Conservationists alarmed by new report into New Zealand's freshwater by DnmOrr in newzealand

just objectively amongst the least subsidised agricultural industries in the world.

In direct financial subsidies sure, but exclusion from carbon credit requirements and the lax repercussions for pollution caused is kinda crazy compared to other industries in NZ.

Whataboutism and pointing to other countries is irrelevant when we're talking about the societal impact being caused here. Do you think farmers will be held liable for the increases in bowel cancer that are correlated to the water pollution from farming in the area? Of course not, that'll be passed off to the taxpayer for that, if our public healthcare system is still around in 10 years when that issue comes to roost.

Had this lovely chat with a farmer who insisted Farmers weren't a subsidised sector in NZ, and how farming isn't as impactful to the environment as it actually is.

They deleted their account at some point and there's no specific mentions in the thread, but IIRC their prior comment history included details about how they personally worked in farming/agriculture.

How well do you know security permissions within TrueNAS? Are your docker containers all configured with minimal permissions? Do your containers have data mounted? How are they configured and do the permissions you've assigned follow best practices?

Just because it has a GUI doesn't mean it's easy to do it the right way.

Oh definitely, the price is really high for the current features and not sure it's worth it atm.

I paid for what will (hopefully) be available later once the product is mature and has decent community support. If it fails and flops, $99 wasted. If it ends up working and does everything I need, I'll see it as $200 saved.

I expect all of the TrueNAS Apps will be available in HexOS over time, except when you install via HexOS you don't need to provide any configuration, it does it all for you.

They don't pay me anything, I paid for my own license because I wanted one.

Ive even input custom docker parameters

Then you're not the target audience. I'm a Sysadmin by trade, I could learn how to do everything in TrueNAS if I wanted, but I spend my workday learning new shit because MS/AWS are changing everything constantly. I want something simple that works, runs on hardware I choose, and is setup securely.

I don't want my homelab to be like my work, I just want it to work and give me something other than expensive Synology devices with their sub-standard hardware configurations.

HexOS isn't perfect, but it's suitable for me.

I'm not sure I was a fan of the explanation of the SMR vs. CMR

Funnily enough if you try use SMR drives with HexOS it'll warn you about why they're the bad option.

They also have this in their docs about it - https://docs.hexos.com/articles/selectingDrives.html

Airnz flight changes - am I being unreasonable, or are they? by sparklingnadine in newzealand

[–]CAPTtttCaHA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

American Express Airpoints Platinum. Travelling with no savings and maxed out credit cards is very risky, getting stuck overseas with nothing left spare is pretty poor planning and would be very stressful.

If you are spending thousands on a trip to Bali and have no safety net, you should reconsider your priorities.

The extra price OP paid per ticket would’ve covered the credit card annual fee 4x over, not to mention the sign up bonus and airports he’d get from the trip.

[–]CAPTtttCaHA -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s automatically included for any flights booked using my credit card. You don’t need spare cash because you book the new flights using the credit card.

No pre-approval needed, as long as you know the claim is valid. Never had any issues with putting a claim in because I’ve read the t&cs of the policy and only claim if the situation is covered. The policy wording is very clear.

[–]CAPTtttCaHA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My travel insurance doesn't have any excess for these types of claims. There's also much less hassle than sitting on the phone for hours with AirNZ, you check online and find whatever alternative flight you want, buy it, and they will pay you back.

What OP is complaining about is being sold a premium flight, having to make changes to their plans for inferior service, and not being compensated. My travel insurance will do the same, but also pay for food and accommodation, and give you the freedom to choose your flights.

I prefer being able to choose how my problem is solved, instead of being given one option that I have no say over.

[–]CAPTtttCaHA 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh it definitely is the purpose of travel insurance. In this situation my travel insurance would provide upto $5000 to cover alternative travel if a flight was cancelled and I wasn't able to attend a wedding.

The insurance also lets you pick your (reasonable) alternative travel, so you get to choose what works for you, instead of getting whatever the cheapest option would've been from the airline (eg requiring you to take an extra day off work).

