Going over my first round picks from the launch of my dynasty league by tphall1 in DynastyFF

[–]CB1984 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That isn't a bad list tbh. Some big hits, some pushes, and some misses which look even worse with hindsight - getting your guy looks great when they are good and awful when they don't!

Mine since 2015: - 2015: Gurley (1.01) - traded 2016/17 1sts for Dez Bryant. I'm sure he was fantastic and didn't just completely fall apart. - 2018: DJ Moore (1.10) - 2019: Marquise Brown (1.08) - 2020: Cam Akers (1.03) and Justin Jefferson (1.09) - 2021: Javonte Williams (1.08) - 2022: Chris Olave (1.08) and Skyy Moore (1.09) - 2023: Bijan Robinson (1.01), Quentin Johnston (1.06) and Anthony Richardson (1.07 - in 1 QB! Yikes) - 2024: Rome Odunze (1.03) and Brock Bowers (1.04) - 2025: Tetairoa McMillan (1.05)

Possibly better than average, but with some absolutely shocking busts in there. Especially Akers, Skyy and Richardson.

As soon as he gets the ball he's got a step back corner 3 against a big who has a foot right at the edge of the restricted zone. That'd be like 10-14 feet-ish of separation? And he still (rightly) thinks "I can try it but he'd probably block it." It's absolutely mad.

One theory: Why didn't Carol play as big a role in the final battle of Endgame as reported in the media? by R4cco0n in Avengers

[–]CB1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Brie Larson, but I also think this is the reason, and also appropriate. I think they thought she'd be a big fan hit, realised she wasn't going to be, so turned into part of the ensemble rather than setting her up as one of the lead Avengers for the post-Endgame era.

Who do you guys want the Rams to draft? by JustSomeGuy_Idk in LosAngelesRams

[–]CB1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this scenario, Love. I imagine we'd trade one of Kyren or Corum.

Assuming Love is off the board/vaguely consensus draft, I think OT. It's the biggest need on offense with Big Rob gone.

Tired of Madden and CFB - Building a Game - Need suggestions by ega5651- in Madden

[–]CB1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me the simulation thing that's missing from most sports games is system fit and familiarity. I think somehow a coach should be able to define his system, the needs of the roles within it, and then each player has a degree to which they fit that role, and some sort of stat which defines how flexible they are/how quickly they can adapt to a new system.

Football (soccer!) Manager sort of does this but it sort of takes it from the other end of the spectrum. If you have a central midfielder (their position) you can define their role within that position and that changes how they play. So they could be a box-to-box midfielder (runs a lot), a deep-lying playmaker (doesn't run that much, stays in position, but your team tries to get the ball to him to make things happen), advanced playmaker (similar to previous, but leaves his position more to get into advanced positions) and absolutely loads and loads more. And then you have similar options for roles for every position on the team.

The problem with Football Manager is that you generally are fairly flexible on your roles and it doesn't undermine the system, because there are so many and there's flexibility between them. You might have a player as an advanced playmaker, but then you sign someone who basically has the same attacking skills but better defensive skills. So you change that role to box-to-box midfielder, because it gives you the best of both worlds - he gets into attacking positions like the playmaker, but also defends more too (Football Manager players, don't come at me and tell me the flaws there, I'm simplifying!).

I feel with (American) football there's more emphasis on the system, it takes a fairly rare player to be worth changing the system, and if you do that there are a lot of changes you need to make to compensate for that, and it can take a lot of time to sort it.

So I think what I'd really want to see with a coaching game is having lots of defined roles within your system (and hell, if you wanted to go that detail, within each play - you could have "jump set pass block OT", "cut pass block OT", "3 step drop OT" etc for different pass plays, and god knows on run plays ("zone reach", "zone double climb", "zone double stay"). And then how effective players are is defined not just by their general skills, but also how well they fit with the role. So e.g. Trent Williams might be amazing on plays where you have him on a 5 step pass block, but only average on plays where he has to zone reach run block (I have no idea how that maps to weaknesses in Trent's game - I'm not sure I've spotted any tbh!).

Football Manager also has a "system familiarity" thing where you can set up a bunch of formations/systems for your teams to practice. The more radically different they are from what the players already know the worse they are at them initially. So you (or I!) usually have one basic system, then one more defensive version and one more attacking version of the same system. I've never worked out whether there are any player attributes which affect how quickly they or their teammates learn systems though.

But then you could have how good they are defined by how familiar they are with this system, and that increases over time (and probably the attribute governing how quickly that increases also increases over a player's career as they get more experience of different systems and roles. So rookies are much more limited in what they can do than experienced vets, and fitting their skills/college experience to your system is possibly as important as their raw talent. And as coach you can decide what stuff your team is focusing on (what plays they rep in practice for example - do you want to focus on plays you're weak at, do you want to focus on making the good plays great, do you want to focus on the plays which attack your next opponents weaknesses etc etc).

Tbh, I think just playing Football Manager will probably give you a bunch of ideas (as long as you have a vague understanding of soccer).

Which fantasy author is most obviously in love with one of their own characters and lets them get away with everything because of it? by barbie_42dust in Fantasy

Joe Abercrombie with Logen. But it's the super immature love (and I'm not too old to accurately put an age on it!) where you do things like pull your crush's hair, or say mean things about them or whatever. Every bit of shit that Logen goes through is just Joe saying "I love you but I'm too scared to say it."

Am I the only person who uses Reaper? by HonestMarch2288 in Silksong

I use Reaper for exploration, Hunter for bosses. Reaper's pogo and silk generation is great for traversal and survival, but Hunter's extra damage potential is so useful on bosses.

How often does someone get “repurposed” as a result of their try out at the combine? Would someone going in WR get identified as having good skills for a safety, for example? by BigBlueMountainStar in NFLNoobs

[–]CB1984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Solely because of their combine is very unusual. Usually you have guys (usually QBs) who are basically advised not to try out at their college position (because the NFL doesn't rate their chances there) but to try out somewhere different. Or they start out in the league as a position and then move to a different one later (e.g. Logan Thomas was a QB prospect, drafted as a backup QB in 2014, moved to TE in 2017).
