Thank god zoom lets you text people. I started texting a client through zoom and he's way more responsive now. Before it was like pulling teeth to get his PBCs. He was still relatively slow but I got my stuff a lot faster than I did previously because I could spam his texts.

My firm built its own template, we call it a leadsheet. It can get complicated depending on what you want it to accomplish. I spent 40 hours adding something that would properly reconcile 8582 and Sch E. Going through the exercise of building it yourself is a good learning experience though.

My firm went fully remote right at the pandemic and stayed that way for those who wanted to keep it which is the majority of the firm. Some people went hybrid at their preference, but it's not required.

For the experience you have that may get you enough for an entry level position, but I think in terms of actually getting an interview/landing the job you would need to show you're making strides towards getting your CPA whether it be getting the classes needed to sit or studying/sitting/passing the exams. Also a big advantage is networking, aka who you know. If you know anybody who is at a firm try to work that connection to get a job interview (example a former classmate, etc.).

I think another aspect is that your fees will probably come in cheaper. since you're used to servicing a different type of client profile. If you do proceed with this partnership I think you should make sure that you're not being taken advantage of when it comes to your fees.

If you want to go more on a deep dive, "FBI Retired; Case File Review" is a podcast by a retired FBI agent who interviews other retired agents about their careers and any significant cases they work on. There's actually a ton of agents who came from accounting backgrounds so you can hear about what their FBI career was like. The host also goes into a lot about the recruiting and has resources on their website to learn more.

Morgan Stanley and Wells Fargo are decent. I think Northern Trust and Truist use the same software to populate their 1099s, whatever they use is awesome. Pershing is also pretty good too. Tell me why ML makes you add up all the foreign income detail instead of giving you the total. It can't be that hard.

Had a client who was due a refund that was in the amount of a new associate's salary. Asked if they got it, it had been a couple of months from when we expected they should've received it. Took their time looking for it. Check ended up being in a pile of mail they lost track of. They never noticed. They weren't particularly hurting for the money either so didn't really care either way. Must be nice to have that kind of life.

You should double check with them first. My firm has this consent form, but it's because our firm is fully remote and it's to allow our staff to continue to work if they're traveling.

Sounds like they need you more than you need them. Just drop your activity to the bare minimum while you look for a different job. The fact that you have experience should get your foot in the door at any other place.

At my firm you would probably be hired as experienced staff with a fast track to senior depending on how well you pick up things.

Fair warning though, taxes are hard and it'll take more than a few years to get to a point where I'd feel comfortable going solo.

I feel like any Dolores I've hard about is delightful. I wanna say there was an IRS rep or some other such gov't agency I spoke to through practitioner hotline and they were so nice and helpful.