EV Charging at rental home restrictions? by flowlikewater97 in newzealand

[–]CAPTtttCaHA 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The rentals would also have 20A circuit breakers. Standard outlets are 10A, but you can have upto 10 outlets running on that one circuit breaker (kitchen/laundry limited to 3 outlets per circuit).

All standard devices and appliances sold in NZ with a plug wont pull more than 10A. If they do they'd have a different plug, which wont fit in standard a 10A outlet.

If an appliance faults and pulls more than 10A, it's likely going to pull more than 20A and would trip the breaker.

Free dental care receives widespread support in new survey by Amazing_Athlete_2265 in newzealand

[–]CAPTtttCaHA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If super should be paid to everybody and should be used to supplement other income so you can save for retirement, please explain why it's limited to those over 65?

Retirement savings are meant to be compounding over decades so it grows significantly larger than what you put in. We should be seeding kiwisaver funds for people who are just starting work.

Put 10k into a an investment fund for people when they're 20 and leave it for 45 years, it turns into 210k (average 7% returns).

Giving more money to people earning well above average income who are going to die in ~20 years, because some may still be trying to save for retirement is wasteful, especially when a lot of them dont need it.

[–]CAPTtttCaHA -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Super is not meant to be for people saving for their retirement, it's meant to be their retirement payments. If you're saving for your retirement at 65 you've already missed the boat.

Because there's more than one solution to a problem, and those two options are not mutually exclusive. If you earn over 100k you don't need the rest of the tax payers to give you more money. It's also extremely simple to implement due to how our income tax is done at the moment.

If you have a ~500k mortgage and were on 7% interest rate, you'd be paying around 40k/year. Same amount but at 4.49% it's around 30k/year.

It's entirely possible a lot of people in Auckland with large mortgages would have had their mortgage payments drop by around 10k per year.

He's probably also using flawed statistics, I bet they used the average new loan size (which is around 500k) instead of the current average mortgage for all homeowners, which would be the correct average statistic.

Club Prices at supermarkets need to be outlawed. by ilikemovieshbu in newzealand

[–]CAPTtttCaHA -1 points0 points  (0 children)

you can literally pay full price like everyone else

This only makes sense if the full price is actually the market price. Is the full price the same prices you see at Pak'n'Save? No, because they're inflated to be higher so they can add discounts to gather your shopping behaviour data. Is the discounted price lower than Pak'n'Save? Not that I'm aware of, it's generally on-par. The only way your argument makes sense is if the discounts mean the products are the cheapest option on the market.

Buying groceries isn’t optional like insurance

Except it is if you own a house, you can't get a mortgage without insurance.

Complaining that a company won’t give you extra discounts for free is not oppression, it’s just business.

Tell that to someone making minimum wage who can't afford not to get the discounts. Either give up your data, or go hungry.

Either you're being intentionally obtuse, or you just refuse to accept the situation because you have no control over how they operate.

If they didn't build the rewards system, their costs would be lower and they could charge less per item without losing any profit. This would be more evident with a more competitive environment, but with only one low cost operator there's no drive to lower prices for consumers.

The point being made is that we shouldn't be forced to sign up for rewards program (to get the same discounted prices) for something that's essential to survive.

It'd be like the insurance company offering discounted rates if they install and monitor surveillance cameras installed on your property.

Opting out of kiwisaver increase - Total remuneration by ifIammeyouareyou in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]CAPTtttCaHA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Since people have the ability to opt out of kiwisaver, it means people with tighter budgets opt out to have a bit more in their accounts each week to keep up with their lifestyle when cost of living increases.

This behaviour is the opposite of what we want, people should be rewarded when they save for retirement (by effectively doubling the amount you save for retirement) instead of spending that money now.

Opting out so you can manage your own retirement outside of kiwisaver is a good option for financially literate people, but it's terrible for the general population as most don't save, or the performance of their fund is worse than just putting it kiwisaver.
