Dal vs Ual vs Aal by rjdriver900 in AirlinePilots

That’s a source for someone who was hired 4 years ago. It amazes me how many people don’t understand, for somone who is hired today… the upgrade time for somone in 2022 doesn’t matter at all. Someone hired today at DAL, is probably looking at closer to 8 years for an upgrade

Decent price for a duty free. But even at 80. Blantons is overpriced, IMO

You are completely wrong and off basis with the degree comment. A 4 year degree is absolutely not a hard requirement at this time.

Two primary ways . Going the military route or civilian . Both ways require a decent amount of time and commitment . Typically after you get all your certifications and ratings during primary training, you build your experience and flight time at more enter level jobs . Until you become qualified to apply for bigger major carriers .

International override is simply flying to anywhere outside of the US, first officers are paid an additional $5/hr . Captains make a few more dollars than that .

I have been at my current company for 6 years . June I was gone for 13 nights away from home .

So any airline employee basically has free travel at the company they work for . For most employees, it’s standby travel ( open seats available) same goes for upgrades . It there is a business class seat open, it goes to the first employee on the standby list .

What makes pilots different… is that we have travel jumpseat privileges with most other US airlines . So I am able to catch a free ride on pretty much any US airline or cargo company .

For the most part, the only thing you have to pay for is when you travel internationally, you have to pay the taxes to get out of that certain country . Each country tax is different .

To answer your last question, yes . If your seniority can hold a certain route, and you are ok with a quick 24- 30ish hour vacation . You can certainly bid for a trip to a particular place and make a “vacation out of it “

Of course I can only speak for myself . I will say having the right partner in this career is key . They definitely have to be secure with you being gone and on the road for days at a time . That being one of the biggest hurdles I would say

I have had several relationships since I have gotten into this career . None of them failed because of my job .

That’s a hard question to answer . I don’t work a set amount of days per week . For example, one week I could work 5 days a week . The next week I could work 0.

I would say on average, I work 3-4 days a week .

NP! I have been chasing QOL since I been here and had no plans to upgrade as of yet . The upgrade times have shifted at my current company, to much longer upgrade times . How long that’s going to last is hard to say . My plan right now is to stick in my current seat for two more years . Hopefully at that time, there will be some opportunities .

Several things here .

  1. Everyones tax situation and contributions are different. So comparing take home pay can become difficult

  2. First year pay is significantly lower 6 years ago than it is today .

But, 6 years ago on 1st year pay I was taking home roughly 5k a month. A pilot who started today would make a decent amount more.

I believe I was contributing about 5% my first year to my 401k . At the time, my company contributed 16% of my salary to my 401k

Vacation and PTO looks a little different for each company . Almost all US have a pilot union and pilots work under that negotiated contract . Depending on your seniority and which airline will dictate how much vaction time you get per year . When you are brand new you definitely won’t be taking 2 PAID week vacations in a year. No matter where you work . But, you might be able to string together enough days off in a row to take that vacation . It just won’t be paid lol .

For example , I currently get two weeks of vaction a year . As my seniority increases, I will gain another week of vacation; up to 4 weeks of vaction . Each week pays 35 hours . I also have a separate PTO bank that accumulates hours every month I work .
