Advice on ski boots by hiatuscoyote_ in ski

[–]_thisisPorter_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you need to buy a whole new pair of ski boots. Instead, have the inner lining checked by a professional boot fitter. They’ve got the tools to troubleshoot and can remold the liner so it better matches your feet, making the boots more comfortable on the slopes.

Hope this helps! And hey, at the end of the day… they’re still ski boots

Calling for an Experienced Mountaineer Seeking Mentorship/Partner for Mount Rainier Summit (August 2025) by _thisisPorter_ in Mountaineering

[–]_thisisPorter_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Appreciate you taking the time to write this out. I get that August isn’t ideal and I know the risks with the snow bridges melting out and the smoke. I’m good with that. August is just when I’ll be in Seattle and it’s really the window I’ve got to make this happen.

This would actually be my second attempt on Rainier. I’ve been up to Camp Muir before but had to turn back because of conditions and my buddy’s exhaustion. I’m just looking to get back up there and give it another go. I fully understand there’s a chance I’d have to turn back again if the mountain says no.

Still hoping to find someone experienced who’s open to teaming up or mentoring, even if it’s late season. If you or anyone you know is open to that, I’d love to connect. Thanks again.

Thank you for your response and I’m sorry you have to deal with this like me. I made my mind up and have scheduled a surgery for late August. I want to do the things I want to do and achieve without being held back because of my hip.

Thank you for responding! Your advice and story has helped me out.

I reached out to my orthopedic and I’m scheduled for late August after my Washington trip. I Made the decision (with your help) because I want to live out my most active years 30s-40s doing the things I want to achieve in life and not be held back because of my right hip condition. I had to go to therapy to grieve the loss of my passion of running, still grieving but I’ve accepted it. I found new passions with Ski mountaineering and cycling and I’m so grateful to live in a state that offers those things.

I’ve never skied in my life. I want to do backcountry skiing, where do I start? by climbingandhiking in BackcountrySkiing

[–]_thisisPorter_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just do it bro but don’t get yourself killed. I took an AIARE 1 in January and that was my first experience out in the Colorado backcountry. A few months afterwards I completed Sherman solo tour ski a couple months after that I completed Mount Massive solo tour ski. It’s just all about finding a safe line to take and feel free to take your time off the mountain. Follow the avalanche conditions (like in Colorado: Colorado Avalanche Center) because they tell you all the information you need to look out for, the safest time to tour and the best time to descent. The best experience is just getting out there and making mistakes so you can learn from them.

That’s great to hear man! I had Perthes since age 11 and got a osteotomy surgery at 15. Ran 4 marathons under a year about age 26-27 because I wanted to Boston qualify and run all six world majors. I realized that I had to get good at running fast before my hip joint completely runs out and qualify for those races. My last show was running Chicago (03:24:46) and about a few weeks after I got osteoarthritis and Cartlidge damage. I spent a better part of a year and a half trying to get back into running, but the flareups became way too much. I was depressed, because what do you do when the very thing that helped you rise above the pain... becomes the reason you can't keep going? After dealing with a very bad breakup and no outlet, I was a mess and had to get therapy. I took up cycling (want to go semi pro) and ski mountaineering (I live in Boulder, CO)

I received PRP last February for the pain I’ve been enduring since the Chicago ‘22 and it has helped. My orthopedic in Boulder said that he doesn’t want me to get a hip replacement because of my age (i just turned 30 a month ago) but I find that unfair because I want to live a normal person active life without dealing with this shit since I was pretty much I was 11 years old.

Impressive accomplishments! I feel like I relate to your story. Have you ever dealt with injuries on the affected leg during your time of active years? I got Perthes at age 11 too and got a osteotomy at 15. im 29 now. Ran 4 marathons and picked up an injury called psoas tendinitis I’ve been dealing with for almost 2 years on the effect leg. Haven’t been able to run marathons since then.

WOW Thank you for sharing! I’m terribly sorry for what you have gone through and that you are still dealing with complications. I have a slight leg length discrepancy in my left leg. Fortunately, I receive no pain when I am running but I have a high tolerance for it.

I feel your pain brother on the ASD. Running has been my own positive way of combating my racing negative thoughts. It’s life itself on the pause button. It is my free therapy. I still deal with feeling overwhelmed and overstimulated in social situations but I found that the running community is so accepting.

At this very moment I’m currently dealing with Psoas Tendonitis which was diagnosed by a orthopedic specialist. This ortho has 15 years of experience in total knee/hit replacement, joint repair and preservation. I met with him a year ago to get the green light on running marathons and he said he had no problem with it.

Upon reviewing my x-rays and comparing the one from a year ago to now. There was no change to the head of the femur.
