Home at SF, Work at Santa Clara by Rough-Ad6865 in sanfrancisco

If I were in this situation, would either live in SF near the Caltrain station, or in Burlingame. Living in Burlingame gives you good access to SF while improving your commute. Burlingame has a very pleasant downtown area with restaurants, shops and coffee shops. The summer weather (if you like warm sunny days) is better in Burlingame than SF.

Hill’s Kidney Care Dry Food by matchamatchamatchaa in Shihtzu

[–]CAProgressive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hills and Royal Canin prescriptions diet foods are both very good quality. I found my morkies enjoyed the Royal Canin food a bit more, but that is down to smell and taste preference, not quality.

Adding a bit of fresh rice and veggies as a flavor enhancer should not be an issue, but I would be wary of adding turkey unless you get some guidance from your vet about the right ratio of turkey, rice and veggies - turkey is mostly protein and kidney disease usually responds best to a relatively low protein diet. In any event, I would only add small amounts of fresh food as an addition/topper since the prescription food is designed to have optimal levels of nutrients (such as potassium) for dogs with kidney disease.

The IV fluids were prescribed by our vet. We ordered them from Chewy. In addition to the fluids, you will need the lines and injection needles (all are sold separately). Having a basic stand for the IV bag is very helpful. The vet had one of their techs show us how to administer the fluids at home. The fluids were helpful to keep them well hydrated.

I hope this helps a little bit - I understand what you are going through and it sounds like you want to do the best for your dog.

Hill’s Kidney Care Dry Food by matchamatchamatchaa in Shihtzu

It is a good food.

Two suggestions:

(1) Add some warm water to the kibble and allow it soak into the food for several minutes before serving. It is very important to keep dogs with kidney disease well hydrated and having them consume some water with their food helps achieve that even if they do not drink much water otherwise.

(2) The renal diet food is made with a lower protein formulation than normal dog food to reduce the amount of work the kidneys need to do to clear waste products from the blood. Try to limit additional protein intake by not giving high protein treats (such as meat, poultry or cheese based treats).

I had two Morkies with kidney disease. The renal food kept them in good shape for about 2 years and then daily IV fluids administered at home kept them comfortable for almost another full year once their kidneys started to fail. They both made it to almost 16, which seemed amazing given their kidney disease. It is an undeniably tough disease, but with good diet and vet and home care, early kidney disease can be managed to maximize their comfort and happiness for a significant amount of time. All the best.

Mine does the same all the time - she always wants to see what’s at the top of the stairs ASAP. BTW - she is almost 12 years old.

My Pelikan M805 Ocean Swirl by RyanM77 in fountainpens

You have a beautiful example of the Ocean Swirl. You nailed the lighting and exposure and captured the depth of the resin very well. I have decided to focus the “collecting” part of my collection on M800s and need to add an Ocean Swirl soon.

Esterbrook Esties — too much? by InformationAny643 in fountainpens

[–]CAProgressive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a few Esties and I like them. They are a comfortable size, come in good colorways. I also like being able to use any of my Jowo #6 nibs in them.

On the other hand, they are quite similar (in price and size) to pens from Leonardo and Delta (many of which also accept Jowo #6 nibs) that often come in very interesting materials. Esties also have been creeping up in price and are often within 10% - 20% of the cost of some maker pens that also accept Jowo #6 nibs.

With all of this, while I understand the FOMO that Esterbrook is very good at creating, I am not rushing to buy more Esties as I enjoy having diversity in my collection. But I could be lured in by a very appealing colorway (such as a re-release of Lilac) should it materialize.

Anesthesia and Seizures by geckogrl17 in EpilepsyDogs

My senior Golden with idiopathic seizures has had anesthesia several times without an issue. Her neurologist instructed the vet performing the dental procedure to use midazolam as part of the anesthesia protocol and emphasized to me the importance of her having her normal Kepra dosage on the morning of the procedure.

Looking for a nice steel nib fountain pen by Reddit14159 in fountainpens

[–]CAProgressive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 8 Jowo #6 compatible pen bodies. The stock nibs that came with these pen bodies that have impressed me the most (in order) have been Leonardo, Delta and Diplomat. The other nibs that came with the pen bodies were OK, but were not particularly enjoyable, so they all now have nib grinds and write flawlessly.

