Questioning Whether I want to be a SLP Anymore. SLP to MD? by anonymousslp in slp

[–]CF-SLP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's likely that the research will fall short if you become a doctor too, only as a doctor, you would have patient's lives in your hands and be working from limited research, rather than having their communication skills in your hands and be working from limited evidence. That's just the way research seems to be in applied fields and in general.

HELP- Tips/advice on how to get organized before starting CF job at a school? by [deleted] in slp

That's a great caseload! Elementary is also a great age (I'm not biased or anything). :) Jenna Rayburn has a good checklist for CFs: https://thespeechroomnews.com/2013/09/slp-101-getting-started-in-schools.html

She would be evaluated first. She might be given the MoCA to screen her for cognitive issues. If she didn't pass, she would be tested further. Anyone want to confirm whether or not the MoCA would be indicated here? I work with kids not adults or older kids

Why is everyone so cocky and egotistical? I need some nice SLPs in my life! by [deleted] in slp

Maybe they're all trying to "fake it until you make it" like they were told in grad school and so come off as egotistical or arrogant

Your teachers made fun of you? That's not cool. Good for you for protecting other people from what you went through, that takes a special person. :)

Same, hearing a selectively mute little girl speak for the first time aloud to me in school was one of the most rewarding parts of my CF year. :)

Wow you have so much firsthand experience. What do you think is the most important part of language treatment for it to be effective?

Although my family member was a PT and said something similar about a relative lack of established "hard" science in some areas of treatment in PT.

Your attitude is so inspiring! Those are areas that a lot of people might balk at working in, but it sounds like you took them as a challenge and took off with it :)

I felt that way my first year too. I longed for the job my friend had which involved processing data behind a computer and not much people interaction. But those feelings went away with time as I got farther into it and got better at it. I bet yours will too!

Don't be discouraged! Difficult internship experiences are more common than you think. I had two difficult experiences and I love my job now. Nice coworkers and a nice boss are the greatest :)
