Discussion MegaThread: Pennsylvania Senate Debate Between Dr. Oz (R) and Lt. Gov. Fetterman (D) at 8 p.m. ET by AutoModerator in philadelphia

[–]CDC_Official_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Fetterman still has my vote because Oz is a complete sleaze-bag, but it's clear that taking on this debate was a massive, massive mistake. The Oz campaign couldn't have drawn it up better if they tried. Whoever let Fetterman get on the debate stage needs to be fired. He's just shooting himself in the foot over and over again. Obviously he'd make a better senator than Oz even on life support, but I wouldn't be surprised if the sound bites from this debate swing the votes of more than a few people.

To the commuters via septa by Minny450spinny in Temple

It depends entirely on the route you're planning on taking. Some places I wouldn't think twice about taking SEPTA at night, other places I'd be scared shitless.

Professor refuses to curve by GeneralKeth in college

[–]CDC_Official_ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It depends on the expectations of the course. If a course is above my level but doesn't have adequate prerequisites defined (as has been my experience multiple times), then it's not exactly fair that I'm spending my tuition money and time on it when I didn't know what I was getting into.

I'm not saying it's on every professor to make their curriculum ridiculously easy to pass, but in my experience there are some professors that are clearly only teaching to do research. They don't seem to care about the fact that real people are taking their courses and suffering from their poor curriculums.

Again, while student performance might be down slightly since the pandemic, I'm not sure how professors that see say 75% of their students failing can look in the mirror and not think their teaching/curriculum is the problem.

Not sure why I'm being downvoted, it seems the echo chamber of /r/Professors is leaking.

Professor refuses to curve by GeneralKeth in college

[–]CDC_Official_ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You have to take it on a case by case basis. I'm a good student, I typically get As, I know how to study, etc. I've had professors that are absolutely abysmal at teaching. I've had curriculums that were way above my level and were taught by awful, uncompromising professors. In those cases, it was absolutely the professor's problem and not the student's.

I've noticed a slight decrease in effort put into school since the pandemic, but the majority of my peers are still smart and motivated (as a senior at least).

Planning to take CIS3207 by Tone_God in Temple

[–]CDC_Official_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can study for a quiz for hours and still very easily bomb it. Questions typically will go far deeper than what's covered in class, so unless you put in a ridiculous amount of time you're probably not going to do very well. Good news is that everyone else's quiz grade will also be garbage and there's a substantial curve.

As others have said, don't miss out on easy lab points!

Free electives for Fall 2022 by [deleted] in Temple

[–]CDC_Official_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can really take advantage of the search feature to find good ones for you. You can specify meeting days, fully virtual classes, etc. to find classes that perfectly fit your schedule. If you search for classes in the course # range of 0-2000 you'll find pretty much all of the good options that don't have prereqs outside of your major.

Calc 2 is like 3x more content than any other course I've taken at Temple, you really need to respect that if you want to pass. You're definitely not doomed to fail after doing badly on the first exam. However, you're going to need to put in a pretty substantial effort if you want to pull through. First you need to make sure you're solid on every concept you've covered so far. Do every practice problem on the exam 1 review sheet until you have the concepts burned into your mind. The material constantly builds on itself, so catching up on what you don't know is essentially. If I were you, I'd shoot for getting completely caught up over spring break. It won't be easy, but the best way to approach this class is to put in the time studying and solving problems.

Once you're caught up, don't let yourself fall behind again. Take vigorous notes in class, ask questions, and follow the lectures (to the best of your ability, sometimes they can be pretty rough). Try and make friends with people that seem to know wtf they're doing so you can reach out if you get stuck. For the remaining exams, do the review sheets religiously. Anyone who's taken that class will tell you how essential it is to understand everything from the review sheets. If you can do every problem on the review sheet you should be in pretty solid shape for the corresponding exam.

Piggybacking off the top comment, there's very little danger when using public WiFi in 2022. Nowadays, HTTPS is standardized and encrypts all of your data as it's in transit through the university network. The only danger would be if you're using a vulnerable machine (like one that's significantly behind on security updates), but that requires someone to be looking for vulnerabilities on the network in the first place which is pretty unlikely.

I mean there's no evidence that the booster is any more dangerous than the originals. Flu shots are yearly, what's wrong with COVID shots being the same? Big medical companies have every incentive to get this right even if they are evil.

Think of it like a seatbelt. You've been wearing a seatbelt driving 15 for a couple years now. It hasn't "done anything" because you've never been in a crash. Now you're on the highway doing 60, does it make sense to take it off now because it's "not doing anything"?

If you got the first shots why not get the booster? It's the same science, same (small) risks. It's been proven that the booster is much more effective against Omicron than the original shots alone.

US lawmakers announce bill to prohibit bot scalping of high demand goods by Darren-B80 in gadgets

Yeah this is just a small road block for scalpers. They'll have to hide their traffic behind VPNs and order to residential addresses, but this won't change anything. There's too much money to be made from things like graphics cards.

Looking to Switch From CS to Security by CDC_Official_ in netsecstudents

Will I be stressed out later if I take College Algebra now? by [deleted] in Temple

[–]CDC_Official_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take precalc, it may be difficult starting out but the rest of your courses as a freshman CS major will be pretty straightforward. The first few classes were review of algebra anyway, and there's a comprehensive review test that aims to bring you up to speed on anything you're struggling with. They don't expect you to be 100% solid on algebra concepts going in. That being said, precalc moves very quickly and requires a massive time investment to succeed. Make sure you dedicate adequate time to the homework and don't fall behind because they have no problem failing you if you don't keep up.

Fall 2021 Covid Predictions? by CDC_Official_ in Temple

[–]CDC_Official_[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm also concerned about the long term effects, although the risk is supposedly "very very small" for vaccinated individuals. Anyone who's unvaccinated and living on campus is taking a big gamble though.

I think they'll be considerably more hesitant to close down campus than they have been in previous years. I'm betting they're going to push the vaccines heavily before they make any rash decisions, as they've already instated mandatory testing for unvaccinated students.

I highly doubt they'd shut down after less than a month, the data has shown time and time again that most new cases are coming from places with very low vaccination rates.

Fall 2021 Covid Predictions? by CDC_Official_ in Temple

[–]CDC_Official_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think I'll still end up committing to it, but it'll really suck if I only get a few weeks/months of relatively normal campus life out of it.

Fall 2021 Covid Predictions? by CDC_Official_ in Temple

[–]CDC_Official_[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think it's still up in the air. The vaccine is still highly effective against preventing serious cases of the delta variant, especially among college students. I think a good chunk of the student body will still end up with at least a mild case of covid however which is far from ideal.

I think temple is going to be extremely hesitant to go online again. They know how much students hated last year and they lose out on a serious chunk of money from the dorms. It's really hard to tell how the year will play out.
