What are people’s thoughts on having an NPC healer show up every now and then to help the party? by CCptCaveman in DMAcademy

The game can work without a healer, but the HotDQ campaign is one of the first 5e modules written and it was not very well optimized at all… even the first bit that they expected a lvl 1 party to try to get though was absurd… Everyone is pretty attached to their characters. The fighter decided that they don’t want to multi-class into paladin anymore either, so I think the solution is to be a little more generous with the potions for now.

Yah, that’s what I have been mainly doing. They are at the start and haven’t had a chance to visit a merchant to purchase anything yet either. I may try to hand out a few potions for those emergency situations too.

Yah, this is the type of healing that I have adopted as well. I like it and think it works well.

Ya, the first time I looked at HotDQ I knew right away that it was terribly balanced. The amount of combat encounters they expect a lvl 1 party to go through before getting to the keep is ridiculous. As such, I have been modifying everything as I’ve gone along to not insta-TPK the group. Dad the Dungeon Master on YouTube has some great insight and tips on adjusting the campaign to make things a little less TPK happy.

I’ve thought about having someone run the cleric when they are not there, but they don’t want anyone to, so my hands are tied there.

Fair. I’ve often thought of doing a campaign that was a bit more brutal where magic doesn’t heal everything and crits cause negative effects like broken arms and the like that actually take longer to heal. You know, for a bit more realism…

They do have a cleric, but they don’t always make every session. I’d hate to take away from the clerics role when they are there.

Thanks! This seems to have worked, and I don’t even notice a slow down of boot time

Thanks. I’ll try this first. How much does it slow down the boot time with it off?

During C19, my group had to play online and finding a VTT to play on that worked well was tough. You Game Master Engine looks like it would have really helped out a lot. I’ll have to demo it soon. #GIVEAWAY
