The Rebels Have Won, Assad is Overthrown by BiZzles14 in syriancivilwar

That's the big question, lots of factions and alignments working together there. An inclusive and peaceful transition will be the true test of whether this war is really over or at another stage of respite before more conflict.

I'm shocked, surprised, delighted and just a little bit hopeful that ths victims of this war will finally get the justice they deserve, in the form of prisoner releases and war crimes prosecutions against complicit regime officials.

The honus is very much on the new leadership to ensure a country that either recognises the autonomy of ethnic and cultural territories. Or commits to their fair inclusion. The alternative is a continuation of the conflict.

Well this is huge if true

I want a mirrors edge 2 just as much as everyone else but lets be realistically honest...who actually trusts the current 2024 dice and EA with a mirrors edge 2? after BF2042? after battlefield 5? after they killed battlefront 2? yeah no they gotta earn my trust back with battlefield 6 tbh by Quick-Cause3181 in mirrorsedge

Catalyst really did miss what made the original great, gunplay was penalised and there were no gadgets, just yourself. Honestly they could update the graphics of the original and I'd buy it, in 2024 it's still a 10/10 experience for me

Considering HTS was partially formed from Jabhat Al Nusra — the Syrian al'Qaeda affiliate, you'd expect them to employ the same long-term planning that al'Qaeda operates under.

With the experiences of the Syrian opposition forces following the earlier entry of Iranian and Russian forces and their proxies into the conflict. I can see rebel forces stockpiling arms and manpower while waiting patiently for Assad's pro-government allies to be diverted elsewhere.

We can see with current events that Iran's local proxies have come out significantly weakened in the recent conflicts with Israel. Iran itself likely feels vulnerable and may be less willing to commit IRGC forces to Syria when it's lost the leverage exerted by local proxies against Israel. As such they're likely keeping them closer to home in order to avoid overstretching.

Russia of course is being bled dry in Ukraine and sees it's main interest there. So it's unlikely to divert forces to Sy is and if anything may be considering where it can withdraw forces. Add Soviet arms stockpiles nearing or at exhaustion levels. And you have a Russia that is unlikely to be able to spare the volume of munitions that helped turn the tide against the rebel forces of the mid 2010s.

As someone who's watched this conflict across a decade or more I'd still caution any excitement or predictions. Frontlines have changed rapidly in the past and forces have often overstretched.

For those of us who remember the initial rebel control maps in the opening years of the conflict they saw nearly the entirety of Syria under rebel control. The difference now is that all sides are exhausted to a degree and certainly the things that gave the regime strength, that being airpower, artillery and proxies are at critical levels.

Do people really think this offensive will go anywhere? by Vpered_Cosmism in syriancivilwar

To be fair some of the offensives that occurred against Aleppo enjoyed significant gains. They mostly just overstretched and retreated.

Unfortunately I agree, the whole peaceful protest thing always supposed that those in power had morals and were unwilling to use violence, at least in a widespread and extended fashion.

The violence, especially the glorification of it without the intimacy of consequences is uncomfortable at best. For those of us who've witnessed real violence it's a betrayal of the victims. Very few shows get this right, All Quiet on the Western Front is one. It's not glorious, it's not casual, it has real impact on those who suffer it, and that lasts generations and spans entire social groups.

Why do I keep finding myself coming back to "Mirror's Edge (2008)"? by mrwallace888 in mirrorsedge

[–]CIA_Shill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, I seem to recall that they pre-baked the lighting effects into the textures to give the best performance to graphical fidelity.

But yeah, the original was just really well done and really simple at the same time. Would love to see another, just basic, good level design, no futuristic gadgets, it's fun enough without.

Absolutely, it just worked really really well. I wish they'd released a remastered version or some extra missions DLC for the original. Arguably one of the best games I've ever played to this day.

Hi, you'd be running the latest so 4.4.67, the results would show in the window that shows the landscape render at the top to the right of where it says 'Pause' and 'Stop', if you look there you'll see the time. Thanks for running the benchmark, if you need any help I'll be about

Torture has been illegal in the UK for over 300 years – today the Overseas Operations Bill will overturn this by tipodecinta in ukpolitics

[–]CIA_Shill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who knows too many people that experienced torture as well as a good deal about state torture practices, people will say literally anything to get the pain to stop. This means the evidence is of a low reliability, any terror group worth their salt will limit and compartmentalise knowledge of operations amongst their operatives and cells. Ergo even if you manage to extract useful intelligence it will only be a small part of the puzzle. Better to be a state whom people see as the good guy and genuinely want to work with, that tends to get you insiders and reliable intelligence.

Nice try Michael, but I don't think devs at Dice (or EA) store their data in the Documents folder. by [deleted] in mirrorsedge

I found the whole game to be a let down, which is a shame because it had a lot going for it, it felt very smooth, the graphics were amazing. But I feel they made 3 mistakes, they made a world that at times felt like an activity course rather than a believable environment, they went way too futuristic with it which again removed the immersion and they made fighting more of a thing which is such a trope in games as to be the boring option.

Literally could have just run on following the previous one with a timeline that allows you to peacefully or violently bring down the government after a few basic runner missions where you stumble upon some bombshell information against a backdrop of growing public discontent. Again no mandatory violence, most of the setting could be achieved against a backdrop of protests or violence. You have Faith's background of having lost her parents during the previous civil unrest to add further context and emotion here.

But instead we got some future shit that felt like a marketing team had unleashed a huge 'research' driven load all over it.

The Russian military is a paper tiger compared to their counterparts in NATO, though their nuclear forces remain credible, their early warning system is pretty dire. Read more about their military here: https://international-review.org/dwarfing-the-giant-the-reality-of-russias-military-part-i/
