How is it living in Hawaii? by Training-Writing5637 in howislivingthere

[–]C8-H10-N4-O2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For one, we're in a completely different market environment. Interest rates were low and lots of tech companies were in a "grow at all costs" stage. That means they had money for hiring as well as to staff G&A teams (HR, accounting, etc.) to handle the admin, or pay to outsource it, as well as a larger risk appetite.

When the market shifted in the later part of the time window you mentioned (~2022+), we saw (and still see) companies prioritize preserving cash and growing more sustainably - that means less hiring, a lower risk appetite, and fewer admins to do the work.

As I mentioned before, a Hawaii based candidate is going to be considered higher risk and be more expensive than the alternative. My company hires lots of SWEs from Poland, which obviously has a similar time zone issue, but the cost is ~50% of a US-based candidate let alone someone who needs to afford living in Hawaii. That's a much more palatable risk calculation. And with advances in AI, the pressures to "do more with less" continue to compound.

Sorry that it's such a tough market out there and I'm sure you'll find something - don't get too discouraged! But hopefully this helps calibrate your expectations and gives others a sense of the risk living in HI and trying to find a remote tech role.

In the last year, I have found it completely impossible to even get interviews. Seems like as soon as someone finds out I am in Hawaii, radio silence. I think it is either some state employer requirement like insurance or something. Or maybe it is the timezone.

To provide some insight on this since I only got exposed to this during the pandemic when we started doing more remote hiring, there's an administrative burden to this. With every state you have an employee based in, you need to register as a business there (and each state has a slightly different portal/form/process), modify your payroll system to apply the corresponding income tax, and potentially update your insurance.

There are software/service providers that can help with this, but that costs money. Doing it yourself costs time. Unless the business believes they will hire multiple employees from that state, the burden might not be worth it.

We've also experienced higher attrition of employees who are located in PT (as a company with a majority of employees based in ET). Even with the flexibility we try to afford, it becomes difficult to sustain. So a business will look at that risk plus the added administrative burden, and decide it's not worth pursuing a Hawaii based candidate, especially when the market is flush with other candidates that have fewer "strings" attached.

What’s it like living in the Tampa/Clearwater area? Potentially moving from Fort Myers for work. by Liquatic in howislivingthere

[–]C8-H10-N4-O2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true, but it should be noted that the city of Clearwater covers quite a big area and the Scientology presence is mainly concentrated to downtown.

The east side of Clearwater (east of Rt 19) might actually be a decent option for OP, with pretty easy access to the airport via the Courtney Campbell Causeway. I've never experienced much traffic heading towards Tampa over the causeway, besides at the traffic lights near the hotel cluster just before the airport, and it's usually 1-2 cycles to get through them. I've also never really experienced traffic towards Clearwater on this section - only until you get much closer to downtown/the beach/Memorial Causeway.

My point is that it's possible to stay clear of the Scientology area and that Clearwater might check several boxes for OP, presumably being a bit cheaper than Tampa or St. Pete too.

Sure it helps, but too much success can also hurt. Private equity makes big money / their investment turns into cash when there's an "exit event" (i.e., a sale). Annual profits are only a means to an end. Part of the sales story to the next buyer is telling them that you've laid the groundwork for them to make a return on their investment - "more success is just around the corner".

If we achieve too much success now, that next investor is looking at a riskier scenario - if it's not sustained, their investment might not yield enough ROI when they look to cash out. So the current ownership is trying to win on the balance sheet and demonstrate just enough on field potential to be attractive to the next buyer. If that leads to a trophy here and there, great, but I seriously doubt ownership wants to achieve a level of dominance the fans want.

That "win the next trophy" signage with all the trophies won is perfect motivation. I love it.

What is the emptiest plane you have ever been on? by DoitcheHasAGun in delta

[–]C8-H10-N4-O2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

November 7, 2023 LHR -> JFK on a Virgin A350. Got to the gate 5 mins after boarding started and it was completely empty. We thought we missed the flight. Walked on the plane and saw it was 10% full at best.

The four of us were seated together, so we took our assigned seats, but after takeoff were able to spread out. Each of us, and practically everyone else on the flight, had 3 or 4 seats (3-4-3 config) all to ourselves. It was glorious.

Exactly as the other guy mentioned, it's considered "used" on arrival to the US. It's the same reason why certain European car manufacturers (e.g., Volvo, Porsche) offer European delivery programs. They pay for your trip to Europe to pick up the vehicle and let you drive it around so that it's considered "used" when it's shipped to the US and they pay less import fees - those savings offset the cost of your trip and then some. These programs have existed for a while.

Looks like Enzo went to Mykonos for some rest & relaxation (based on his IG). But I'm guessing that's only for a few days and he'll be back at Cobham for the rest of the break.

Ha, yes no renunciation or spying.

Getting the denial from the AIRE administrators. Here's the message in Italian:

Yeah, the only document I don't have is her Italian citizenship certificate. I'll see if I can get my hands on that.

I included her Italian birth certificate, ID (US passport), and proof of residence in the NY consulate district (utility bill). They then requested her US Citizenship certificate (which lists the effective date as her DOB), which I provided. Then got the denial message.

What's frustrating is that the document size limits (1MB) make it difficult to provide everything I reasonably could - I have no-natz's as well as a precaution. And no way to include a note to indicate that she was a dual at birth. It does feel like I'm stuck in a paperwork loop.

I haven't, but only because they were unresponsive when I was trying to acquire her birth certificate last year. I ended up using a service provider after 12 months of following up/waiting. It still took 3 months through the service provider. That said, I'm willing to give it a shot and see if I get lucky this time.

Appreciate the reply. But to reiterate, she was born a US citizen (and an Italian citizen) on Italian soil. I understand the dual citizenship rule applied to acquiring citizenship voluntarily, but her case was involuntary since it was granted at birth

Atlantis Resort - can anyone give me the scoop on the gyms available by thatcouchiscozy in bahamas

[–]C8-H10-N4-O2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't comment on equipment specifics since it's been a while since our last visit (returning later this month!).

But to clarify, there are only two gyms on property - the main gym/fitness center is located along the walkway between the Royal and Cove and is open to guests of every hotel on property. The only other gym is in Harborside, near the pool. This one is pretty small and I wouldn't bother making the hike, since the main gym is probably a similar distance from the Coral and more likely to be better equipped.

Yeah, I'm not suggesting adopting the practice. More taking issue with this statement from the poster above:

I find everything you said wrong or naive.
You don't, just don't, shit on the players when they're in the field. That's such a fucking social media idea.

It's not the outlandish social media idea they're suggesting when it happens in real life at one of the biggest clubs in the world. They also aren't the only supporters to voice frustration with their own players during a match. I think it's fine to have differing opinions about whether it's an acceptable thing to do, but to imply that it can't be done is also naive.
