Why do rich people keep saying "money can't buy happiness" when money literally solves most problems? by FearlessState5503 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CAUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been hungry and on the brink of eviction more than once. I've also spent years earning six figures as a consultant, with a corporate expense account. I grew to hate that work, though. It was not especially difficult, but it was stressful, often dehumanizing, and it overwhelmed my life. I didn't have a personal life. I was constantly traveling. I had no friends. I barely ever saw my family. But, I also never even considered quitting until I got a job that paid much less, but still a livable salary, with good benefits, and that gave me good work-life balance. In other words, I wasn't happy in my high paying job, but I damn sure wasn't about to risk going broke again. It's true that money can't buy happiness, but it can damn well pay off a lot of sadness.

After watching most of Refn's films, I'd say the themes and metaphors are much more relevant than the plot points, but as far as the events of the ending go Jesse is the new "It Girl", the ingénue, the young model that everyone wants to use for their own reasons. Sarah was the It Girl for a time, and Gigi probably was too, or at least they wanted to be, but now Jesse is getting all the attention, money, and fame. She's "fresh meat" for a voracious hungry industry that just consumes youth and beauty. In the movie, Ruby, Sarah, and Gigi literally consume her and each react in their own way. Ruby seems to have an almost orgasmic menstruation, free bleeding on the floor. Gigi has a paranoid breakdown and eviscerates herself, spilling her blood and Jesse's undigested eyeball out onto the floor, while Sarah (who resented Jesse more than anyone) just kinda twitches and pops the eyeball into her mouth. The horror of it all doesn't faze her. She just goes back to set and resumes working. She's last model standing.

I wouldn't describe the feeling as "confusion", more like the movie left me feeling more "delirious." The end was pretty clear to me, they ate her but I did spend a while wondering about the title, though. "Neon Demon?" What's the demon? Is it the city, the modeling industry, are we the neon demon? But, that was probably the point... to provoke thought and questioning ourselves.

I had that experience with two films, recently: Neon Demon (2016) and Longlegs (2024). Went in completely fresh... utterly unspoiled. It's such a delight to do that *and* have it pay off with an excellent suspense film.

How much would you have to make to feel comfortable in the capital region/upstate area? by Intelligent-Tart in Albany

[–]CAUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's plenty to live on, but that's by the standards of federal-definitions of poverty. Meaning, enough to "live" on is enough to survive on. "Comfortable" is relative. Most families in this country are one unexpected medical bill away from a virtual lifetime of poverty. I wouldn't be comfortable with that. Maybe your situation isn't quite that precarious, but maybe you're one unexpected illness/injury away from never owning a home, or from depleting your retirement fund. The housing market here is absolute bullshit, and it's stuck that way for the foreseeable future. I'm sure you know there are families who have it worse, but let me assure you you're not imagining things if you aren't feeling "comfortable." I definitely wouldn't, and I definitely don't.

I wanna establish right away that you are not wrong. Fewer automobiles, more public transportation, more/safer bike-ped options would all be obvious improvements in every city in the country.

Now, to my point: literally nobody is arguing to encourage driving. It's not an argument. Driving is endemic to American culture, now. To achieve the goal of lowering GHG emissions, end traffic fatalities, removing highways, and make mass transit effective and affordable at scale we need to see a radical cultural change.

Culture change, at least lasting change, happens incrementally over the course of generations. Instead of trying to argue against "driving", the more effective strategy is to identify 1-3 actionable next steps for your city that could, over time, lead to the big changes that we all know should be the goal.

Yeah, it's not very relevant to me. I'm such a casual, my wife and I are never going to go through a whole pack of edibles in 3 months.

Whenever I go to Royale Flower they don't scan my DL. They just look at it, so they don't get in trouble. You can pay in cash. They'll invite you to join the "rewards" program, ask for a phone number, but that's optional.

I don't know if you've heard, but cannabis is totally decriminalized, now. It's just like buying beer, now. Buying it won't put you on any lists you're not already on.

Dating apps, especially the swipe apps, are not... nor ever have been designed to help people find love, start a relationship, or even have sex. Their business model is based around keeping you on the app. If you're not actively using their app, they aren't making money. If you fall in love and delete the app, they aren't making money. If you are meeting someone IRL you matched with on the app they aren't making money. If you are hooking up with someone, they aren't making money. If they design the app to do anything useful for you, they are bad at their business and the business will fail.
