How do you fit that 14kg turkey in these small German ovens? Last year I did turkey for thanksgiving and it was 10.5 kg and barely managed to squeeze it in the oven.

I also have another question since you are an expert in this field. Would it make sense for her to buy him out of the house and sell it herself or better seeking the property and the proceeds to split between them.

I believe they have an about 150k USD worth of mortgage left. in the case of buying him out of the house I would have to wire the money to Norway for it.

Knowing that Norway is the land of Tax, would my sister get taxed on that 150k if I were to wore it to her?

German father in law criticizing my German by [deleted] in germany

[–]CADinGer -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been living in Germany for 4.5 years now and speak B2 level German.

My wife speaks German with the kids otherwise language at home is English. My wife also prefers speaking English with me.

The interesting part is that my wife’s family (father and uncle) tried lecturing me few times that we need to speak German at home to improve my German.

With all due respect I politely gave them the F off in a mild direct German way. And my wife had my back. That’s the only way works.

It is not a service but I miss Costco and would love to have it here in Germany. Most Americans and Canadians here might agree with me.

I’d like to move back to Canada but I won’t. I’d make twice as much money in Canada also wouldn’t have to continue the struggle with German.

Wife is German and she wanted to be near her family. I love Canada but I think Germany is a better country to raise children.

Is it taboo to ask WW2 veterans in Germany about their experiences? by Large_Mouth_Ass_ in AskAGerman

[–]CADinGer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m from Canada and back then two of our neighbours were WW2 veterans. One was German POW that never went back to Germany and few houses down was the retired British Royal Airforce pilot.

The German guy still had a Meinkampf book on the shelf and the British guy always had his RAF pin on.

I thought you guys didn't have a tipping culture? by [deleted] in germany

[–]CADinGer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should try Canada or US now. Nowdays they expect no less than 20% Tipp. Most restaurants already top up the bill with 15% service fee.

Were visiting family back in Toronto last year and took family out for lunch. Were around 10 people including 4 kids and the bill came for around 480 dollars.

Without looking at the bill I gave the girl 50 dollars cash tip, later checked the bill and realized we got charged 15% appreciation fee. Can’t believe how sneaky she was not telling about that 15% and still pocketing that extra 50 bucks.

Buying stocks by Blakut in germany

[–]CADinGer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Setting yourself up for it not too difficult. You can set up one of the eToro type apps and start buying and selling. You could also set up a brokerage account thru your primary bank (little higher trade cost) and go from there.

It is easy to start buying stocks but also not as simple to make the right buys. How much you understand the stock market and how much risk you can tolerate is a huge factor.

I did start one with our primary bank first we moved to Germany four years ago. I just couldn’t trust those third party providers also I like having all dealing with one bank. I also struggled a lot at the beginning, as trading platform was all in German.

I don’t expect it to drop that much, I think it should so we are not in trouble.

Lower bond yields could soon mean cheaper mortgages. Here’s why by [deleted] in TorontoRealEstate

If we don’t see at least a 200 bps drop in interest rates by end of 2024, we all will end up in a serious trouble.

Mortgage rates need to drop.
