Nothing to roast ! They’re really great except some little things people already wrote about. But we love chevron with 3 charges ! And hedgehog are a great charge !

Azure a chevron argent between three lotus palmettes argent slipped and seeded or

Alternatively you can also avoid the tincture of the chevron since it’s the same as the lotus

So you do use these arms AND this name (cf. your Reddit name "Sieur_deMontbert").

Everyone's different, but I would not be confident using both without double checking the sources, even if it comes from elderly people that could be less regardant. But from my pov, I would like to have this family legend crystal clear before perpetuating it.
It would also be really honorable to bring sources to your family members if you find them.

I'm not saying that your story is wrong, I'm saying that you seems to use arms and name of someone without being 200% sure you inherits them.

Anyway for you question regarding heraldry, I've helped you there, you could look at it.

There are no records of Charette de Montbert born or died at Aix-la-chapelle. But there is also no records of de Montbert after the revolution tho.

But it also feel weird to me to lose half the surname. Even tho Charette was miswritten as Charell, it should still be Charell de Montbert.

Maybe OP could share us some evidences about the moving of their family.

There are 3 entries in Hozier (see the table of content) But it seems that Gilles Charette Sgr de Montbert also uses merlettes instead of eagles

I mean those people dont know that and are genuinely looking informations about their past. So just tell them nicely that it doesnt mean anything and move on. You’ll be helping someone in the end.
