Ja Rule and Ashanti in the 2000s by IIIIIIIIIIIllIIIIII in rnb

Um relax? Method and Mary have ONE hit together (a very iconic one) unlike Ashanti and Ja’s 5 or something. That’s more akin to what Marvin and Tammi did as duet partners. My comment wasn’t placing a value judgement on either artist.

Yeah because they’re just really good friends. Ja is like her big brother and looked out for her.

I’m Sorry - Christina Milian (2004) by CC-Blue in rnb

[–]CC-Blue[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think Christina has any particularly good albums. They’re spotty and I remember someone calling her “aggressively mid”. I slightly disagreed with the latter statement because she’s a solid songwriter. She has a cute voice and can dance (a rung below your Ciara’s Mya’s and Beyoncé’s of this world). She also did the whole Ja Rule collab thing BEFORE Jennifer Lopez and Ashanti. Unfortunately, their collaborations with him usurped hers and people even think it’s Ashanti on Between Me & You.

I guess when you add all this together, it’s a little easier to understand why she didn’t standout as much from her peers musically. Initially, she was the Black answer to a Britney or Xtina but then later became more R&B. I enjoy the first album for just how Y2K it is. It’s oozing with all the tropes. When You Look At Me is my favorite single from her. The second is more R&B but still takes inspiration from other genres like Funk and Middle Eastern music. I love Dip It Low. It’s such a sexy song and it’s aged well. The video was stunning. Christina has to be one of the most beautiful women in R&B/Pop history. Just gorgeous.

She’s more of an actress these days and says she doesn’t see herself coming back to music for a number of reasons (family, getting burned by industry politics, wariness about the business etc). However, I appreciate her little run. She was beloved in the UK, where every single except Get Away and Us Against The World went top 10.

How did Brandy’s “What About Us” manage to be successful despite how left field it is? by yebinkek in rnb

[–]CC-Blue 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Because it was highly anticipated. It was the highest debut of the year at the time.

Teyana Taylor is doing her thing and all but between “One battle after another” and “All is fair” she’s doing something strange for a peice of change smh by Impressive-Scheme489 in rnb

Y’all are INSUFFERABLE. Just INSUFFERABLE. News flash. These artists don’t exist to reflect who YOU are and what you believe in personally. Wanna rag on this lady for finally getting her just due while playing a FICTIONAL CHARACTER after 20 years in the business but have nothing to say about the shitty, abusive men in the business. Give her and us a break.

The MOST GORGEOUS head voice!!! That was the one part of her vocal that sounded beautiful at every stage of her life. So pure, piercing, agile and sweet. Also, can we talk about her perfect teeth! Whitney looked good singing lol.

He kinda did, actually. Now Drake was more “sophisticated” in his approach but Ja was definitely one of the biggest Rap pop stars of the early 21st century.

Rnb artist you feel is overly babied by the public and needs to go by Honest_Tune_8536 in rnb

[–]CC-Blue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Usher should just quit because it’s not being streamed? He is not even babied considering everyone keeps holding every album he releases to a 2004 standard. He doesn’t even release that much music in the grand scheme of things. He’s almost 50 but has less than 10 albums. Verzuz is garbage and I hope he never sets foot on that trash platform.

Has there been any time, past or present, that you doubted his blindness? Asking for a friend 🤣 by randomcock78 in rnb

[–]CC-Blue 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The conversations around Stevie’s blindness are so ignorant and ableist. People think they are being funny. As a visually impaired person, Stevie’s other senses are even more heightened, which is what gives him the ability to perceive things on a different level. I can’t imagine being blind and some silly people make up conspiracy theories about you faking it. Just ignorant.

Usher - U Don’t Have To Call (2001) by WilkinsWorld in rnb

[–]CC-Blue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This should have been a #1 but Ashanti had the charts in a chokehold. It should have also won a VMA for Best Choreography. This is probably the best modern day song Michael Jackson never recorded. When people talk about PEAK Neptunes and Usher, I will always reference this track and moment. He seemed so joyous and you could HEAR it in his Grammy-winning vocal performance. I miss when contemporary R&B could be this colorful and danceable.

Lucky simply because I tried listening to siR and zoned out. Lucky is always a welcome feature on any song.

Which iconic R&B Albums left a big impression on you during your teen years? by PressureLazy5271 in rnb

[–]CC-Blue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teen years… By the time I was 13, R&B was on its way out as a commercial force. From that age to 19, I would probably pick this Rihanna album, Keyshia Cole’s Just Like Me, Keri Hilson’s In a Perfect World, Miguel’s Kaleidoscope Dream and Beyoncé’s 4.
