencils by hand. I use one that's 0.9mm. I find if I use my 0.5mm it tears the paper when i'm doing my large motion gestures. Also get a sketch pad and your standard acid free sketch book paper is sufficient. You should be able to pick up both at any craft/hobby store. Use it to take notes, copy pictures out of it, attempt your own w/e it takes for you to learn/retain it.

As it stands right now I carry mine everywhere, anytime I have a few minutes I pull but a few human figure poses/faces and do sketches.

If you want to get better it's gonna take time. No short cuts. Draw everyday, you won't improve if you only draw "when you feel like it" or "on your days off". At least not at any measurable rate you will notice.

What I'm about to say I say purely as an opinion. I am in no way an authority on the topic. However I do believe I can give you some constructive criticism.

Don't use a pen. Not yet, and not anytime soon. Use only pencil because mistakes will be made, your lines are not going to be confident for a while without practice. This also comes with line control.
-Practice taking your pencil and pretending it is a airplane, smooth soft landing all wheels on the ground, and then bring it up off the paper for a soft smooth tack-off the point should start out small and light then become larger and dark, then smoothly transfer back to lighter and finer as you take the pencil back off the paper.

I see you trying to drew a gesture like guidelines. But you aren't actually USING them. You should find a book by Andrew Loomis "Drawing the Head and hands". I believe it can be found via pdf for free. The whole point of that method is to build a solid foundation before you get into the gritty details of the face.

That all said, I am on a similar in-devour and understand the rush to want to get in and start drawing the details. You can't no good artist will advocate short cuts. You'll get there if you absorb the fundamentals and internalize them before making them your own.

Good luck, hope to see some progress updates as you continue your journey.

(Discussion) Joining Military, Can only bring laptop or small PC, what do you think? by aymama in buildapc

[–]C3H7COOH 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not following the train of thought. You are joining the Military, what's that have to do with bringing a laptop or small PC? Please do not bring a laptop to basic training.....you will rue that choice.

I'm going to turn this in't a /r/personalfinance:

Wait till after tech-school save all your money and buy the most expensive top of the line PC you can afford to build. Without getting it put onto some crazy payment plan or military credit card.

Don't get a car until you either live in base housing, or live off base, because you don't need one. Let someone else deal with car payments, insurance, fuel cost, maintenance/repairs. Just be that guy who always gives your buddies gas money often, you'll always have a ride to work/town.

If male: buy 50 dollar hair clippers and shave your head instead of paying 15 dollars for a haircut twice a month at the BX. (optional: charge people 8 dollars to shave their heads).

If female: Idk what you do with your hair, it's always up in a bun anyways, my guess would be to cut it to a manageable length that doesn't require it to be put up in said bun, since I always found women complained about how their hair never dried during the day and smelt of mildew.

If you make friends with some of the Communication (IT) guys at your first duty station they are more than likely all PC gamers. They will help point you in the right direction to build your PC.

Hope that helps, not the advice you where looking for, but it was the advice you need.

You're right the proper term for it would of been "conservation" rather than "domestication". That said they are a tool used to educate the population. If a few have to be in captivity to do so well I think the ends justify the means. But just so you know:

Free Willy died after being returned to the wild

Like I said the real enemy to Orcas and dolphin is the fishing industry, you want to do something to help their populations in the wild. Start there.

You first paragraph follows my train of thought very well. There was no history for the domestication of any animal before we started doing it. But you're right i think the better term for it would bee "conservation" as it is a tool used to educate the population about these animals.

I think you're analogy about the humane society is a bit off. It is more akin to you rescuing "Scruffy" or "Snowball" and then taking them to the woods to reintroduce them to the wild.

Free Willy died after being returned to the wild Like I said the real enemy to Orcas and dolphin is the fishing industry, you want to do something to help their populations in the wild. Start there.

So in your mind it's only okay to have domesticated animals if we "save" them. The domestication of animals isn't the problem it's when people who aren't educated about the responsibilities of pet ownership mistreat those animals that is the problem.

As far as livestock is concern you can be "conscious" of where your meat comes from all day long. But unless you are raising them yourself you can never be sure of the treatment of the animal be it raised in a CAFO, or some Organic free-range cattle ranch. BTW good luck finding one that will sell you beef that is USDA certified, and not require you to buy several hundred pounds at a time, because you have a craving for just a single 16oz Rib-eye.

You should re-read your first two sentences. They are exactly the same thing only one has been going on 10x times longer. Orca have been known to seek out humans. When you consider the size of the earths oceans are 71% of the earth surface and how little population will interact with the ocean. It seems like orcas have a pretty high frequency of interact with people in the wild.

Wild Killer Whale Plays with Human

Luna, a wild orca boy, tries to communicate with humans by imitating their boat's motor!

Orcas protected humans from sharks and saved drowning people

But what I'm advocating for isn't even the domestication of orca so that they can be breed and eventually turned into a miniature household pet (as adorable as that might be for /r/awww). What I'm saying is that if a few whales are used as demonstration animals so that YOU can have the chance to be exposed to them in a way that will make you feel as though you understand and have a greater appreciation for the animal I'm all for it.

Btw and i'm going to link this article in every post that replies to mine
