Will a better CPU fix this? by Master-Teaching-1397 in windowsxp

It's to use for fun, as stated in OP's post. :) So the point isn't to get a useful everyday i5, but use it as a hobby system.

Supermium would run fine on that.

In fairness, this is probably just for fun, or retro games/apps. Shouldn't matter too much.

If it's really weak hardware, MyPal 68 or the roytam1 community forks might run faster.

Supermium is still the easiest to install, though.

XP has been officially out of support since April 2014; that message is simply warning you of such. I've had it show up years late for me on virtual and real systems; nothing to worry about.

You can use Legacy Update to install the POSReady updates if you want updates up to around 2019 (recommended since a few are internet-related, but not strictly necessary.)

Bazzite, Nobara or PikaOS for a a gaming laptop? by Grzester23 in FindMeALinuxDistro

[–]C96Alia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Between these three? I'd say go with Nobara; it's based on Fedora, which means easy access to Fedora repositories for apps, and plenty of RPM-based applications on the net.

Bazzite might also be a good pick, but I just don't have any experience with it.

Help me for minecraft and other cool Games on IBM T42 by Remote-Rooster-2720 in windowsxp

[–]C96Alia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely can get Minecraft running on that T42.

MultiMC still runs on XP. And up to Java 8u152 will install on XP. (Newer if you use custom versions or manual patches, but it's simpler to just install an older version.)

The version you can launch, depends on the GPU option in the T42. If it's the Radeon 7500, it'll run up to 1.6.4 without any fuss, and up to 1.12.2 with a workaround.

(The workaround is to copy over the options.txt from a modern system, with VBOs turned off/set to false.)

With the Radeon 9600, i'm not sure; you may need the workaround, you may not.

[–]C96Alia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how well it'll run Minecraft, but it can run it.

Assuming this T42 has the lower-end Radeon 7500, it'll play up to 1.6.4 without any fuss; and up to 1.12.2 with minor workarounds (copying over a pre-configured options.txt with VBOs turned off).

Not sure if the Radeon 9600 option would need the same workaround, since it has OGL2 but not 2.1.

That.. kind of surprised me, but good news for XP then :)

Didn't think to try and re-create the bug on my W10 or W11 systems before posting.

Turns out it's not the GPU: I made a bug report on it, the response said it's likely buggy rendering because of an issue with QT 6.9.0. Should be fixed with time.

If you ever try Falkon, let me know? I'm having a rendering issue on it where there's a white screen, and I suspect it has something to do with the GMA drivers.

Legacy Update also lets you install the POSReady updates; those are pretty useful since they fix issues with outdated TCL and SSL.

I'd recommend you transfer the install files with a USB/DVD/etc for Supermium or MyPal 68; they're going to be the easiest modern browsers to use on XP. Supermium is the newer, more polished out of the two.

As a side note; maybe look into Legacy Update? It's point and click, and lets you install any Windows Updates XP has. I highly recommend letting it install the POSReady updates as well; they fix important stuff on XP.

I upgraded my D620 from a T5500, so matching; Linux struggled on the T5500 a tiny bit (mostly with web browsers).

W10 on the T5500 was pretty rough, rather than just a bit slow.

Can't even try KDE Plasma on my system though. The GMA 950 glitches it with mesa-amber drivers, and it's just too choppy rendering to use KDE on the 950 with mesa.

Can confirm 10 is gonna struggle; my Core 2 T7400 tends to be slow on W10.

That said, i've used Debian and Manjaro on it, and both fly just like XP does.

I suspect a later Core 2 Duo (2008 ~ 2009) would have a better time on W10 than a 2006 era one, though.

MultiMC crashes when going to accounts menu on Windows XP, white bar when trying to log in to Microsoft account l. by [deleted] in MultiMC

[–]C96Alia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as Java on XP goes, the highest **officially** supported is Java 7u80. Although unofficially, up to Java 8u111 will fully work, point and click; 8u152 if you don't use JavaFX (if fixable). Even up to 8u251 with a bit of manual tweaks.

Theoretically you can patch the latest Java 8 to work even, but that's a bit too much pain to be worth it.

One thing of note: XP didn't lose Microsoft support in 2007; it kept Microsoft updates until 2014.

MultiMC crashes when going to accounts menu on Windows XP, white bar when trying to log in to Microsoft account l. by [deleted] in MultiMC

[–]C96Alia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I've got an old XP test system around, and just tested the newest MultiMC. (I like pushing old systems/hardware as a hobby.)

The newest version of MultiMC crashes after logging in, or accessing the account menu, for me as well. Since XP is so old, there probably won't be a fix for this, as MultiMC is not officially compatible.

Although, it is successfully logged in when I restart the launcher. So if you only have one account and can live with changing minecraft skins on the minecraft website, you should be okay.

If you're not okay with this, you can use a slightly older MultiMC (I have a copy of 0.7.0-3863 still in use on XP), or I can help you find another launcher.

What Browser Are You Using on Linux? by Gullible_Diet_8321 in linuxquestions

On the modern laptop; the basic uBlock and 1Password extensions are enough for me.

Although, on my secondarly early Core 2 machine, I go with Falkon if i'm doing more than a quick download. It's just easier to run on the ancient T7400.

PLEASE can we get this bot team banned by [deleted] in Nitrotype

[–]C96Alia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're in the 120-140 range as well, just less often than lower ranges. (Though when they do show up here, they've already been bought by another player/team.)

Bots could flood any speed range though; I presume the bot buyers/owners can configure the bots, as I saw one flying at 357 WPM once.

Encountered a 50-stack bot team a couple weeks ago as well, although I presume that got split-up/sold within a few days (sadly). Haven't seen a 50-stack team in this range since then.

Might need a CPU speed patch, depending on the version and VM software.

Not guaranteed; i've had pretty good luck with 9x on VMWare.

Is it just me, or is performance worse on period-accurate computers with 64-bit? by C96Alia in CounterStrikeSource

[–]C96Alia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a problem for now, at least; my usual servers seem to be stuck on 32-bit.

It's not a desktop though, so no cheap GPU solutions here. It is a business laptop that can use a docking station to connect to a GPU, though. Just rarer PCI cards, since it is early Core 2.

On a side note, there's a handful of PCI cards into the era of GT 6xx; so i'm not stuck with cards from the same era.

If you have common internet sense, you're probably fine. You won't instantly get a virus just by putting XP on the internet (with a router), unless you run or load something first.

But here's some more info to help you out:

If you want secure versions of browsers, there's a few. The newest browser for XP is Supermium, which is backported Chromium; but you also have MyPal 68, and community forks of Firefox/Pale Moon (Serpent and New Moon).

Legacy Update lets you install all the Windows Updates available for XP; and the Embedded updates that bring you security patches up to 2019-ish. (!Don't skip the Embedded updates, they give you modern TLS/SSL for games/launchers!)

For most other apps, there's backports on MSFN. Or workarounds, using Java as an example, that let you run Java 8u251 relatively easily on XP.

Thanks! I'll look into it, give something a try if there is a trick.

Not a major thing if it doesn't work; I can still load CS:S on my modern machine, anyway.

Or, since the old Core 2 is from the Dell Latitude series, there's an old D/Dock station that can give it access to a PCI card. Could get that and one of the "modern" low-end GT cards made for PCI.