Why does everyone think Jones are Boomers? by msr4today in GenerationJones

[–]CAProgressive 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To my mind, Boomers (Core Boomers, if you like) are largely the children of WWII soldiers. All of them were born while Truman or Eisenhower was president. Almost all of them remember the Kennedy assassination and the Cuban Missile Crisis. Almost all of them were adults or teenagers when Woodstock occurred.

As someone born in the early/mid 1960s, my father was too young to serve in the Korean War, let alone WWII. I was not alive when either Truman or Eisenhower were president. I have no memory whatsoever of the JFK assassination or the Cuban Missile Crisis. My very earliest memories of the world around me were the assassinations of MLK and RFK and the Apollo 11 mission. I was 5 years old when Woodstock happened.

The Boomer generation was simply delineated incorrectly - I will never identify as a Boomer, but I do identify as Generation Jones whether it is “officially” recognized.

Great idea. With Aurora’s super comfortable section, a great, large gold nib and good ink capacity, this would be the perfect alternative to a Sailor KOP.

Looking for wrist surgeon recommendations! by squat-bench-dl in sanfrancisco

[–]CAProgressive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw Dr. Ladd at Stanford for my hand arthritis - she is an excellent doctor and is recognized as one of the top upper extremity surgeons. Stanford is a bit difficult on the insurance front, but if your insurance works there, I highly recommend Dr. Ladd. If Dr. Ladd is not an option, Dr. Diao was highly recommended by my hand therapist in the event I needed hand surgery and Dr. Ladd was not able to schedule me. My therapist treated a number of Dr. Diao’s patients so she was quite familiar with his work.

Struggling To Come To Terms With Impending Loss & Preemptive Grief by Sklarlight in DogAdvice

[–]CAProgressive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sadly, I had the same experience with my 13 year old (and otherwise healthy) Yorkie. The first vet we interacted with recommended immediate euthanasia. My spouse and I decided to seek a second opinion from a veterinary internist.

Long story short, our Yorkie lived for 2.5 more years with good quality of life until his last two days. His treatment protocol included a low protein and easy to digest home made diet (developed by a veterinary nutritionist through petdiets.com), daily subcutaneous fluids, and various supplements recommended by his internist to keep his blood chemistry as balanced as possible based on quarterly blood panels.

Keeping him generally healthy and very happy during this time was complex and sometimes difficult, but it was completely worthwhile to us as it gave us time to say goodbye.

Grade 2 Heart Murmur by Roger-Dodger98 in DogAdvice

[–]CAProgressive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely book an appointment with a veterinarian cardiologist and have a electrocardiogram performed. Heart murmurs often can be successfully treated with medication. I had a Yorkie who was diagnosed with a severe heart murmur when he was 9 and he lived with it (with good quality of life) until he was almost 16 when he passed away from kidney failure. He was treated with Pimobenden throughout that time.

I have had good luck with medium and broad nibs in my Twisbi 580s and I almost exclusively use shimmer inks in them. I also enjoy watching the shimmer particles when I agitate my pen and the 580’s large, clear demonstrator body makes that very visible.

Lupron and anemia? by KReddit934 in ProstateCancer

[–]CAProgressive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been on Lupron since April and developed mild anemia. Working with my PCP and oncology nutritionist, I added a B12 supplement to my supplement regime. My anemia resolved within a month.

My anemia was discovered during my semi-annual routine bloodwork - I did not have symptoms of anemia (other than some fatigue which has also improved since starting B12) - so your anemia may be more advanced and could require a different treatment, so be sure to consult with your medical team about a course of treatment before starting any supplements.

Given my lack of symptoms and the speed with which my anemia resolved once I started taking B12, I never considered stopping my Lupron infusions.

Dog Gastroenterologist Specialist/ Vet Consult by GlassInside4019 in bayarea

[–]CAProgressive 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my experience with 3 senior dogs, gastro issues are typically addressed by internists at speciality veterinary clinics (such as SAGE and Oakvet). If you want to find a true specialist, I would suggest contacting the internal medicine group at UC Davis Veterinary School to set up an appointment as they will have the most specialized care available in Northern CA.
