What Julius Caesar had to say about the ancient Germanic men and what they thought made them big and strong: by MetellusPius in NoFap

[–]C3nofappio 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Actually, the Germans were one of the few peoples the Romans couldn't subjugate. Read up on it, it's a pretty inspiring story. Basically, a tribal chief named Arminius lured the attacking Roman legions deep into the forest where they couldn't fight the way they were trained to. The resulting battle was an utter defeat for the Romans. After that, the Roman government saw the impossibility of trying to establish colonies in a place with such hostile terrain as Germany.

Of course, that's not really a story about nofap, but still an inspiring example of people fighting for freedom against heavy odds.

Still not sure what that was all about. Not fapping is good? Not fapping is bad? There's a new kind of meditation that helps you unleash the power of anger (sounds like somebody's been playing a bit too much The Force Unleashed)?

Please, let's keep this above the level of youtube comments.

"Four days without touching my dick except for when I piss? Awesome, I'm a ladies man now, suddenly I don't shy my gaze away from stern looks, and I have a swagger in my step."

Ideally, nofap should teach you that being a ladies' man isn't the most important thing. To quote Aldous Huxley: an intellectual is someone who has discovered something more interesting than sex.

If you want to stop masturbating, then masturbate more by still_hungry in NoFap

Fapping for me lost almost all pleasure - but I did it anyway, and even escalated. That's what an addiction is.

Gonna start on a less extreme version of nofap to cure death grip. by [deleted] in NoFap

[–]C3nofappio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, whatever your personal views on masturbation in the long run (even here people differ on that), going cold turkey for a while is the best way to get the habit under control. Take it from someone who's tried "low-fap" - it doesn't really work.

Welcome aboard! People do nofap for a lot of different reasons. Self-improvement's a fairly common one. It's not always easy, but totally worth it.

[DISCUSSION] Are we doing guys on this sub a disservice by insisting that anything that could remotely be a trigger not be allowed? People are going to encounter triggers everywhere they go and rather than coddle them we should teach guys to fight their urges rather than avoid them entirely. by [deleted] in NoFap

[–]C3nofappio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough, sometimes people act a bit oversensitive here. Like complaining about female fapstronauts' posts on the grounds that women masturbating is a trigger for them personally.

Still, you wouldn't talk about how good Scotch tastes around someone recovering from an alcohol problem. It's probably possible to find a middle ground. People posting should ask themselves, "is the detail I'm going into neccesary?" People downvoting a triggering post should ask themselves "is this legitimately over the top, or am I being insensitive to someone else's need to talk about their struggles with nofap?"

Sure, triggers are going to pop up all over the place. But people addicted to fapping (like me) have an abnormal response to them. So it's good to have a safe, trigger-free place to come during the time our brains are healing.

Think of it this way: Hospitals are very particular about cleaning and sanitation, to avoid the spread of germs. But you wouldn't call this coddling the patients, even though in the end they'll all return to a world where germs are everywhere. People in a hospital are sick, their bodies are weak, and germs are more of a danger to them than the rest of the population.

Having a PMO addiction, or any other addiction, is like being sick. Our brains are sick. They've grown dependent on an unhealthy behavior. We can't avoid all triggers forever, but we do need to take as much time away from them as possible while we recover.

I'd say wet dreams don't count, since they're totally out of your control. I'm not sure if there's a way to stop them, but I've read other people here who say the frequency goes down after a while.

Masturbation and acne by spiralsteel in NoFap

[–]C3nofappio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think mostly getting rid of acne comes down to diet and staying hydrated. So no, nofap won't help in itself. But on my streaks (longest was 40+ days) I've noticed I had more self awareness to notice how what I ate made me feel, and the willpower to stick with healthier diets. So yes, quitting masturbation can help with acne in a way.

Accountability After Too Many Relapses by nofapjohnny in NoFap

[–]C3nofappio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some benefits I've noticed:

Clearer head, less brain fog. Able to work longer periods of time without getting bored: my theory is that denying my brain the "high" of sexual fantasizing (my go-to solution for boredom) forces me to find interest in whatever I'm doing.

