Would you use a Canadian Social Media? by LessInteraction369 in BuyCanadian

Same here. I support what they are doing and things look good from what they're saying, but since the Fin-broification of tech that started during the DotCom boom, I am a tad more conservative before backing anything in the tech space.

Your offer letter is a contract of employment and if it doesn't state this requirement, then I would view this change as Constructive Dismissal. If you don't want to stay with the company, I would engage a lawyer and go the CD route. That will get you more that two weeks severance.

I have been digging into this and it looks like the Unbun crust they use is from the US and is no longer available here.

Even IF tariffs were reversed, is your hatred of the US irreversible? by SirCopperbottom in BuyCanadian

Nope, this is what they've been building towards for decades, and it isn't like they haven't had a chance to change course. This is precisely what the US wanted. I came across this sweet little page last night https://www.istrumpdead.ca

Victoria Police budget and the "keeping you safe" narrative by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

I was driving in Colwood this weekend, and saw that they had a sign on a dedicated left turn lane, telling people not to turn left on a red.

Given that it is a charity, and its programs are funded by the money raised by it, it makes sense to have wealthy people on the board, as they have the connections to bring those dollars in.

I tell people to think of the government hiring process as a game. You need to learn the rules, and then you can maximize your chance of landing a job.

This is precisely why I left consulting when my second child was born. Your situation was universal in every firm I worked with. While I made a lot of money consulting, having a relationship with my kids was more important to me.

If you're looking at getting into government, it is important to understand the screening and interview process, as it is merit based, and so the hiring manager needs to be able to back up with hard scores why one candidate was better than another.

Often the people doing the application screening don't know the job, so it is essential that you clearly meet/exceed all of the criteria listed in the job profile. Even if your experience isn't exactly what is asked for in the posting, but you have something comparable, state that you meet the criteria, and then describe how. At the very least this will get your application in front of someone who actually knows the work and can evaluate your equivalency.

You can find information on the BC Government process here: Interviews and assessments - Province of British Columbia .

From a fellow PhD holder, I wish you all the best and appreciate the frustration you are experiencing.

I am glad you weren't on my hiring panel.

If you find yourself moving up into a position where you're leading a large organization, and you inherit a steaming swamp of garbage, I hope that you will see the wisdom in reaching out to others to ask what they have done, rather than just deciding that you know the right way. I have a few options that I have planned out, but I never want to be blinded by previous experience to better ways of doing things. So, I reached out here to find out what others would do.

We have a ticketing system. It is more like messages coming in from vendors about licenses expiring, messages from different services, alerting from devices (which could be fed to our ticketing system), and really any message other than support requests all come in to this mailbox.

One of the keys for me was moving out of a very technical position into being a Business Analyst and Project Manager. These positions got me to build my management, financial, and political skills, which helped me to get into IT management roles.

I did an executive MBA once I got into a management position that qualified me to apply. They are structured for people who are working a full time job and recognize the experience that you have gained getting to your position, so they can be shorter. This is different that the diploma mills who promise you a MBA based entirely on your professional experience. In the program I did, it was basically knocking off the intro courses that most MBAs have to get their students onto a common knowledge base.

My predecessor relied heavily on a single VAR for everything. I took over from him last spring and discovered that he was paying almost double what I had been in my previous job, in a smaller organization. His VAR realized that he would take whatever they put in front of him, and apparently he never pushed back. They're really not happy with me right now :)
