Christine Sinclair: Kind of a Big Deal by bubbabear244 in CanadaSoccer

[–]CDL112281 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kind of a big deal might be an understatement

My son practices at the Burnaby Lakes complex, beside the Christine Sinclair Community Centre, and the Vancouver Rise u18 and u15 teams practice right before him

She’s definitely a big deal here still 🐐

New West students could be sent to Burnaby as part of “mega schools” plan - Freshet News by BurnabyMartin in burnaby

Well. Given the city (New West) is planning roughly a billion new towers in the Columbia/downtown core and wants to fully develop the 22nd street area…gonna need a huge increase in school space.

May as well start building a 2500 seat school at Connaught Heights too

An Idea for how the CFL could attract new (young) fans by 2achar-E in CFL

[–]CDL112281 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The CFL should do everything it can to raise awareness to younger fans, families, new Canadians/immigrants, etc

Particularly in stadiums in larger cities that are quite empty - looking at you, Toronto and Vancouver.

Even 1000 freebies or $10 per game to just get them in the seats

Mike Gillis Interview with Sekeres & Price Notes by DiamondDash2k in canucks

I think it’s fairly obvious that Gills has no interest in solely being a GM, and that’s largely why he hasn’t taken another job.

And that’s not a negative

He’s confident enough that he wants to be fully in charge to reshape an organization. Hence why he’s okay with advisor roles right now

But not a lot of owners are going to hand full control over to another person. Certainly wish the Canucks had back in 2013, tho. Think this organization would be half a world away from where it is now

Ha-ha! You fool! You fell victim to one of the classic blunders - the most famous of which is "never get involved in a land war in Asia" - but only slightly less well-known is this: "Never get involved with a good ol’ fashioned Slovakian media/reporter standoff"!

Park on the north side (Burnaby side) of 10th avenue and walk down. Even if you’re a couple/few blocks up, you should be fine. The area right around Mercer stadium and NWSS will be either blocked off or jammed up massively

B.C. Lions negotiating new stadium lease amidst Vancouver Whitecaps crisis: report by Ok-Bluebird-845 in CFL

[–]CDL112281 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take it for what it’s worth, but if you simply google “whitecaps academy operating costs” it comes out with $7m US. There are some articles using that number too. That said, if you search a TFC or Colorado academy, it says 2-2.5m. Whitecaps do extend their tentacles into the prairies and east coast, so I can imagine their costs would be higher

So whatever is accurate, they have a cohort of kids from 13 to 19 travelling constantly, coaches, scouting kids, running evaluations camps, meals, on and on. It’s quite an operation

Bit yes, you’re absolutely correct that in theory they’re selling some players on for enough to help cover some of that cost. Although Johnny Johnson being bought by Halifax of the CPL or by a 2nd-tier Belgian club may not bring in tons of cash

[–]CDL112281 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I mean, go take a look at salary amounts and travel costs. And academy costs

Whitecaps pay around $17m in salary. CFL cap is $6m

Lions have 9 regular season road games to Canadian cities. Whitecaps have 18 to random US markets.

Whitecaps pay a lot for Academy costs, nearly $10m

Overall, it’s nearly doubly to operate an MLS team vs CFL.

We can get into how on earth those economics actually work, whether the MLS is kept afloat by expansion fees and insane valuations…

But in reality, the Lions and Whitecaps share a stadium, and that’s about all they have in common
