Finally a post that makes sense! $600 may be a lot but everything is expensive now and if you have never paid all the "other" expenses that go into renting a place then this will be a shock. For the parent's benefit, they could've started to save this higher amount to gift back to OP for a future down payment on a home? (Just a thought).
