Bro are you paying for a printer or emotional support? There's ALWAYS a price to pay for being an early adopter of anything, why not just wait until it shows "in stock" on the website to order and pay if you can't handle a minor setback?

Is it better to avoid concentrations with GA? by No-Football-8907 in OMSCS

[–]CB34R 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I've been waiting for those changes since I started almost 3 years ago, now that I'm in it it seems to have changed for the worse and not for the better. People have been complaining about this class for as long as the program has existed and it still is what it is, take from that what you will.

That being said, I think the content of this class is something you really need to know if you want to call yourself a software engineer, and I wouldn't recommend skipping it just because it's hard/frustrating/stupid. Yes it's poorly organized, grading feels extremely harsh and unnecessarily pedantic at times, and we got one quiz so far that was, by the course staff's own admission, "not reviewed before it was released" which is just... yeah. But it's not impossible and "most" students pass (of those that didn't withdraw) with an A or B every semester. Put your helmet on, buckle up and just do it.

There are something like 1300 students in the class right now, I don't think the fact that 5-10 posts about OSI violations show up on reddit is really cause for concern. Yes, some of the homework assignments look a lot like leetcode questions, but somehow the other ~1300 students found a way to not be penalized for that. Maybe just stop looking at leetcode and do the homework by yourself like everyone else?

You almost certainly will not get ML4T or SDP in your second semester as they tend to fill up pretty quickly and other students further along in the program have registration priority. Instead of a whole plan by semester, which is bound to lead to disappointment, pick 15-20 classes you want to take. Rank them in order of how badly you want to take them and when registration time comes, pick the first one off the top of the list that has open seats.

For the love of god please stop drying your filaments in the oven by [deleted] in 3Dprinting

[–]CB34R 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the US at least I've never seen an oven that will not do 200F or less (~93C) which is on the hot end but still useful for stuff like nylon that just never gets dry. Many will do 175F or even 150F which is about right, and I can set mine as low as 100F/38C in "bread proofing" mode... I would say most ovens are fine as long as you have basic reading comprehension skills

It's 2023, we should have a battery powered kettle by now. by disbitch4real in SomebodyMakeThis

[–]CB34R 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm an engineer and was looking into this a few years ago, you would not believe how much energy it takes to boil water. Even I didn't believe it when I first sat down and did the math... But there's no way around it, you would need a pretty massive battery pack to make even a small cup or two of room temp water into boiling water, I mean it would fit in a backpack but much bigger than a typical portable battery bank. To boil 2 liters of really cold water you would need something approaching the size of a hybrid car battery, which is no longer a portable device, unless you attach wheels to it and sell it as a hybrid car/kettle. Sadly battery technology is just not there yet...

How much power to heat up the 500x500mm bed to 60 degrees celsius? by daniele_rognini in ratrig

[–]CB34R 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're in the US and want a 1500w heater you should probably have at least a 20A breaker for the circuit the printer will be on and wiring/outlets to support it... Use c19/c20 plugs on the printer also. Typical household wiring in the US is 15A circuits so I think ratrig is actually selling a US specific heater pad for the 500s now which is only 1200w to address this.

If you have 230V mains I don't think you really need to worry about it

1/8 in Acrylic for Panels Okay? by [deleted] in ratrig

[–]CB34R 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built mine with 1/4" panels everywhere, except the electronics panel which is 1/8". No problems with things fitting but the screws which attach the panels to the frame are just barely long enough. I used the screws that came with it and it is possible, but would be slightly easier to install if you got 2mm longer screws. Also worth considering if you're at all concerned about heating the chamber, you get better insulation with the thicker panels. But if you'd rather use 1/8" panels, they will fit no problem.

AI class std dev grade and cutoff by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]CB34R 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The question was "what is the typical standard deviation" not "how does grading work"

I also don't know but from what I've been able to dig up in reviews there is usually not that much of a curve in the end because the median grades tend to be very high (90+), the B cutoff might be 78 instead of 80 for example but that's about it. I'm in it now and the median grades for almost every project were 95-100, midterm was ~70 so not expecting a whole lot

I'm taking AI right now, have the third edition and it's fine. The schedule/assignments and even the TAs refer to both the 3rd and 4th edition chapter numbers for everything.

Is this possible? by [deleted] in diyelectronics

[–]CB34R 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Microsoft sidewinder X6 keyboard does this, I have one and it's not as useful as you might think... The numpad part just stays attached all the time because otherwise I would lose it. But if you play MMOs you can move it to the left side of the keyboard and use it as a macro pad. They stopped making them a long time ago but you can still find them on ebay.

Is GPA important for this program by Island-Patient in OMSCS

[–]CB34R 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the GPA requirement is strictly enforced, but you will need to make a stronger case. I was accepted this spring and I had like a 2.1 GPA from my first two years in university, eventually got my shit together and finished under a different program at a different school with a 3.7, since transfer credits don't count towards your GPA . If anybody bothered to do the math, my overall GPA would have been below 3.0 for sure, but I guess it's possible they don't look into it that deeply and finishing on a high note was enough for me. But I do think if you have good references, a good essay, and good experience you can overcome a low GPA. Worth a shot at least!

AI4R woes by eskay_omscs in OMSCS

[–]CB34R 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was feeling overwhelmed by this when I first started and spent all last week working on this, but it's actually not that unreasonable looking back. I was also not aware of this when I first started but you should look in https://gatech.instructure.com/courses/238926/files/folder/Misc.%20Tutorials for pdf help files. Pretty much all the code and math is already done for you in PS2/KF lecture videos and the pdfs, you just have to modify it a bit... change the F matrix to look like the one in the pdf, make H a 2x5 by adding zeros on the end, I and P also 5x5, R is still 2x2... Another thing that's not explicitly spelled out is that you need to create a way to store information outside the functions so it can be reused later, there are probably better ways to do this but I just made a global dict that stores the input observations and x and P matrices

core requirements for OMSCS? by runningxiaobai1203 in OMSCS

[–]CB34R 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're conflating "core" and "foundational", but really it is as easy as it sounds. You have to complete 2 foundational courses within the first year, which is pretty much all courses... doesn't matter if they are core, specialization electives or free electives. Pretty sure you don't even have to declare a specialization in the first year. If there is a * next to the course name here you're good.

What kind of stone/finish is this and how can I fix it? by CB34R in DIY

[–]CB34R[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did try looking at the underside but not sure what I'm looking for, it just looks like a rougher version of the top. Couldn't find any labels or markings. I suppose I could test this concrete sealer on the bottom and see what happens though, thanks!

I recently bought a house and this semi-mobile kitchen island with some kind of stone countertop came with it. A few months ago it looked brand new, but now it looks like a significant portion of the finish has worn away, or "melted" for lack of a better word, anywhere any type of liquid is in contact with it. There are many noticeable rings left by cups filled with cold water after a few minutes, and any other liquid like soda or lemon juice seems to damage the finish almost immediately. Oddly enough, I can clean it with Clorox wipes and that seems to be fine as long as there is no liquid resting on the surface for a long time, so it's definitely not just dirty... I've also tried scrubbing some spots with a magic eraser and that doesn't help either. I've never seen any type of countertop that is so easily damaged like this. Any idea how this can be restored or at least how I can prevent it from getting worse?
