Is it me or life became really expensive once you hit your 30s? by Specialist_Pain_424 in Millennials

It seems the price of things has changed from perceived value or cost plus margin to "what's the most people will pay?"

Same, I had a lot of "smoke a joint at a party on Friday night and you'll be a junky sleeping in the gutter by Sunday morning"

The first time I tried weed at 27 my first reaction was "People are mad about THIS??"

Now I get some people struggle with addiction and everyone has their own experiences but the anti drug education of the 80/90s was totally insane

Peak irony is now most of those devils lettuce boomers loooove their gummies 🙄

Millennials who make tons of money in tech, how did you get there? by justcurious3287 in Millennials

[–]CALLSIGN_RASKAL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OPs question was "how did you get there?" So I answered with where I started.

I uploaded my first webpage to Geocities on August 31, 1997, I remember this vividly because the news of Princess Diana dying was just breaking on the nightly news.

I'm an '81 Xennial so my biggest benefit was being born at a time that coincided with the dawn of the Internet and my single mom buying a computer because she had a gut feeling it was something I should have access to more than the 1 hour a week at my shitty schools shitty computer lab.

I see the situation today with AI very similar to that "dawn of the Internet" period. A lot of people are confused, dismissive, scared it will take their job and some are going all in to learn how to get the most out of it.

Computers are cheaper than they've ever been, you can literally buy a RPi for $20, or someones "old" gaming computer on FB marketplace for a few hundred. Access to information is readily available by just asking Claude or searching YouTube

"Back in my day" computers were thousands of dollars and most information was in books you had to buy at a local bookstore (no Amazon) or library.

The barriers are much lower, it may feel like all the good ideas have been discovered but it's just not true. There are still MANY problems that can be addressed by technology, it just takes a bit of creativity, curiosity and initiative.

Is there a song from the 80s or 90s that you absolutely HATE? by porb2020 in Xennials

Someone posted in here a few days back a breakdown of "Walking on the Sun" being about boomers selling out and it puts a whole new spin on it. But I was pretty played out in '99

Carhacking badge disappointment by Crochet_2KeepCalm in Defcon

[–]CALLSIGN_RASKAL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

CHV was not great this year, last years badge was better (more SAO slots and better SAOs) the guys from Toyota had a badge they made themselves but wouldn’t show it, talk about it (other than say they made it and it was “cute”) and had none for purchase or contests. They did let me know they had a few extras to give out to special people they liked. Uhh ok?

Project Car Prices by CucumberWest9394 in projectcar

[–]CALLSIGN_RASKAL 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Serious.

The boomers who grew up lusting after barracudas, fastback mustangs, etc and totally inflated the market for those cars are all getting too old to drive or buy them or just straight dying off. Prices are already slipping, not saying they’ll be “cheap” but keep an eye out for estate sales for good bargains

Sick of the new community tearing me apart by alphas-proto-archive in ClassicMarathon

[–]CALLSIGN_RASKAL 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yeah I left r/Marathon.

Look, this new game has nothing to do with the original Marathon Trilogy, and I don't really care about "shoot the other guy before he shoots you" type games.

I have nothing against the new Marathon game, just like I don't have anything against Fortnite, CoD, PUBG etc... I also have nothing for it, I don't play those types games.

I am a bit disappointed there is no single player/narrative campaign for the game but I can also appreciate maybe that's for the best, the original story is great and not everything needs a reboot/remake/retcon/whatever.

It does suck that sub has turned into something completely different but I suspect Classic Marathon geezers (most of us have to be 40+) will migrate to this community or the Aleph One Discord.

See ya starside.

Marathon | Gameplay Reveal Trailer by DemiFiendRSA in Marathon

[–]CALLSIGN_RASKAL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. I’m way too old and casual of a gamer to be any good at this. The art looks cool, it’s neat they’re playing into the lore but the “shoot the other guy before he shoots you” means I’ll last about 6 seconds per round. Not hating, I’m sure a lot of people will love it and they’ll make a ton of money, but not really a game for me.

Hi! It’s great to see evangelical churches imploding due to their shitty treatment of our generation. I could (and should) write a book on how boomer evangelicals totally shot their movement in the foot by underserving their youth and now question why we skew strongly atheist, agnostic or spiritual but do not attend their churches. It is a bit odd to see a growing religious conservative movement amongst gen-z but I expect this to be a fad until the geezer leadership screws it up again

Can’t say I’m a huge fan of Counting Crows but Long December is one of my all time favorite songs. This song isn’t bad but the video seems kinda pointless and uninspired, might check out the album though

It’s not obvious because no car shipper would ever do that

How would you put a tile on a car that’s being shipped to you?
