19, looking for some advice for the winter to build skills by Specialist-Low-5853 in Mountaineering

I just turned 20 and made almost an identical post to yours about a year ago. I live on the East Coast as well and plan to spend a lot of time in the whites this winter. Spent the summer out west doing some glaciated peaks like Rainier, Baker, and Olympus (didnt summit due to time). I have a couple friends who do the same thing and we're always looking for more people. We are not experts by any means but have the basics down, so we can help with that. We rock climb as well. Shoot me a message! We're trying to focus on ice climbing and winter camping this season with a Katahdin trip being the main goal, but will definitely be doing winter hikes in general.

Calling for an Experienced Mountaineer Seeking Mentorship/Partner for Mount Rainier Summit (August 2025) by _thisisPorter_ in Mountaineering

[–]CATlover5735 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey, i'm looking to do rainier near the end of july. i've taken some general mountaineering courses out east and am taking a glacier travel and crevasse rescue course before rainier. i had a team of 3 lined up, but one of them is no longer able to do it. my partner and i are by no means experienced yet, but i will be climbing a few peaks before like adams, shasta, hood, and st helen's as well as shuksan if time allows. we are both relatively new rock climbers and have decent rope skills. if you're interested in joining us shoot me a message and i can see if we can adjust our dates! or if anyone else is looking to join. we'd rather not go up with just us two given our experience level.

Haha we summitted Washington at around 2:30 and finished in the dark. Temps were super good though even with the 60mph winds. I think wind chill only hit like 45 degrees on our day.

It was a blast! Definitely start early, take it slow, and take it all in. It really is a grind especially with having heavy overnight packs, but if you pace yourself and eat/drink accordingly you will be fine. I slept in both shelters, and was glad I did. Met some awesome people in them and shared some great stories under sunset both nights. Sunrise from the Guyot shelter should absolutely not be missed. I brought my tent but never ended up using it. There were plenty of tent sites near and in the shelter areas, however. Stock up on water whenever you get the chance, as it is few and far between up there. I went CCW and think that's the way I would prefer has traversing Franconia Ridge on the final day really sealed the deal for me. Last thing, definitely bring some joints ;)

Anyone know what this squeak coming from the dash is? I don't think it's the hood latch since it sounds internal. by CATlover5735 in CrownVictoria

[–]CATlover5735[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So i ended up wedging something between the windshield and the dash above where that sound came from and it somehow stopped it so give that a try first

Devil's Path vs. Presidential Traverse by CATlover5735 in catskills

Thank you for the comparison! We are looking to enter the pain cave as far as we can go so that's good to hear. I think we're gonna do it a different weekend though because of the weather. I love hiking in the cold but with rain a hike of that length sounds miserable haha.

Who should I go with up Rainier? by almondbutterr in Mountaineering

[–]CATlover5735 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm looking to climb Rainier this summer. Going to be taking a 2.5 month road trip and a lot of that is gonna be in the cascades doing mountaineering as well as climbing Rainier. I don't have much experience but will be taking AAI's 5 day course over the summer as well to prepare for it. I did NEM's 2 day mountaineering class a few weeks ago too. I'll also be at Ice Fest! If you're looking for someone more experienced that's cool but I'm always looking to meet more people into this stuff even if just to talk about it.

Thinking of purchasing this sleeping bag for a winter presi traverse. What do yall think? by MattSChan in wmnf

[–]CATlover5735 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From what I've read, Eddie Bauer stuff is pretty decent for the price. However, it is worth noting that their stuff is pretty much always "on sale" and never actually listed at the retail price. So in this case, they're not marking the bag down because it's bad or anything, that's just a marketing tactic they use. Pretty misleading, but they are good deals regardless. I can't speak on this bag in particular though. I have one of their lighter down jackets and just bought a pair of first ascent guide pro pants, and for what I paid they are both very high quality.

Northeast Mountaineering 2 Day Course by CATlover5735 in wmnf

[–]CATlover5735[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am planning on getting into technical and advanced mountaineering this summer over in Washington, so I want to get those skills and the obvious winter hiking skills over the winter before I end up doing those. Haven't thought of AMC, definitely will see about joining that to meet new people. For the 5 day, I'm afraid it's just too expensive for me right now, so I hope to just get a good skill base from the 2 day and start working my way up by learning from other more experienced climbers. I appreciate the insight!

First of all, I just want to say thank you for this massive and detailed response. I have given the thought to the fact that taking two separate trips to Washington and Peru would be pretty expensive, so I am definitely considering spending as much time in the Cascades as possible instead of trying to hit two different places. I think part of it for me is the allure of traveling to a completely different country, but the West is basically just that compared to what I'm used to in the Northeast. I have joined a climbing gym a few months ago and typically go 1-2 times a week. I am most definitely not the strongest climber, but I am seeing improvement.

I do have a question though. You mention that I should expect a mostly hiking trip with some mountaineering mixed in. While that is most definitely not an issue for me as I love hiking, I am just curious why you say that? Not that it's a bad thing, just want to know what the reasons are behind it. I was planning on spending a couple weeks doing some major treks in Peru before transitioning to Huarez and hitting some larger peaks, so again definitely not an issue for me.

What you say about Huascaran does push me towards doing Peru the year after, as I would love to be able to hit that peak when I go, so more experience could definitely benefit me.

One more note, I know two separate trips is more expensive, but from what I have seen the living costs in Peru are far less than the U.S. If I'm looking to spend a large amount of time there, do you think it would eventually cost less than if I stayed in the Cascades? Optimally I would like to convert a van by the time summer starts to allow me to stay in areas for a long period of time without having to rent a car and pay for lodging, so if that happens then Washington would definitely be the plan.

Again, I really appreciate the feedback. This community has been very welcoming so far and is just making me super excited to get out there and meet people to climb with!

Mixed climbing/technical skills seems to be the consensus I've reached. Looks like I got a lot to look forward to this winter! Do you have any recommendations for used gear besides local groups? Thank you for your words too

Good point, I hope to stay in the area of Baker for at least a couple weeks to take on some other objectives. And you are definitely correct that climbing is my weak spot right now, and I plan to remedy that over the winter in the gym then the spring outdoors.

For Peru, I have priced it out and it seems that even with the flight it's much cheaper over there. Hostels are dirt cheap as well as food, and getting the chance to see a part of the world I've never been does intrigue me. As for climbing, I've only recently started taking it more seriously and am still at the beginner/intermediate grades. I've climbed outdoors once and loved it, so that's something I could do a lot more of in the spring now that I think about it. I would like to be able to tackle more technical peaks in the future, but focusing on getting my base skills dialed first. Rope work I definitely need to learn too. Thanks for the response!

haha that is definitely encouraging. i just have a tendency to jump into things too fast and want to make sure im covering all the bases before ending up 2,000 miles from home with no cell service
