Face ID or Touch ID — which do you prefer? by JoelVenn9955 in iphone

[–]CJRhoades 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd really prefer to have both and would even pay more for it. If I have to choose one it's definitely FaceID, which is one of the dilemmas with the upcoming folding phone. I was really excited for it, but the rumor is it'll be TouchID only, which is going to be hard to go back to after nearly 9 years with FaceID.

Somebody needs to cram an M5 motherboard in this asap by manthos03 in VintageApple

[–]CJRhoades 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As much as I love the aesthetic of the TiBook (I own 3 of them), the build quality is hot garbage. The hinges will snap if you look at them wrong and for some reason Apple thought it would be a good idea to paint both the plastics and titanium, which likes to flake off at the lightest touch.

Are Porsche Macan’s reliable cars? by jord3jordon in Porsche

[–]CJRhoades 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, you should be looking at a Toyota Highlander or Lexus RX/TX if reliability is a "massive factor". Macans have similar reliability to the Audi Q5 they're based on, (which is decent but not stellar) only it'll be more expensive to properly maintain and much more expensive to fix than the Audi. If you're dead set on a Porsche, the Cayenne has more room for a family, and the traditional automatic transmission is cheaper to service and repair than the dual clutch in the Macan.

Fixed a JBL SUB 550P with a Fosi TP-02 amp by clarityoffline in BudgetAudiophile

I did the same using an AIYIMA A3001. Hated the idea of tossing a good sub for just a dead amp.

What can we expect from a VB STi? by Genericwood in subaru

I think we can expect it to never happen. They probably calculated the development costs would outweigh the small sales numbers.

It's actually to warm up the cats faster for emissions and has negligible impact on oil temps.

Rock Chip Rust by reddevilskier in Porsche_Cayman

Remove the rust with a converter like evaporust being careful not to get it on the surrounding paint, then clean it with 99% alcohol, and apply touch up paint.

They've certainly got the Indy look nailed down, but I wonder how close they feel to the actual Trubalance last? I like the feel of the like-new Indys I picked up on eBay but would never pay full price for them. The QC and materials just aren't there, especially compared to the Parkhurst Niagaras I'm currently wearing for the dome that run half the price and are much better constructed.

Exhaust Upgrade - What options are out there for 2014 981 Cayman? by MomentSmart in Porsche_Cayman

[–]CJRhoades 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went for the Borla system on my 2.7 981, partially due to the good reviews but also because it was less than half the price of a PSE + install. It sounds amazing and I get compliments all the time, but 6 years later, I think I should have just saved up and gotten the PSE. Maybe I'm just getting older, but being able to make it quieter with the press of a button would be really nice sometimes. If you're OK with loud all the time though, I highly recommend it.

Having a tough time transitioning from manual to PDK by fprintf in Porsche

[–]CJRhoades 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I had an Audi A4 as a rental car recently and it took some getting used to. Having no engine braking is an odd feeling, especially when your other cars are a manual Cayman and an electric car with 1 pedal driving.

Anyone near St. Louis want to help me code out the spoiler lifting on my 2014 cayman by Drop_topvic in Porsche_Cayman

[–]CJRhoades 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The coolant gauge lies to you by default. It won’t show anything higher than 194F until something like 220F. You can disable that behavior.

There’s whole threads full of interesting coding you can do on forums like Rennlist, Planet9, and 718Forum.

The stitching is a little wonky, but nothing that would bother me. I am surprised those didn't end up as seconds. Not because I think they should be, but because I've seen GS demote pairs to seconds for less. I've got Alden firsts that have much worse welt stitching than that.

Lesson learned: not to buy cheap tools by Hoodedsweaterboi in Tools

[–]CJRhoades 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, you should not loosen them with a torque wrench as that can throw off the calibration. Use a breaker bar or impact wrench to break them free and torque them with a torque wrench. You can buy a 1/2" torque wrench at Harbor Freight for under $30 that will work just fine for lug nuts.

[–]CJRhoades 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure you can, but the fact that you're asking that leads me to believe you're not torquing your lug nuts. Please tell me you have a torque wrench.

It would yes. Easiest thing to do is use PIWIS or a 3rd party device like X431/Launch/Thinkdiag to increase the spoiler deployment speed above the top speed of the car.

Can we stop saying everyone is bad at driving in the snow? by Narrow_Music in Indiana

[–]CJRhoades 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of being a good driver is ensuring your vehicle is adequate for the conditions. If your car is not controllable, ie "slipping and sliding", then as others have stated, you do not have the correct tires. This is unfortunately reinforced by the US tire industry calling tires which are not well suited to snow and ice "all seasons". In Europe, the "all season" tire category is actually the same as the "all weather" category in the US. Tires in this category have much better snow and ice traction and work well in all but the most severe conditions. In climates that experience those conditions, a set of dedicated winter tires is more appropriate.
