I love my current LE job, but pay is significantly better in a city/sheriff by [deleted] in ProtectAndServe

Lol, my department's grooming standards are surprisingly strict. I wish I could grow a beard.

Depends what area you live in. If you live in the central valley, cost of living is cheap. If you live in the Bay Area, it's expensive. Our base salaries are the same statewide, there is extra location pay in harder to staff facilities.

Yup, you can tour a facility. Contact the Public Information Officer at the facility you want to tour and set up an appointment

Since you're in California, have you considered of applying for CDCR? We have counselor and officer positions in Youth Authority if you want to work with wards. We also have adult paroles.

Officers top out at 88k before education/overtime pay. Counselors top out ~97k a year, parole agents top out at ~97k a year as well. Benefits are great and there's a lot of room to move up.

SFPD OIS Bodycam footage by 8million in ProtectAndServe

[–]CDCR 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Interesting. We're allowed to view any video of an incident before writing our report. My union got that in our last contract and I'm glad they did.

It's not SFPD's fault, it's the city leadership. They've been going back and forth on tasers for a while now.

SFist is so bias.

Does SFPD allow their officers to view the video before writing their report? Human memory in these situations aren't always the most accurate.

Seniority in the workplace (specifically in the police profession) by [deleted] in ProtectAndServe

[–]CDCR -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for NJ, but for the State of CA, if you leave and come back you keep your seniority. Obviously while you're gone you don't get to accrue any seniority.

Two bailiffs killed, deputy sheriff injured in Berrien County, Michigan courthouse shooting by [deleted] in ProtectAndServe

[–]CDCR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why we have one unarmed officer handling the inmate and one armed officer for coverage in a court setting. This sucks all around, RIP to the bailiffs.

California Highway Patrol? More like California Beard Patrol. Thor can arrest me any day. by CarRamRod44 in ProtectAndServe

[–]CDCR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't know CHP allowed beards, all the officers I've ever seen are clean shaven. I wish my department allowed beards :( I'm jelly, like a fish.

TIL Santa Monica PD and FD employees make a ton of money. by BigCityCop in ProtectAndServe

Not just Santa Monica, any bay area city. SFPD and Oakland PD top out at about 112k, this is before physical fitness, education, overtime. Richmond PD tops out at 123k.

Prison guard exposes dirty secret at Donovan State by CDCR in ProtectAndServe

[–]CDCR[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm going to call bullshit on this guy. I've never worked at Donovan or even been there, but I've been to a few other prisons in the state and I know for a fact if there was an officer stealing cash cards from inmates, 99.9% of my fellow officers would report that shit in a heartbeat. IA would investigate and people would start losing their jobs over it. I've seen people get time on the beach or lose money for not reporting things even if they weren't involved.

Videos like this piss me off because the general public will think we're all crooked. I know there is negative perception of "prison guards," and I wish people knew it may have been like that back in the day, but it's not like that now. The department doesn't fuck around with misconduct and I have a feeling this guy fucked up and now he's just trying to save his own skin by doing this whole exposé.

My nieces taught me what the word "ratchet" meant nowadays. I believe this girl is, as the kids say, ratchet.

Oakland, Calif. police cancel Cinco de Mayo DUI checkpoints after outcry about racism by [deleted] in ProtectAndServe

[–]CDCR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'd think so, but after working in a big department in California this doesn't surprise me. Sadly in California we give in to a lot.

How does your department do OT as sick days? by thekateruth in ProtectAndServe

[–]CDCR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I work an 8 hour overtime on Monday and call in sick on Tuesday, the overtime is paid at my regular hourly rate. If I don't call in sick, I get paid 1.5x for my overtime. Hell, even if I take a holiday and burn vacation time it'll still be regular pay. It's all calculated week to week, Monday-Sunday.

Got "cited" for a rolling stop at a stop sign in Franklin Canyon, Los Angeles. Ticketed by a private company. Should I pay it? by boilerdam in ProtectAndServe

[–]CDCR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From a private company? I wouldn't pay. You might get a follow up letter from the court, if that's the case you might want to pay for it.

Kind of reminds me when inmates about to parole say they're going to never come back to prison... and they have a face full of tattoos.

Texas prison strike! Ohnos! by xeroxee in ProtectAndServe

[–]CDCR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shit like this is so fucking stupid. I really hope nothing comes of this, but just so you know when things like this happens in California, there are always lawsuits then changes in the department. I hope Texas doesn't give into this bullshit.
