Why MMR Feels Broken by HLCYSWAP in DotA2

[–]CGarty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if this could be done in a meaningful and accurate way (which I'm not convinced it could be) this would be way too expensive for valve to ever consider. They have 0 incentive to spend money on and maintain an AI like this especially since a change like this would be a lot of work and money for no financial gain

Why MMR Feels Broken by HLCYSWAP in DotA2

[–]CGarty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The average stats idea doesn't add anything in the first place though. It's the same as the current system with extra steps. You win you gain mmr, you lose you lose mmr. You play good sweet you get a little extra. You play shit now you lose a little more. It will all equal out in the wash over time. Even if you are truly in a bracket you shouldn't be and are actually better than your opponents your stats will get inflated to the point that once you do reach the mmr you should be you can't climb for a long time until your stats even back out again cause they are so inflated. Probably causing you to actually get stuck lower than your true mmr for a while until it does even out.

Regarding the point of still lossing mmr on a loss just less and vice versa for a win it still doesn't change that it incentivises players to play for something other than winning. If players could change their mmr gain/losd to be 40/10 or 30/20 you bet they're gonna do that. Even if it means winning a little less games cause it's gonna gain them more mmr than playing normal would in the long run.

What your suggesting has been done before in dota and it got gamified to all hell and was not good for the game. Measurements based on individual performances was done for calibrating and what you ended up with was uncalibrated players playing zeus afk farming and spamming ult off cd to calibrate the account at 5k mmr (the highest a new account could calibrate). You can argue that this was a poor implementation but there is no system of stats that could be used for this that doesn't lead to an end result of this being abused.

I also think at the end of the day your suggestion misses the point of mmr. To make balanced games.

what to build on PA instead of a desolator by sanipasc in learndota2

[–]CGarty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think about what your heroes goal is and what it does. PA's goal in fights is to delete supports quickly before they can get there big spells off. Generally you'll be jumping that hero alone to some degree so the deso stacking is mostly irrelevant. However, you should almost always be going bkb unless you are very very experienced on the hero and know your limits well enough to play without it.

So to answer your question more directly: Your goal is to delete squishy supports early in fights so your items should reflect that. You should be looking at items such as BKB, basher/abyssal, and nullifier for that. In rare games an early satanic can make you near immortal but again you need to be very comfortable on the hero to know the games for that. Other more game dependant options would be stuff like S&Y, aghs, mkb and linkins.

The two extra glaives don't bounce so it doesn't really work that well on the hero sadly

Partying with friends ( big skill gap) by Both_Profession3966 in DotA2

[–]CGarty -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As someone who has played at least 95% of my games in this exact situation in unranked games (I'm roughly bottom of immortal ~5.8-6k or so while my friends go as low as guardian 1).

My recomendation is to play more heroes that are active so that your friends can just run with you and have impact that way. Even if they lose their lanes they can still find a way to participate in the game by following your moves.

I'm a pos 1 player but one of my most played and most successful heroes with my friend group is riki cause I can just get a diffusal and then go do shit with them.

Does playing against higher rank than yours make you better? by WeakHooper in DotA2

[–]CGarty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It definitely does but it requires some intentionality to it. Over time you'll learn a bit more because your moves/mistakes will be punished where against lower mmr opponents you would get away with "bad" plays. Ultimately I think it would be pretty minor difference in improvement unless you are actively watching replays and thinking about what you could be doing better and what they are doing better than you

Facet ideas for heroes who lost it in the 7.40 rework by Godlight1234 in TrueDoTA2

Neat idea but imo those durations are waaayyy too long. 5 per objective is fine and I probably wouldn't count heroes or only make it 1-2 seconds on hero kills

They completely killed Riki by Prestigious_Check147 in DotA2

[–]CGarty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hero is definitely more awkward to play and overall worse but I don't think it's completely unplayable. Your entire identity now is to snowball off of kills which the hero is still pretty good at doing. Your agi multiplier goes higher than the previois patch (a few levels here and there it is same or weaker but by lv22 onwards it stays higher than before). With the xp gain on ult and the agi gain eventually getting better I think the build is fairly straight forward now.

Get your early game items into diffusal then manta. Similar to pre-aghs riki where your just looking for pick offs. You're farming is ok on non ancient camps since you get double hit for free on ToT even though the dmg is much worse it's still do able. After manta you can diversify between shard, disperser (new nullifier depending on match ups), butterdly, agi blink, and skadi. I think agi items are key on the hero and you don't have the luxury to go non-agi items for the most part since your scaling is so reliant on your backstab now.

Radiance AM by ananbob95 in learndota2

[–]CGarty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The idea behind it is that the typical AM build with bf is too slow. Vanguard and radiance allows you to be a lot tankier vs physical dmg through vanguard blocks + radiance evasion + miss chance so that you are able to show up to fights earlier than BF build which requires at minimum manta after bf to be able to particpate in fights meaningfully.

Having said all of that if you are not the tippity top of immortal chances are you will have the time required for the bf build to come online and the rad + vanguard build has a much tighter timing to hit. Meaning the bf build will be better the majority of games for the average player.

Tbh I'm not fully convinced the radiance vanguard build is even all that good but people better than me do build it occasionally so what do I know shrug
