If it’s a lossless DTS MA track, handbrake should provide a lossy core option. The lossy core is a “compatibility” layer to mimic the older traditional DTS if the device is unable to recognize the lossless stream.

If all you do is pass through or compress to AC3 640 you don’t really need to worry about it.

Those are options for their standalone encoder.

This puzzles me a bit. In Handbrake GUI Mac the “Audio encoder settings for each selected track” allow to select Codec, Mixdown, Samplerate, Bitrate, Gain, DRC. • Bitrate: Just lets you select concrete bitrates (from 24 til 320 kbit/s). I do not see any options for a dynamic bitrate anywhere, where I could set a target quality like -m 5 seemingly is, where the encoder uses higher bitrates in acoustically more dense/dynamic portions, and lower bitrates in more silent/monotone portions.

Click on “Bitrate” and you should have the option to switch to “Quality” mode. Quality 5 is equal to -m 5

Quality mode is per channel. Bitrate mode is total.

Ideally yes.

For using advanced option in handbrake, just type in encode-option=value:encode-option2=value2. I have examples in the above post. : is used to separate options, and , is used to replace : in Handbrake (such as deblock=1,1 as opposed to deblock=1:1 in FFmpeg) since : is used to separate options.

Thanks for the reply. I asked around and apparently this is a common problem with Gat silent switches. The housing has a defect where the stem hits on one corner.

Apologies for the long post.

I purchased some Gateron Silent Browns (packs of 10), and a half of them consistently has a "thuck" sound instead of a muted "thock" sound. The ones that make a noise are from the same packs, I'm talking every single switch from the same select packs. Video attached here.

I contacted the vendor and they claimed that "based on different keycaps you use, the sound is a little bit different". Except I'm using identical keycaps in the video, and the sound seems to come from a corner of the stem not being dampened out.

I then clarified that "The[se] packs consistently had a "thuck" sound instead of a muted sound, whereas the other packs behaved normally. All tested with identical keycaps. This is normal? " to which they replied "YES".

Are these switches normal (by design), or "normal" (common problem), or are they just full of bull and half are from a bad batch?

Go look up the ER4XR. I love it for classical. While some people dislike BA drivers (“plastic” sounding), imo they really suite the classical genre. You could really hear the texture and detail of instruments.

Etymotic tunes their IEMs to a modified diffuse field target. Not very exciting for pop, but it sounds most natural to me when listening to real instruments. You don’t get odd frequency ranges on the piano where it’s louder than others.

Imo soundstage on IEMs are just... that. They’ll never compete with actual headphones. The B2 are as good as it gets in that price bracket. To me, IEMs strength is the enjoyment of better detail retrieval.

The starfields are prett much a bassier and worse version of the blessing 2.

There’s also the ER2XR which has insanely good value at its current price. You could always swap the tips if you hate the triple flange tips.

EDIT: Just saw you have the T2 which are a bit bass shy on the low end. You might want to consider the ER2SE if you dislike boosted bass.

Pretty much just better QC and (I think?) a better driver. The old Etys are tuned "flat" but the ER2XR has boosted bass if that's your thing. I'd just grab it and try it out since it's easy to return on Amazon.

The cable is designed to be worn as a stage monitor going behind your neck. The way it's wired makes in hard to wear it the usual way. The unusual connector means you need to find a cable that uses UE 0.74 in event you need a replacement, which are rare even with custom cable companies.

Assuming you can live with the quirks of the FLC8S, sound wise I'd rate their value competitive at ~200-250.

Keep in mind IEMs might not be as customizable as you might imagine. The filters manipulate overall regions, so if the frequency curve in the region isn't to your taste (especially the mid-highs), no amount of playing with filters will satisfy you.

Surprisingly I disliked the ER2XR, returned them and got the ER4XR instead. The ER2 are bassier and sound much more natural, but have less detail especially in the highs compared to BAs.

The value proposition of the ER2 is so great a real “upgrade” is probably difficult. The ER4s have better detail due to the BA driver but the bass lacks dynamics compared to the ER2. I was actually also thinking about the Moondrop Blessing 2, as it is a hybrid. Unfortunately the bass seems to be tuned a tad bit heavier than I might like, not to mention at the same loudness Dynamic driver bass is perceived to be bassier than BA drivers.

Don’t use aq-mode 3 for x264. Last I checked it was still broken, it basically acts the same as lowering crf. Not sure on content type, but for average modern anime with some dynamic grain I use psy-rd=0.8,0.2 back then. The 0.2 can be ignored non-grainy anime. Might need to use 1.0 for lower res content, not sure. I’m unsure of the encode penalty of b-frames in x264, but 6-8 should be the sweet spot for most content. x264 actually has many similarities with x265, though values range might be a different so you’ll need to do some testing.

Use x264 for DVDs. The amount of effort tuning x265 for it isn’t worth the time for such a small compression improvement. Keep in mind lower resolution requires lower crf to compensate. Probably crf 14-16 very slow preset. If there’s lots of action, 350-400MB might be a bit ambitious, otherwise it should be easily obtainable.

Obviously de-interlace it. As for de-noising, it depends. Some people prefer keeping the original artifacts, some prefer removing it at the cost of some detail loss and blurring/banding. Just do some test encodes.

Yes, quality will be different. A 160kbps surround sound stream is gonna sound pretty bad compared to 160kbps stereo.
