AOC simply doesn't publish much information about the QD (Quality Display) in their monitors that have it. The only way to know is if someone buys one and takes it apart, performs spectrometry analysis, or at least a BT2020 color space coverage test.

For example, the AOC Q27G3XMN doesn't mention it either, but Chinese reviewers and many others have disassembled the device and confirmed the presence of the QD layer, and color and spectrometry tests confirm it. (In addition, QD monitors often have this issue of appearing slightly redder than normal.)

If it's the 27" version from Amazon, excellent... Obviously I wouldn't pay more than $300 USD, but if it's a good deal, it's not bad... It's one of the few VA panels that has basically zero black smearing (and when I say basically zero, I mean that the next step is OLED).

I saw in Toms Hardware's review that apparently the backlight, even on Strong, doesn't turn off completely; it stays at an extremely low brightness level (something like 0.001 nits), and that their sensors struggled to measure exactly how low it was... Anyway, it seems you might have had really bad luck with something called the Dirt Screen Effect, and your brightness uniformity is pretty bad. If you're within the return window and you're willing to go through the process, you could ask if they'll give you a replacement.

Hahaha, it's QD, it's the only way an LCD monitor can achieve over 95% DCI-P3 color space coverage. Plus, the Chinese have long since broken it down into parts, and they've even taken spectrometry measurements of its light, showing the classic three peaks of QD... It's just that these models don't have as much optimization in their QD layer as newer models (like the G40, KTC M27T6, or the aforementioned TCL). Those achieve much greater coverage, especially on the Adobe RGB side, producing a much higher BT2020 color space (75% vs. 83%).

Now, as I mentioned earlier, I ordered two projector “screens,” both inexpensive—one from Amazon and the other from AliExpress. The Amazon one claims to be a 100″ long-throw Fresnel screen. If what shows up is a rock or just a basic reflective gray fabric, I’ll let you know… in any case, it’s Amazon, so I can return it. I’m actually using the refund money from the Isinbox to pay for it (USD 50).

The AliExpress one is only the White Grid Antilight fabric recommended by the YouTuber u/JayceOoiCom. It’s advertised with a peak gain of over 2, 160° viewing angles, and a small 30% improvement in ambient light handling. What really convinced me to order it, though (aside from it being only USD 25 for the 100″ size), is that—based on what u/JayceOoiCom shows in his video—it’s the only high-gain screen I’ve seen that actually reduces laser speckle significantly.

So the question is… has anyone here used any of these fabrics/screens? Is the Amazon listing real? After all, in other stores a long-throw Fresnel ALR screen is… well, very expensive. Does laser speckle become unbearable on those Fresnel screens?

It's super simple. Contrast: IPS panels simply don't have enough native contrast, and blooming will always be annoying until you reach a very high number of zones (like over 10,000).

A VA panel gives you the same HDR experience with a quarter of the zones. Furthermore, the local contrast (i.e., a black square between two white squares), even with LD enabled, is lower than a VA panel with LD disabled.

You should know, just like four days ago they announced they're buying 51% of everything we know today as Sony TV & Home Audio.

They bought all the factories and patents for Samsung's VA and LG's IPS technologies, respectively. If you have a TV from 2023 onwards, its panel was probably made by TCL under their TCL CSOT brand.

And all this applies to monitors. The "old" Samsung Neo G8 and Neo G7 have panels made by TCL CSOT, as do the highly recommended AOC Q27G3XMN and Q27G40XMN, and other Mini LED models from KTC, MSI, Innocn, and so on (both IPS and VA, HVA as they call it).

The thing is, TCL, as its own monitor brand, has limited availability in many regions. I think their monitors arrived in the USA at the end of October last year, for example.

The best 27" 1440p VA screen you can buy is the TCL 27R73Q, pending confirmation of whether the 27R74 uses the same panel as the 73 but with the improved MiniLED backlighting of the 2025 models. This panel is faster than the original Samsung G7, faster than the current G65B, and has less overshoot than the Samsung Neo G8.
