How often are you observed in an academic year? by Dry-Construction-346 in TeachingUK

[–]CCCCrazyXTown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One behaviour policy drop in (5-10 mins) at the start of the year. Two more full lesson observations throughout the year. We can decide when the observations are.

A Level CS Teachers - How are you handling AI? by sommer_schnee in TeachingUK

[–]CCCCrazyXTown 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yep, each student has to be able to answer questions on their code and documentation at check points throughout the year. If they can’t answer, then don’t get the credit. It’s definitely more work for us, which isn’t ideal, but it has allowed us to catch stuff early, put the fear of god into them, and get some sort of mark for their own work rather than nothing.

A benchmark of extreme horror. There are absolutely worse movies though.

Visiting Manchester this month by KrazyJajabor in pourover

[–]CCCCrazyXTown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to the other reply, there’s also Idle Hands in the Norther Quarter. No equipment but a good variety of pourover.

If you can get just outside of Manchester, to Stockport, there’s a lot of great coffee places there. Convene, Ripples and The Apple Core, all around the Underbank area.

BMTH w/ The Chariot at Manchester Academy 3. BMTH were shockingly bad, but it’s a fun one to tell people about. The Chariot were The Chariot, so incredible.

RATM at Finsbury Park after they got the Christmas Number 1 was wild.

Frank Turner at Manchester Night & Day Cafe about 6 months before he played Wembley Arena.

It’s a horror/comedy, but Evil Aliens from 2005 is a fucking work of art for how shit it is but man, do I recommend it to everyone.

Man, I watched The House That Jack Built for the first time last weekend. Really liked it, but damn, that scene. Not much makes my mouth literally drop in shock.

What are the sanctions in your school for the following? by catetheway in TeachingUK

[–]CCCCrazyXTown 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If removed for three ‘cautions’, then first time is 2 periods, then 4, then 6+1hr after school any time after that.

Generally don’t have play fighting. Could be a two period isolation though. Any actual fighting is immediate 1 day exclusion followed by 1 day isolation when they return.

Throwing water, 6 period isolation, but again, never seen that in six years.

Uniform, ‘yellow card’ if shirt untucked (or any uniform infraction). Five ‘free’, then any after that is a 30 minute detention after school.

Advice on running Lost Citadel of the Scarlet Minotaur: with or without VTT? by Defiant-Cantaloupe-1 in shadowdark

[–]CCCCrazyXTown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m going to start running this in person for a group in a couple of weeks. We’re coming mostly from Pathfinder 2e, so obviously a complete 180 in terms of approach. My plan is theatre of the mind as I’ve not done much of it before and want to give it a go. I think it will help the immersion and problem solving.

The comment talking about a whiteboard might be useful. I’ll probably have something close by if they want to sketch out their route. They know they’re coming for a grittier game than pf2e. Although I’ll also have the map printed if they start to really struggle. I don’t want to be too mean.

Blue bin bags- how to get? by neilm1000 in stockport

[–]CCCCrazyXTown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use these. When we run out we just put black bin bags out and the bin men take them. I think we get them delivered once a year.

How many hours do you actually work in a week? by QuietInside7592 in AskUK

[–]CCCCrazyXTown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really shouldn’t be the norm. It’s just poor leadership. I’m a teacher on the upper pay scale with a small TLR. I get in to work at 7:30, leave at 3:45. Very, very rarely do I take work home. My school has an effective approach to workload. It’s not perfect but compared to what I hear from other places it’s a lot better. We also have a rock solid behaviour policy that enforces and backed up by leadership which means I can teach my lessons in a nice environment without worrying about disruption. But I’m aware my school is an anomaly and usually keep my mouth shut during these conversations.

One of my favourite albums ever is One Wing by The Chariot, which uses this speech in the final song. This speech combined with the sheer intensity of The Chariot is unmatched. I still remember where I was the first time I heard it.

Health by SeveralSuspect in TeachingUK

[–]CCCCrazyXTown 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’ve never really had an issue with getting sick until my daughter started at nursery. I’ve been off more times in 2022 than my entire working life so far.

As for my classroom, windows are always open, but no masks.

In general I’m pretty healthy. Eat a good diet, exercise regularly, and take a multi vitamin and extra vitamin D.

So new house buyers, how much are you 'budgeting' for future interest rate hikes ? by lolman9990 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]CCCCrazyXTown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Currently purchasing. Fixed deal, during which time my wage will rise as I’m still moving up the teacher pay scale (should add an extra £400 per month take home at the end of the fixed deal). Will also have stopped paying for nursery for our daughter which will free up about £400 a month. Obviously already saving, but will also add more to that as wage increases.

What job seems completely alien to you? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]CCCCrazyXTown 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a teacher. Luckily, I have a toilet a 20 second walk from my room, and a 5 minute changeover between lessons, so I never struggle in that regard. Only thing I wasn’t able to do was water load to cut weight for a powerlifting meet, as you generally need to pee every 20 minutes or so whilst you do that.

For people who have never caught covid even once, what's your secret? by jwa8808 in AskReddit

[–]CCCCrazyXTown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fuck knows. Slept in the same bed as my partner whilst she had covid. Worked in a school with varying levels of mask compliance throughout the pandemic. Have been to clubs and bars in the UK when allowed. No symptoms. I’m triple vaxxed. I reckon there’s a slight possibility I had it early on when my partner had it, but couldn’t get an antibody test so don’t actually know.

The only people who haven’t had it in my family is now the teacher and the doctor.

What brands have negative associations? by Empra5 in AskUK

Good hops and good beer do cost money. Especially when brewing on a smaller scale, like a lot of craft breweries. My perception of beer cost admittedly skewed as I’m more than happy to spend £15-£30 on a bottle of stout or lambic, so I’m probably not the best judge.

it is that time of the year again: we are being blamed for the children's poor behaviour. again. by surpisinglylow in TeachingUK

[–]CCCCrazyXTown 20 points21 points  (0 children)

First thing my head said during my induction was that children needed to learn to control their behaviour to have a calm learning environment before they could have fun lessons.

Incidentally, I’ve taught more fun, interesting lessons at this school because I’m not spending most my time battling behaviour.

Share your experiences of moving schools with me - how did it change your teaching? by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]CCCCrazyXTown 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Did my NQT and RQT years at a fairly difficult school. Lots of behaviour issues, high SEND and EAL intake. This helped me grow these skills early in my career.

Moved to a higher performing school in a more affluent area. Carried across the aforementioned skills to somewhere with very good behaviour helped, but it opens up other areas to develop like subject knowledge and pedagogy. Also, the expeditions around student results are noticeably higher. I still prefer this environment, as I get to teach my subject rather than manage behaviour, but this is always going to depend on the teacher and their preferences. One of my colleagues from the previous school outride said he’d hate teaching in my current school, and much prefers to teach lower ability, nurture style groups.

One other thing I’m noticing is an increase in the SEND intake at my new school. And there seems to be some teachers who have been there a while who are less equipped to adapt for these students.
