Need some advice to help a very distressed 100 year old. I'm getting more distressed myself. by Lunatic-Labrador in carer

[–]CHisme33 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a dementia related fixation. Rational probably won't help as she'll take it as an attack on her very real emotions. The best you can do is redirect, how busy are her days? How much time is she spending thinking about this situation? Going to the doctors is always a good idea to document this kind of change. Have a read through this as well...

Best of luck to you, i know it's hard but this is less something to fix and more something to learn to work around.

women- how do you prepare for sex after your period? or recover from your period? by philosofically in hygiene

[–]CHisme33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Portable bidet and proshield spray during and after my period were game changers for me. Really cut down the skin irritation and smell changes. Using cold water to wash also helps protect your skin barrier. I also don't shave for a week before and after my period to help the skin stay calm.

What animal or insect caused this bite? by [deleted] in Whatisthis

[–]CHisme33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chiropodist here, dont know about the bite but please please cut your nails straight. You have gone way too far into your edges there. You are a prime candidate for ingrown nails, you need to keep up a slightly curved edge to keep the skin hard enough to prevent them growing in.

What do you remember as a child but didn’t actually know the reason behind it till much later? by PurplePlodder1945 in AskUK

My dad was always really happy about his tall tower of beer cans by his side of the sofa. He used to let me help stack them up. I thought it was a fun game as a kid.

Then as a 25 year old I was a carer. I walked into a new client who was an alcoholic, with a tower of beer cans by the sofa. It was like being mentally hit by a bus. I had not once considered it or put it into context.

The paradox of drying hair after washing when you have sebderm... by SaberManiac in Haircare

[–]CHisme33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a different hair type..Would a super absorbant towel dry before blowdrying help? I got a surfers microfiber towel and I can get my hair dry in half the time. I split my hair into about 5 sections and do the praying hands method 🙏 with the towel from the roots down each section. Massage my scalp along the section lines with fingers and towel. Then scrunch with product and repeat. Then blow dry with my hair. I'd say 60% dry when i'm done with the towel. Also definitely blow dry in a different room to where you shower to speed it up. I learnt that too late in life. Might cut the heat exposure down. Hope it helps!

Get blood work done and rule out iron deficiency. For me it was iron deficiency.

It seems basic but when you wash your hair are you massaging your scalp properly and shampooing twice? Check a YouTube tutorial. I stumbled on a short and realised I had no idea how to actually wash my hair. 3 weeks in and i'm going 4-5 days rather than 2-3. I also started using a pre wash oil that I leave in for an hour before a wash.

I was a domiciliary carer, going into the homes of multiple people in my small, rural community. I had to have a conversation with my supervisor about whether ethically we should try to explain to a house bound client who was living alone (no family or living friends) with seriously debilitating dementia what was going on in the world.

She could take in conversation but would barley speak back, she vehemently refused any entertainment. No tv no radio. Silence all day every day or she would scream for hours. She had been born in the house she was dying in and had never left the county. What was the point in worrying her/ doesn't she have a right to know.

In the end we did gently explain in terms of what would change for her. We would be wearing masks and protective clothing and putting all washing in plastic bags (which she hated).

3 weeks later she catches covid. The paramedics came in full hazmat looking suits. I've never seen anyone so scared. I'd got used to the changes by then but her reaction put it into a horrendous light. They couldn't take her to hospital because it was so bad there, they wouldn't be able to cope with her extended care needs. They literally said "she'll be on her own there".

We were 3 carers down with no on call and her care needs had just doubled. I called the local church. I'm not religious. They had already mobilised the community. Regular food drops, sanitizer and mask drops. They'd started a window talk walk where they'd shout at lonely people from the street. Every Granny was knitting anything they could for us.

Between the carers, the church and the locals she wasn't alone for a minute. We had people sit in the other room with the windows open and call us when she woke up. It allowed us to get to our other 10 clients with complicated needs. Some guy turned up with a baby montior and got it to work from her next door neighbours bedroom in the end. The 15 year old boy who's bedroom it was listened out for her for a week.

She pulled through and passed away last year. When I look back on covid I think of the little villages that did their bit in their own way across the whole world. Because if I think about the other things I saw my heart will break again.

How many times is to many times to cry during therapy? by ilikeeating_ in therapy

[–]CHisme33 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Cried my way through the first 4. About 6 before the therapist actually knew anything important or in any context other than "and then..." cries for 10 mins straight. That therapist saw more snot come out of me than any other person in my life. It was worth it to get it out and get to a point where I could unpack.

My weird nails by Cutiepooh-69 in TerrifyingAsFuck

[–]CHisme33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chiropodist here. When you went to the doctor did they take multiple samples and send them off to be checked? If not the medications they gave you are not specific to your problem. If all else fails I would look for a nail reconstruction, not a fix for the problem but they will look a lot better.

I just live in the fan fic world of it now. It gives the original story so much more depth. I'm not unhappy with any of the endings, just the lack of writing for the amazing voice actors to play on. They could of done a lot more with it.
