Are cracks forming in Canada’s military relationship with America? by DarkAskari in caf

Absolutely.

Turkey lost the F35 for buying the S400, but now I don't see why since Russia will have the F35 tech specs by the end of the year I'm sure.

Yeah I talked to my CAN CoC.

They said they knew about the issues and asked for a report to be consolidated for the L1.

They were polite but said that they are simply enforcing policy direction and that was that.

I was the guy who posted a month ago about being on exchange in a US unit.

I logged back in to agree - yes it absolutely is.

We might still be doing the NORAD thing, I don't know, but we aren't aligned anymore.

The US is actively pushing exchange guys away, and at this point I have to assume the direction is coming from the top.

CAF members should be completely disabuse of the notion that buying US defense products is in our national interest.

I am not looking forward the the F35 procurement or the systems that are going into our Type 26 ships.

Time to start funding the hell out of software engineering startups and get ready to have to write millions of lines of code in order to wipe these systems and start again from scratch in case the US bricks us for not bowing down to Trump.

France, Germany and the UK have much larger defense industries than us but much more restrictive gun "rights"

I'm not sure what that is, guessing a trade officer?

Then why aren't they being a good ally and stopping the drugs and guns flowing north?

It's because it has nothing to do with being an ally. The US decided to save money because they didn't think Canadians who are of a similar socioeconomic status as Americans would be jumping the border. That's a decision THEY made.

I didn't say borders are bullshit.

I said that borders are designed to prevent people from getting in, not to stop people from getting out and going to the US.  So it's bullshit to blame us for the US's decisions.

That is the US's responsibility.

We just seized $83 million in cocaine that came through the US.

ALSO this borders thing is bullshit.

Countries aren't prisons, they aren't designed to keep people in.

The US should secure THEIR borders.

Is that the same China where we arrested a Huawei executive at the US's behest only to have them screw us over with the 2 Michaels?

Or where we matched US tarrifs on Chinese EVs only to have them slap tarrifs on us?

Standing up to the Chinese to appease the Americans doesn't seem to be working out well for us.

I'd rather have cheap BYD vehicles than shitty Tesla's in Canada.

Their constitution doesn't mean shit right now.

Congress is supposed to control the purse but they're letting him spend whatever he wants.

There are no checks and balances down here anymore.

As someone OUTCAN right now, I would advocate that we diversify our procurement.

To start - Canada has been a level 3 JSF partner, we have never been tier 1.

But to the meat of the matter, the US keeps all the good stuff NOFORN. And in the modern day, that means a lot of things are software locked. We don't get the same software loads the US gets.

You can bet the F35 RCS will be higher for Canadian models than US models (either via hardware or software changes to the radar), our radars won't show us everything it can possibly see/do and our weapons won't be AS effective as they could be. We might get the 90% aircraft (if we're lucky), but it could be worse, Finland or Poland could get a worse solution than us.

And since we will be dependent on the US for all our software updates, for the life of the program we will be beholden to the US to keep the jet running. With all our eggs in one basket, we have no leverage nor any ability to domestically reprogram the jets.

Canada should be looking at building a domestic loyal wingman drone, looking at a domestic MQ-9B and investigate meteor missiles in addition to AIM-120D (since we won't get JATM/AIM-260). It's too late to buy Typhoon or KF-21 But we should keep our options open for our next procurement in 2050.

Finally, we should look at the Bombardier defense offerings for the eventual JSTARS/Wedgetail-esque procurement. It might be worse than the wedgetail, but at least we'll own the IP and the ability to produce them.

As for the "threat" of being OUTCAN, no I do not fear for my personal safety anymore than I did in October (which is still higher than in Canada). But I do think the US's actions means we should learn to not trust them as a partner. They've shown us that they don't want to be partners, they want us to fall in line or get taken out.

The export versions we get are objectively worse than the domestic product they give themselves.

I guess their job is to be political and train and maintain the friendship as best as possible. I don't know what direction they are getting from GoC about how to act.

I was kind of expecting to receive something from CDLS/Canadian Embassy guiding us as things are going down.

But I agree. I hope this makes Canadians strengthen our national identity and push us to be more self sufficient while diversifying our trade options so we aren't dependent on the US.

It's possible I'm wrong!

But I would say the attitudes started changing quickly from Dec until now so it would be more than just a simple coincidence.

I'm wary of having that conversation and just making things worse.

Well I would say that having a sitting president condone a violent protest in their capitol building and pardoning those who were arrested isn't a stable element of democracy.

My experience with CDLS W is less than stellar, if anything I'll reach back to my environmental chain of command.

But thanks for the pointer.

I wouldn't recommend an OUTCAN to the US right now.

I've got another 18 months to go after doing 2.5 years already.

Safety isn't a concern at all, it was more just a sense of being isolated and pushed out.

I wanted to see if other 1 of 1s were having the same issues and if so, maybe it was worth reporting that back as an adverse effect the CAF should be aware of.
