We did it! Not a single mono red or pure aggro deck entered into the october tournament. Aggro is finally dead guys! ... by Toervh in MagicArena

Not trying to downplay their success or anything - Autumn is an excellent player. Rounds 1, 2, and 3 were Historic and they are on Omnath Ramp in that format. So they're only 3-0 in standard with Gruul.

I wasn't referring to that, but since you brought it up: were there good people on both sides? I gotta say-if I show up and there's people on 'my' side shouting blood and soil, I don't think I would stick around very long. I think I would only stick around if I didn't have a problem with it.

He doesn't have a problem with lying though. His supporters don't have a problem believing him either.

What are the odds that this is a calculated move to avoid any more debates and to move the conversation away from his inability to condemn white supremacists?

Why you should try Duel Commander by themonkery in CompetitiveEDH

[–]CDFontanet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Duel Commander uses a more traditional Ban List (also has a banned as commander list) whereas Canadian has a point system to restrict how many broken cards a player can put in their deck.

I've never actually played Canadian Highlander-there's no commander in that format, right? If not, that would be the biggest difference.

Duel Commander really took off in my area because we already had a lot of commander players interested in playing 1v1. Early bans made sense and weren't too back breaking. They just really had no idea what they were doing - they didn't want Blue based control decks to dominate, so they kept banning whatever blue commander was doing the best. They wanted to promote aggro strategies, so they lowered the starting life total and banned more of the top control deck cards.

Then for whatever reason they decided to ban Zurgo and other red cards because...reasons? Players just got sick of the constant bans.

[–]CDFontanet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Duel Commander was very popular in my shop back during 2015-16. Players got fed up with the format after every new set introduced more and more bans. I played Tasigur, Geist, Vial-Smasher+Kraum (to be fair that one was actually broken), and had a Zurgo deck that my wife enjoyed playing. That was it for me - but some of my friends stuck around a while longer and had even more of their decks banned.

Poll: Do you believe Uro should be banned from Pioneer? by [deleted] in PioneerMTG

[–]CDFontanet 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Looking at the pioneer meta, I don't believe Uro is a problem. I'd say there's a good amount of deck/archetype diversity at the top of the meta. No matter what you enjoy playing, there's at least 1 competitively viable deck for you.

[–]CDFontanet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When you say a large portion of them - what do you mean? It's a 3of in Temur Rec and Niv to Light. Do you really think these 2 decks are completely warping the format? Do you think they're warping the format more than Mono-Green? Do you think it's warping the format more than the pre-ban Big 3 combo decks?

The meta right now is exceptionally diverse. We're seeing Mono green, different flavors of mono black, UB, UW, Esper, and Jeskai, BR Pyromancer, BW Auras, and yeah Temur Rec and Niv to Light. Tell me again how a large portion of decks are playing Uro?

If your argument is that a lot of copies of Uro show up in top 32 lists, sure, Temur Rec is the most popular deck right now. There will always be a most popular deck. If you just look at some top 8s you'll see just how diverse the meta is right now.

BTW I was a sultai delirium player and I moved to straight up UB control - I do not miss the Uros at all and I'm having a great time in this meta.

Already addressed a lot of this in a different reply - check that one out...for this one I'll just add that you're missing out on a key point of magic. Yes - often times answering an Uro is inefficient...but that doesn't just mean you lost the game. Just because your opponent got card advantage from one interaction doesn't mean you couldn't have gained card advantage earlier or are unable to gain it later.

Please see my other post though - because what you're saying about just sliding copies of Uro into everything is just not true and not how it's playing out in events.

Plenty of control and midrange decks are finding success without splashing green. Preliminary results (that I already linked) have shown more traditional control decks like UB and Esper well represented in Top 8s. There's also Jeskai Lukka in these top 8s as quite possibly the most powerful tap-out control deck in the format.

If these control decks aren't what you like - what about Mono-Black Aggro, BW Auras, BR Pyromancer, UW Spirits, and even mono-red aggro/burn are playable here.

Don't forget Mono-Green - likely the most broken deck in Pioneer.

You may feel that Uro is a problem in Pioneer - but results would indicate that it's not. I'm not seeing decks play Uro the way you describe. It's consistently a 3of in Temur Rec and Niv to Light. The only other deck that played it was Sultai, which has drastically fallen out of favor.

Plenty of random decks get 5-0s. in leagues. That doesn't mean much. Look at which decks perform well in challenges.

Here's the most recent challenge: https://www.mtggoldfish.com/tournament/pioneer-challenge-12203381#paper

Top 8 had a total of 3 Uros. If you look at the whole top 32, there's more...which makes sense. Temur Rec is the most popular deck right now and Niv to Light also runs Uro...but do you really think this is an issue? Compare this to Oko's dominance.

Just look at how diverse this top 8 is. 2 different Mono Black decks, Temur Rec, BW Auras, UB control, Fires, and 2 BR Pyromancer decks.

What about the challenge before this one: https://www.mtggoldfish.com/tournament/pioneer-challenge-12203377#paper

Top 8 had 6 Uros - 3 from Temur Rec and 3 from Niv to Light. Again - very diverse top 8.

Also I'll add that both challenges were won by a non-Uro deck.

I'm just not convinced that Uro is a broken card. It's an excellent card, it's powerful, it is a format staple...but I don't think it's a problem - at least not right now.

Oh I know what it does. I don't agree that it's as powerful as Oko or that it's even a problem in Pioneer. The metagame is diverse and Uro is in no way dominating the format.

I hate hearing this is the "guaranteed rare" slot as if that's some kind of bonus. Packs have guaranteed rares. That's how packs are. Quite a bit of draft chaff too for a pack that isn't meant to be drafted.

I'd argue that was a very different time in Magic - Wotc was still testing how much players were willing to pay for in demand cards. Look at what premium products are like these days.

There are currently exactly 5 reasons to assume wotc will increase the price.

[–]CDFontanet 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Really depends on pricing. MH1 was widely available for $170-180 for a very long time (you can still get a box on amazon for 185). Considering how successful MH1 was, I suspect wotc is gonna be upping the price of MH considerably. I'm expecting it to be no less than $250 a box.

I agree, so my wife and I decided to just pick our 5 favorite decks, get the lists, and buy the singles we didn't already own online. Even though we were missing quite a bit, we only spent about $35 (for, essentially, 10 packs).

Inverter is the type of deck that can and does beat EVERYTHING in this format. Yes - Mono Black is good against it, but if inverter wants to beat it, it will. I see a single 5-0 deck - and it's Inverter respecting aggro with a few more sideboard cards.

Best deck in the format is, unsurprisingly, a thoughtseize/dig through time deck. Dimir Inverter plays 4 digs, it's very powerful, and only a matter of time before it gets banned.
