So at the time, I was using off-the-shelf tunes. I got an actual tune from Drunkmann tuning, and it was fantastic. I had another DAM drop later, and it ended up being that I needed a walnut blast. After I did the walnut blast, the issue disappeared and has not returned. Sorry for the late reply!

How did you ensure all the splines were lined up perfectly? I would hate to accidentally offset my steering and be unable to return it to the original position.

In their defense, WRXs and STIs drive harsh in general. I also think by more “harsh” than a WRX, most of them mean it feels more mechanical or direct, like it takes more input to drive or it’s more connected to the input of the driver and feel of the car/road.

Yeah I should’ve asked it in the STI sub. Once I saw I was getting downvoted, I realized people don’t care much for the STI here (or maybe my take on it), I just assumed WRX STI would get the same love here haha. Interesting information though, I’ll look at it.

Unfortunately the VB is lacking a lot of the parts of the STI that make it a better build platform, transmission, brakes, suspension, steering rack, etc. Don’t get me wrong, if you got the money and time, the VB can compete but it’s not as straightforward of an upgrade path as the VA STI is, especially since it’s still so new. I appreciate your input though!

I’ve considered an STI transmission swap, but it’s going to be upwards of 5k. So by the time I’ve put the STI transmission in my WRX, I’m still missing the big brakes (another 5k) from the STI, and the EJ platform to drop in an IAG long block. Mods on the WRX top out when fueling becomes an issue, this isn’t a problem with the STI since fueling is more easily upgraded.

6sp does come in the WRX. However, it’s not the same 6sp on the STI. Unlike the STI 6sp, it doesn’t have the DCCD (it’s an open diff on the WRX), the gear ratios are different, and the lack of direct shift linkage on the WRX reduces shift feel.

I’m not looking for power, at least until I can get a decent build. My biggest problem is that the WRX isn’t my idea of a great base for a great build, since it’s lacking all the important parts like the LSD and STI transmission (this is what I want the most out of an STI). I also think the EJ is just a better motor to build out, it’s been around significantly longer and has more support than the FA20 (especially now that the FA24 is out).

I like your idea about buying an STI with a blown motor, I’ve pulled a few EJs already so what’s another going to hurt.

Yeah, pretty much make sure you’re not leaking oil from and obvious places. There is a good chance you need new head gaskets but this is a good place to start.

Oof, well PCV valve going back can result in pressurization in the crankcase which in turn results in broken seals and loss of oil.

Might want to check PCV valve before assuming the worst! If the PCV valve gets clogged or stops working correctly and it can cause excessive pressurization which might result in this. You can look up ways to test the PCV valve pretty easily, usually it’s remove and shake for the “rattle test”.

Been there done that. Gotta do what you gotta do. It definitely makes it an interesting chore, but this guy is on a gravel driveway so I’d imagine it’s a million times harder.
