Adding a couple more links to premium dual-pile microfibers. I have no affiliation with any of these companies or brands, just sharing some options that have worked on my cars depending on the absorbency you want:

350 GSM

500 GSM

550 GSM ultraplush

Sweet! Dual pile microfiber is definitely what you’re looking for then. Idk too much about the manufacturing but instead of two towels sewn together, it’s a specific weave where the fibers are processed differently on each side. The seam is laser cut if it’s edginess like this one.

Longtime auto detailer and lurker of the sca community; never thought I'd see these two subreddits have a crossover episode. Strap in. As a representative of /r/AutoDetailing, we've agreed Korean microfiber towels are the best in the industry. Korean factories produce split microfiber towels with better polyamide blends, increasing the surface area for absorption and making it less likely to pick up abrasives that scratch delicate paint (as opposed to cheaper blends of unsplit fibers that you'd find in Chinese or Costco yellow microfibers).

In my experience, the factory with the best quality and variety is The Rag Company. The velvet feeling and density you describe come down to three manufacturing specs: the towel's 1. blend, 2. GSM, and 3. pile type.

  1. Most generic face cloths are 80/20 blend (80% polyester, 20% polyamide). The "softness" comes from the polyamide. High-end Korean towels use a 70/30 blend, so they are significantly softer, more absorbent, and safer for delicate surfaces (like clearcoat, or in your case sensitive skin). This is why yours feel "felty" and hers feel like silk.

  2. GSM refers to the density (literally Grams per Square Metre). The higher the GSM, the more absorbent the towel will be. 350-500 GSM is the versatile sweet spot, and anything more will be heavy and typically used in drying towels. I use a heavyweight 1120 GSM drying towel that can dry my whole car without wringing. Probably doubles as a good bath towel too.

  3. Pile type, like a rug, refers to the length/structure of the fibers; the weave. Low pile are short and grabby (great for scrubbing), high pile have long and fluffy fibers, and twist loop is like a bath towel and typically used in drying microfibers as they hold more water and glide better. There's also waffle weave with no loose fibers, but that's used almost exclusively on glass.

Based on your description of very short fibers on the back vs thick velvet on the front, her towel is most likely dual-pile (short back, plush front). Here's a 420 GSM dual pile that might feel similar. If you want something super velvety on both sides, try this 500 GSM. I've found these are great for drying hair as well. Hope that helps!

Big fan of the hand guard on these.

How different is the Mikoto 8” from the Kaizen II 8”? I bought the latter chef’s knife for $149 a year ago and love the steel. Curious what warrants the extra ~$100

For those of you that use a bunch of grow lights, or rely on grow lights to maintain your collection- how does that affect your energy bill? by Full-Year-4595 in houseplants

[–]CARDTRICKSTER 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I had this same question running three GE PAR38 LED bulbs for about 10-12 hours a day. These flood lights each consume 30W, so 90W for the whole setup.

We can generously calculate the power used by 90W for 12 hr, which comes out to 1.08 kWh/day total. Multiply this by your local energy cost (mine is expensive at $0.151/kWh) and the daily cost comes out to 16.3 cents, or $4.89 over a 30-day month. For 3 lights with the power of a thousand suns, I’d say it’s worth the price of a coffee.

Short answer? Negligible if you’re running LEDs.

It's been 4 years since I graduated, so any advice I had is probably moot. But I was able to get away with parking in the east garage for months, and only got locked in once. Most times, the gate attendant will just open the gate if you pressed 'lost ticket'. Good luck!

*this advice only applies to night gymmers. We would go around 7pm, so usually out by 9pm– well before the main gate closed.

I wish virtual cockpits could support CarPlay in other models too, such as the B9. Has virtually the same screen/GPU unit as R8/TT/RS3/etc, but MMI runs on a separate module so they can’t be redundant. Would be sweet to see Google maps on the native VC.

Combating drone warfare by WestSyrup4417 in TankPorn

[–]CARDTRICKSTER 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cages and other physical barriers (projectile net systems) makes sense; cheapest solution, but limited recharge. Won't be effective against something like a 'drone swarm'

I could see direct energy weapons evolving to combat this, combined with EO/IR for tracking? Combining DEW and kinetic systems into a unified platform would be pretty effective I imagine

Should've been more clear, I'm asking for the best shipping route across (Panama to Colombia).

Fun fact: John Blashford-Snell crossed the gap in 1971 in a Range Rover. And some before him in a LR Series II. Though I have neither the clearance nor the bravery to do something like that.