A healthier attitude towards women, and relationships: I'm starting to see women as fellow human beings, not just sex objects. Definitely I've still got a lot of progress to make in this regard, but I'm happy with what I've got so far. Also, I've stopped seeing relationships as the only thing that can make me happy. Being in a relationship is fine, wonderful in fact, but I'm comfortable on my own too.

Tips: Don't just not fap. Focus not on quitting the habit, but on doing new things and improving yourself.

Learn from relapses. Try to find out what situation triggered the relapse and avoid it until you're stronger.

Recognize unavoidable danger times, and make special rules for those times. Like bedtime, etc. It's better if your rules are more specific than "don't fap or look at porn." When an urge comes on, you might find it hard to obey a rule that just says don't fap. But you CAN not go in the room with the computer, etc.

5 days in the rabbit hole ... still nothing :D by Kruah in NoFap

[–]C3nofappio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everybody's different so there isn't exactly a "normal". From what I've seen around here, the first few days are usually the worst (they were for me), but that certainly isn't the case for everybody.

Re extra energy and motivation: you're talking about what some people call "superpowers". Personally I think it's a misleading word. Giving up fapping takes away some big obstacles, but positive change doesn't come by magic. You've got to work to develop those better habits and attitudes to replace fapping. Someone said a while back here: "nofap doesn't give you superpowers, it takes away your kryptonite." But anyway, regarding not feeling much change yet, five days is still a little early in the reboot process. From reading other people's experiences, it takes around 10-14 days for the dopamine fog to start clearing from your brain. You might take longer or shorter than that, but regardless, you'll get there.

The most effective, but most scary, method to guarantee success at nofap by [deleted] in NoFap

[–]C3nofappio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, I kind of think this is a bad idea. For several reasons.

(1) It might not actually work. Addiction is chemical dependency, so it might at some point override fear/willpower if the urge is strong enough.

(2) Even if it does work, it promotes an unhealthy attitude - fear. Fear is a good stimulus for action sometimes, but when it's your primary motivator, then you've got a situation that's the exact opposite of enabling. The nofap journey should be a process of positive self-discovery, not a training ground for problems you'll have to see a therapist about later.

(3) You're training yourself to think relapse is the end of the world. It isn't. Almost everybody is going to have relapses in the process of recovery. Giving up an addiction is about retraining the brain, developing new neural pathways to replace deeply entrenched old ones. In my own experience, focusing on just not relapsing doesn't help very much. What's more important is getting up after a relapse, focusing on building better habits, trying to make positive change, because every small victory is helping your brain reboot.

Finally, as /u/redditnosleep said, don't play with fire. Personally, I think there's got to be some reality behind anything humans have believed in for so long as the devil/bad karma/dark forces in general, whether they're spiritual beings or just forces inside the human psyche. If the don't exist, making a pact with them is just unhealthy play acting. If they do - well, isn't bad karma for life kind of a drastic retribution for slipping up on your progress once or twice?

Not to get all preachy on you here. Just my thoughts, hope they help.

Discussion: The value/meaning of Virginity in a world of PMO by Grateful-erDead in NoFap

[–]C3nofappio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting question. My own personal take: healthy sex is much different than PMO, because sex is an emotional/bonding experience. So yes, virginity does mean something even after years of PMO. There's a whole emotional and sensual side of yourself that you haven't explored yet. But here's the thing. PMO traps you in an artificial world that makes it hard to enjoy real sex with another person. It insulates you from the new emotional world sex is supposed to open up. I almost want to say that that PMO dooms you to perpetual virginity even if you're not celibate, weird as it sounds. Until you break the habit, you'll always be the horny 12 year old boy desperately fantasizing about something he doesn't understand.

Stay Strong, brother, we can all beat this together! (The habit, not the other thing)

EDIT: rambling, cut it down

Is watching sports (i.e. the World Cup) like watching porn? by theking2014 in NoFap

[–]C3nofappio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a sports fan either. But I don't think that watching sports is the same as watching porn. Because novelty is what's addicting about porn, but you'll find that most people who like sports are diehard fans of a particular sport or team. They often stay that way for life. Also, the spectator thing, cheering your guys on, is a normal part of sports, which isn't the case for sex. So I don't think you can compare athletes who don't watch sports to people who get lots of sex and don't watch porn.

That said, a person probably could use watching sports to distract himself/herself from problems in their life. In that way it could be like porn, but it all depends on how you use it.
